Auto Detailer Job Description: Duties, Responsibilities, Template & Pay (2026)
An auto detailer returns a vehicle to a condition the customer will pay for — wash, decontaminate, polish, protect, and put the interior right. It is skilled work that is advertised as unskilled, which is most of why the role is hard to fill. This page has an auto detailer job description template you can copy, what the work pays, and the three things that separate a posting that fills from one that does not.
What an auto detailer does
O*NET describes cleaners of vehicles and equipment as scrubbing, scraping and spraying vehicles and parts using scrapers, brushes, cloths, cleaners, disinfectants, acids, abrasives, vacuums and hoses, and applying paints, dyes, polishes, reconditioners, waxes and masking materials to preserve, protect or restore condition.
In a detail shop that breaks into four levels of work, and the posting should say which one it is hiring for.
Wash and prep. Two-bucket or touchless wash, wheels and tyres, door jambs, drying without inducing swirls, and the vacuum and wipe-down that most customers call a detail.
Decontamination. Iron remover, clay bar or clay mitt, tar and overspray removal — the stage that makes the difference between a clean car and a car that is ready for paint correction.
Correction and protection. Machine polishing, compound and finish stages, paint-depth awareness, and applying sealant, wax or ceramic coating. This is the part with real skill and real risk: a rotary in the wrong hands burns through paint on a panel edge in seconds.
Interior. Extraction, steam, leather cleaning and conditioning, headliner work, odour treatment, and the pet-hair and spill jobs nobody photographs.

Requirements: what is required, what is preferred, and what costs you applicants
The mistake most detail shops make is advertising for a car washer and expecting a detailer. The two are different jobs at different rates, and the posting decides which one applies.
| Requirement | What to know |
|---|---|
| Experience | Split it by level. Wash and interior work is learnable in a fortnight; machine polishing is not, and putting a novice on a rotary is how a shop pays for a respray. Say which level you are hiring for and whether you will train through to the next one. |
| Driver's licence and record | A genuine requirement, because the job involves moving customers' vehicles, and worth stating plainly along with what disqualifies. Candidates self-screen out over speculation. |
| Physical requirements | Concrete and honest: standing, bending, kneeling, reaching into footwells, lifting, chemicals, noise, and whether the bay is heated or the work is outdoors in February. |
| Certification | Ceramic coating manufacturer certifications are real, portable and valued. Offering to pay for one is among the strongest lines available to a detail shop and it costs little. |
| Pay structure | Hourly, per-vehicle and commission all exist in this trade and they suit different people. Say which you use, and if it is per-vehicle, say a realistic weekly total rather than only the rate — otherwise candidates assume the worst. |
| Attention to detail | Everyone writes it. Replace it with the actual standard: "every car is inspected under LED lighting before release and goes back if it has holograms" tells a real detailer more than the phrase ever will. |
Auto detailer duties, written for a posting
Describe the shop and the work mix. Vehicles a week, the split between wash-and-interior and correction work, how many detailers, whether the bays are indoors and heated, what polishers and extractors you run, and whether you do ceramic. Those facts tell an experienced detailer whether the job is a car wash with a better title or the work they actually want.
Say what the quality standard is and who checks it. A shop with a final inspection under proper lighting is a different employer from one that releases whatever comes out of the bay, and the detailers worth hiring are choosing on exactly that.
Keep the list to eight or nine lines, ordered by how much of the week each takes, and include the intake damage check — it protects the shop and it signals that the role carries responsibility.
How to customize it by shop
Dealership reconditioning
Volume, turnaround times and a used-car manager waiting on units. Say the vehicles per day and the standard, and be honest that the work is production rather than craft — the people who want this job want steady hours and a predictable week, and that is a real offer.
Independent detail shop
Fewer vehicles, higher standard, more correction and coating work. Lead with the equipment, the chemicals and the training path. This is the segment where a detailer will move for the work itself.
Mobile detailing
Say what the van carries, whether there is a water tank and generator, the driving radius, and how the day is routed. Mobile work suits people who want autonomy; it loses the ones who expected a bay when it rains.
Ceramic coating and paint correction
A specialist market. Name the coatings you are certified for, the correction process, the lighting, and whether you measure paint depth. Detailers who do this work screen hard for shops that take it seriously.
Fleet and commercial
Trucks, vans and equipment rather than customer cars, usually on a schedule and often overnight. Say the fleet size, the cadence and the shift. The pitch is predictability.
Car wash with detail services
Be straight about the ratio. If the job is 80% tunnel and 20% detail, saying so gets you somebody who will stay; calling it a detailer role gets you somebody who leaves in month two.
What it costs to reach auto detailers on social
Hourly customer-facing roles are the cheapest audience in our 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark: across 181 retail and corporate campaigns the median cost per applicant was $8.58, with a volume-blended figure of $3.66 and a 26% apply rate — the highest of any sector. Across all 891 managed campaigns the median was $13.88 and the cheapest decile $2.91.
At those numbers the media cost is almost never what stops the role being filled. Across the benchmark, campaigns converting over 20% of clicks paid a median $4.41 an applicant and those under 10% paid $53.77 — a twelvefold difference driven by the posting and the application form, not the auction. Three questions on the form and a same-day callback is the whole optimisation. Detailing has one useful quirk: a short video of a finished car outperforms any stock image in this trade, because the audience judges shops on results.

Writing the ad version
The description is the document. The advertisement is read on a phone by somebody who has other options at a similar rate. It needs the pay and how it is structured, whether the bays are indoors, what you supply, and whether you train through to machine work — in the first three lines. Our campaign data puts the best-converting length at 201–400 words, and for a role like this the shorter end works.
Three or four questions on the form, then call the same day. Every extra field costs completions, and the detailer you want has applied somewhere else this morning.
What auto detailers earn
Cleaners of vehicles and equipment — the occupation detailers are counted in — had a median of $17.23 an hour, $35,830 a year in 2025, across about 410,100 people with roughly 56,200 openings a year and 3–4% projected growth.
Read that as the floor rather than the going rate for skilled detailing. The classification includes car wash attendants and equipment cleaners alongside detailers doing paint correction and ceramic work, and the top of the trade earns well above it — particularly where pay is per-vehicle or commission and the shop is busy.
| Comparison role | Median pay (2025) |
|---|---|
| Automotive service technicians and mechanics | $24.34/hr · $50,620 |
| Tire repairers and changers | $18.13/hr · $37,710 |
| Cleaners of vehicles and equipment (detailers) | $17.23/hr · $35,830 |
That table is worth keeping in view when you write the posting, because the same candidate is often choosing between all three. A detail shop cannot usually beat a service department on rate, but it can beat it on entry — no tools to buy, no certification required to start — and on a training path that leads to coating work. Say both.
Frequently asked questions
What does an auto detailer do?
An auto detailer washes, decontaminates, polishes and protects a vehicle's exterior and cleans and conditions its interior. That means wheels, tyres and jambs, clay and iron removal, machine polishing to correct defects, applying wax, sealant or ceramic coating, vacuuming, extraction, steam and leather care, and a final inspection under proper lighting before the vehicle is released.
How much do auto detailers make?
Cleaners of vehicles and equipment, the occupation detailers are counted in, had a median of $17.23 an hour or $35,830 a year in 2025. That classification includes car wash attendants, so skilled detailers doing correction and coating work commonly earn above it — particularly on per-vehicle or commission pay in a busy shop.
What qualifications does an auto detailer need?
No formal credential — O*NET reports 54% of entrants with a high school diploma or equivalent and 24% with less. What the job needs is care, consistency and a valid driver's licence with a record clean enough to move customers' vehicles. Machine polishing is the skill that takes real training, and ceramic coating manufacturer certifications are valued and usually paid for by the employer.
What is the difference between a car wash attendant and an auto detailer?
A car wash attendant cleans the vehicle's surface at speed. A detailer decontaminates, corrects paint with a machine polisher, applies protection and restores the interior to a standard. They are different skill levels at different rates, and advertising one while expecting the other is the most common reason detail roles fill badly.
What should an auto detailer job description include?
The shop type, vehicles per week, the split between wash-and-interior and correction or coating work, team size, whether the bays are indoors and heated, the equipment and chemicals you supply, the pay structure stated plainly, the training path to machine work, the driving requirement, and the physical demands.
Do auto detailers need their own equipment?
In many shops they are expected to bring chemicals and sometimes a polisher, which is effectively a pay cut. A shop that supplies everything should say so prominently — it is unusual enough in this trade to be a genuine differentiator, and it removes a real barrier for candidates entering the work.
Is detailing a skilled trade?
The correction and coating end of it is. Machine polishing requires understanding pads, compounds, paint depth and panel edges, and mistakes are expensive — burning through clear coat on an edge takes seconds. Wash and interior work is learnable in a fortnight. Most shops need both, which is why the posting should say which level it is hiring for.
Why is it hard to hire auto detailers?
Because the role competes with service departments, tyre shops, warehouses and retail at a similar entry rate while being physically demanding and often advertised as unskilled. The shops that fill reliably supply the equipment, state the pay structure honestly including realistic weekly earnings on per-vehicle pay, and advertise a training path from wash through interior to machine work.
