How to Recruit Auto Detailers: Hiring a Detailer, Not Just a Car Washer

To recruit auto detailers, say which level of work you are hiring for (wash and interior, or machine polishing and coatings), because they are different candidates at different rates. Recruit from car washes, dealership lots, mobile detailers and people who detail their own cars. Lead the ad with pay and how it is structured, whether you supply the chemicals and machines, and whether you train through to paint correction. Ask three questions, then invite them for a paid trial.

Who you are recruiting

BLS does not count auto detailers on their own. They sit inside cleaners of vehicles and equipment (SOC 53-7061), alongside car wash attendants and equipment cleaners; "auto detailer" and "automobile detailer" are among the job titles BLS files there. That occupation had 419,500 workers in 2025, projected to reach 435,800 by 2035 (growth of 3.9 percent), with about 51,500 openings a year. The May 2025 median annual wage was $35,830. BLS lists no formal educational credential and short-term on-the-job training as typical.

Because the occupation is so broad, those figures describe the wash end of the trade better than the correction and coating end. Inside a detail shop you are usually hiring one of two people:

  • Wash and interior detailers. Washing, drying, wheels, vacuum, extraction, glass. Learnable quickly; the job is consistency.
  • Correction and coating detailers. Decontamination, machine polishing, sealants and ceramic coatings. Real skill, real risk to a customer's paint, and much harder to find.

Where to find auto detailers

  • Car washes. Attendants who want better pay and more skilled work. Say you will train them onto a machine.
  • Dealership reconditioning and lot staff. Porters and lot attendants who already move and clean vehicles. See our guide to auto dealership recruiting.
  • Mobile and side-business detailers. Many detailers run their own weekend jobs. Steady pay, supplied equipment and indoor bays are a real pitch to them.
  • Car enthusiasts. People who polish their own cars and post the results. They already care about the finish.
  • Adjacent shop roles. Body shop prep helpers and tire technicians who want a change; see the auto body technician role for the next rung.
  • Referrals. Your best detailer knows the next one.
  • Social ads. A short video of a finished car in a Facebook or Instagram ad reaches detailers who are working somewhere else today. Employment ads run in Meta's Special Ad Category, so location targeting needs at least a 15-mile radius and there is no age or gender targeting.

What to pay auto detailers

The BLS median for cleaners of vehicles and equipment was $35,830 a year in May 2025. Treat it as the floor for wash work, not the going rate for a detailer who can correct paint. Detail shops pay hourly, per vehicle or by commission. If you pay per vehicle, state a typical weekly total as well as the rate, or candidates assume the worst. The auto detailer job description has the wage section and a template you can copy.

How to write the auto detailer job ad

Detailers check four things before they apply:

  • Pay and structure. Hourly, per car or commission, and what a normal week pays.
  • What you supply. Chemicals, polishers, pads, extractors, uniforms. Many detailers own their kit because shops expect it; saying "you bring nothing" stands out.
  • The work mix. Cars per week, and the share that is wash and interior versus correction and coating.
  • Where they work. Heated indoor bays, a mobile van, or an outdoor lot in February.

Sample headlines: "Auto Detailer, [pay range], indoor heated bays, we supply everything." "Car wash experience? Learn paint correction and earn more." "Mobile Detailer, company van and equipment, weekly pay."

Screening questions for auto detailers

  • What detailing have you done? (Wash and interior / Machine polishing / Ceramic coatings / None yet, want to learn)
  • Do you have a valid driver's license? (Yes / No), because detailers move customers' cars
  • Can you work [days and hours, including Saturdays]? (Yes / No)

Skip the rest. A paid working interview on one real car shows you more than any form question.

Speed and follow-up

Hourly applicants apply to several shops at once and take the first one that calls. Text within minutes and invite them in the same week. Boostpoint Connect sends a text the moment someone applies and puts every reply in a shared inbox, so nobody waits for a call back.

Keeping detailers past the first 90 days

Detailers leave when the job turns out to be something other than the ad described: a tunnel wash sold as a detail shop, or a promise of machine work that never comes. Put the training path in writing on day one, with the point at which a new hire is cleared for polishing and the pay step that goes with it. Check in at 30, 60 and 90 days. A detailer who can see the next rate is far less likely to answer another shop's ad.

What it costs to recruit auto detailers on social

Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark has no role family for auto detailers, so we will not quote one as if it were theirs. Across all 891 campaigns the median was $13.88 per applicant and the middle half ran $6.48 to $29.74. What moved cost most was the application: campaigns with apply rates over 35 percent paid $1.61 per applicant, and those at 20 to 35 percent paid $4.41, against $23.13 at 5 to 10 percent. Three questions on the form is how you stay in the cheap bands. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

Frequently asked questions

How do you recruit auto detailers?

Say which level of detailing you are hiring for, recruit from car washes, dealership lots, mobile detailers and enthusiasts, and lead the ad with pay structure, supplied equipment and training through to machine work. Keep the application to three questions and invite applicants for a paid trial quickly.

Where can I find car detailers to hire?

Car washes, dealership reconditioning departments, independent and mobile detailers, body shops, car clubs, employee referrals, and local Facebook and Instagram ads that show your finished work.

How much do auto detailers make?

BLS counts detailers inside cleaners of vehicles and equipment, which had a median annual wage of $35,830 in May 2025. That occupation includes car wash attendants, so it is a floor rather than the going rate for detailers doing paint correction and coatings.

Do auto detailers need a license or certification?

No formal credential is typical; BLS lists no formal educational credential for the occupation. A valid driver's license matters because detailers move customers' vehicles. Some shops pay for coating or manufacturer training as a benefit.

What screening questions should I ask auto detailer applicants?

Ask what level of detailing they have done, whether they have a valid driver's license, and whether they can work your hours. Test skill with a paid working trial rather than more form questions.

What does it cost to recruit an auto detailer on Facebook?

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark has no detailer family. The median campaign across all roles cost $13.88 per applicant. Campaigns whose forms converted over 35 percent of clickers paid $1.61 per applicant. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
