Fiber crews are built from people who are already on a pole, in a bucket or in a telecom room. Boostpoint reaches them on Facebook and Instagram with an ad written for the job you actually have.

How to Recruit Fiber Optic Technicians: Hire the Climber, Pay for the Cert, Say Where the Work Is
To recruit fiber optic technicians, decide first whether the job is outside plant (poles, buckets, trenches) or inside (telecom rooms, premises) and say so in the title. Recruit trainees from adjacent work such as cable, low-voltage and utility crews, offer to pay for FOA CFOT certification rather than requiring it, name the truck, territory and on-call in the ad, and reach candidates with Facebook and Instagram ads plus a short mobile application answered by text within minutes.
Who you are recruiting: two occupations behind one title
There is no federal occupation called "fiber optic technician." The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts most of the people who hold the title in two places, and they are different hires.
| Occupation | Employed, 2025 | Projected, 2035 | Openings a year | Median annual wage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Telecommunications line installers and repairers (outside plant; BLS lists "Fiber Optic Technician" as an example title) | 103,400 | 99,900 | 8,000 | $74,330 |
| Telecommunications equipment installers and repairers, except line installers (inside plant; example title "Fiber Optic Central Office Installer") | 143,100 | 138,400 | 11,300 | $63,890 |
BLS projects both occupations to shrink slightly over the decade (down 3.4% and 3.3%), yet each still has thousands of openings a year. Those openings come mostly from people retiring or changing jobs, which means the experienced splicer you want is working for another contractor right now. BLS lists a high school diploma and long-term on-the-job training as the typical entry path for line installers, so a large share of your crew can be trained rather than hired finished.
The certification question: CFOT is a benefit, not a gate
The Fiber Optic Association calls CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) "the primary FOA certification for all fiber optic technicians," and lists the course prerequisites as "None" (FOA). FOA's direct route to certification without a course asks for "at least 2 years recent experience working as a technician in a field that involves fiber optic communications" (FOA). Requiring CFOT on an entry-level posting therefore screens out exactly the trainees you would build a crew from. Offer to pay for it within the first year and put that in the ad. Licensing and permitting rules for the construction side of the work vary by state and locality, so check yours before writing requirements.
Where to find fiber optic technicians
- Cable and broadband installers. Already comfortable with drops, customers, ladders and trucks. Splicing and OTDR testing are teachable. See how to recruit cable installers for that pool.
- Low-voltage and structured cabling techs. The natural source for inside-plant, premises and data center fiber work.
- Utility and line crews. Groundmen and apprentices on power crews already work around poles, bucket trucks and aerial plant. Our guide on how to recruit linemen covers the overlap.
- Underground construction and locating crews. Directional boring and utility locating experience transfers directly to underground fiber placement.
- Military communications veterans. Signal and communications maintenance backgrounds bring test-equipment discipline and comfort working alone.
- Facebook and Instagram ads in your build territory. This is how you reach employed installers where they spend their evenings. Meta's Employment special ad category requires at least a 15-mile radius and blocks age, gender and ZIP targeting (details), which fits a territory-based build.
What to pay fiber optic technicians
BLS puts the May 2025 median at $74,330 a year for line installers and $63,890 for equipment installers. The wage section of our fiber optic technician job description shows the full percentile range for both. Post a real hourly range and say how overtime, storm work and per diem are paid, because on a build those can change annual earnings meaningfully, and technicians compare them line by line.
How to write the fiber optic technician ad
A fiber tech reads for: outside or inside work, the territory and whether there is overnight travel, the truck (take-home or not), the equipment you run (fusion splicer, OTDR), whether you train and certify, and the overtime pattern. Put the setting in the title: "Fiber Splicer, OSP" and "Fiber Technician, data center" attract different people, and both are better than "Telecom Technician."
- "Fiber Technician Trainee: we teach splicing and pay for your CFOT. Take-home truck, local routes."
- "Experienced OSP Splicer: ribbon and loose tube, OTDR. Local work, home every night, paid overtime."
- "Coming from cable installs? Learn fusion splicing on a paid schedule with a lead tech."
These are patterns to adapt with your own pay, territory and equipment, not copy to paste as-is. More trade-by-trade guidance is on our skilled trades recruiting hub.
Screening questions for a mobile application
- Do you have a valid driver's license with a record that meets our insurance requirements? (Knockout, if the role drives.)
- Are you able to climb ladders and work from a bucket truck in all weather? (Knockout for outside plant.)
- Have you fusion spliced fiber? None / under 1 year / 1-3 years / 3+ years (Scores, does not knock out, unless the role is a lead splicer.)
- Have you used an OTDR? (Yes/No, scores.)
- Are you able to travel overnight for projects? (Use your real frequency.)
- Do you hold a CDL? (Only if your equipment legally requires one.)
Leave out a résumé upload. A tech applying from the truck will abandon it, and the questions above tell you more.
Speed: how to recruit fiber optic technicians before another contractor does
When several contractors in a region are building at once, they are recruiting from the same small pool, and the one who calls back first has the advantage. Text applicants within minutes of applying, offer an evening call, and move qualified candidates to a ride-along or site visit within days. Boostpoint Connect, the SMS add-on to Boostpoint Attract, sends the instant text on apply and runs automated follow-up sequences per job from a shared inbox your team works from. Our recruiting text message templates give you the wording.
What it costs to recruit fiber optic technicians
The Technician / mechanic family in Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark had a median of $13.41 per applicant on Meta, a middle half between $7.40 and $23.58, a blended cost of $8.35 and a 16% apply rate. Costs are what advertisers paid for advertising only; cost per applicant is not cost per hire. See the full benchmark.
The same benchmark found that the apply experience explained 70% of cost variation between campaigns. A four-question mobile application is cheaper per applicant than a long form, whatever the trade.
Frequently asked questions
How do you recruit fiber optic technicians?
State whether the work is outside or inside plant, recruit trainees from cable, low-voltage and utility crews, pay for CFOT instead of requiring it, advertise on Facebook and Instagram in your territory, and text applicants within minutes.
Where can I find fiber optic technicians?
In adjacent work: cable and broadband installation, low-voltage and structured cabling, power line and underground construction crews, utility locating, and military communications. Most experienced splicers are employed, so reach them with ads rather than waiting on applications.
Do fiber optic technicians need to be certified?
CFOT is The Fiber Optic Association's primary certification and its course has no prerequisites, but it is an industry credential, not a federal license. Most employers do better offering to pay for it. Construction licensing and permitting rules vary by state and locality.
What do fiber optic technicians make?
BLS reports a May 2025 median annual wage of $74,330 for telecommunications line installers and repairers and $63,890 for telecommunications equipment installers and repairers.
How many fiber optic technician openings are there each year?
BLS projects about 8,000 openings a year for telecommunications line installers and repairers and about 11,300 for telecommunications equipment installers and repairers over 2025-35.
What does it cost per applicant to advertise fiber technician jobs on Facebook?
The Technician / mechanic family in Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark had a median of $13.41 per applicant and a 16% apply rate. That family covers several technician roles, and cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
Should I hire experienced splicers or train new technicians?
Both, usually. Hire a few experienced splicers as leads and build the rest of the crew from trainees; BLS lists long-term on-the-job training as the typical path for line installers.
