How to Recruit Handymen: Say Where the Job Stops, Pay the On-Call, and Call Back Today

To recruit handymen, say which setting the job is in (apartments, facilities or customers' homes), state the hourly pay, the on-call rotation and what it pays, and say clearly where the job stops and a licensed trade takes over. Recruit from construction, remodeling, apartment maintenance and self-employed handymen who want steady work, reach them with Facebook and Instagram ads, keep the application to a few questions on a phone, and call back the same day.

Who you are recruiting

BLS does not count handymen as a separate occupation. They are folded into general maintenance and repair workers (SOC 49-9071), and BLS lists "mechanics handyman" among that occupation's example titles. The occupation's national figures:

General maintenance and repair workers (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35; BLS, May 2025 median annual wage)
MeasureFigure
Employed, 20251,621,800
Projected employment, 20351,690,500 (+4.2%)
Openings a year, 2025-35148,700
Median annual wage, May 2025$49,590
Typical entry education and trainingHigh school diploma or equivalent; moderate-term on-the-job training

Because that figure includes apartment maintenance techs, building mechanics and facilities workers, the handyman you want may call themselves any of those. Use two or three of the titles in your ads and let the setting do the explaining.

Three settings, three different hires

  • Apartment and multifamily. Work orders and unit turns, with an emergency on-call rotation. The candidate wants to know units per tech, the turn standard and how on-call is paid. A housing discount is a strong draw if you offer one.
  • Commercial facilities, schools and campuses. Usually a daytime schedule without resident emergencies, which is the main selling point for candidates coming out of apartments.
  • Home-services companies. The handyman is the face of the business in a customer's home, several jobs a day. Communication and a clean background check matter as much as skill, and candidates coming from self-employment want to know how jobs are booked and whether pay is hourly or per job.

Where to find handymen

The answer to "where to find handymen" is mostly: already doing the work, on their own or for someone else.

  • Self-employed handymen who are tired of quoting, chasing payment and uneven weeks. Lead with steady hours, a company vehicle and benefits.
  • Construction and remodeling crews. Carpenters' helpers, drywall and paint crews and general laborers have most of the skills and may want a job that does not follow the construction cycle.
  • Apartment and facilities maintenance. Techs at other properties are the obvious pool for multifamily and facilities roles. Our guide on how to recruit maintenance workers covers it in depth.
  • Retired or semi-retired tradespeople for part-time and home-services roles, where judgment and customer manner count most.
  • Military veterans from facilities, engineering and vehicle maintenance roles.
  • Facebook and Instagram ads. These reach all of the groups above where they already spend time. Meta's Employment special ad category requires at least a 15-mile radius and blocks age, gender and ZIP code targeting (details).

What to pay a handyman

The BLS median for general maintenance and repair workers was $49,590 a year in May 2025. The wage section of our handyman job description shows how pay differs by setting. Post a real hourly range, and put the on-call pay next to it: an on-call week discovered after hire is one of the quickest ways to lose a maintenance hire, and experienced candidates ask about it first.

How to write the handyman ad

Three things decide whether a handyman applies: the setting, the pay including on-call, and where the job stops. Licensing rules for electrical, plumbing and contractor work are set by states and sometimes cities, and they differ, so check your state's rules and write the scope to match rather than asking a handyman to do licensed work. If your buildings were built before 1978, the EPA's RRP Rule requires that "anyone paid to perform work that disturbs painted surfaces in homes, childcare facilities and preschools built before 1978 be certified and their employees be trained (either as a certified renovator or on-the-job by a certified renovator)," and property management companies doing such work "must become a lead-safe certified firm" (EPA RRP). Saying you provide RRP training tells candidates you run a compliant shop.

  • "Maintenance Handyman, 180-unit community. Weekdays 8 to 4:30, paid on-call one week a month, housing discount."
  • "Handyman for a home-services company. Company van and tools, 4-5 booked jobs a day, no quoting or chasing payment."
  • "Facilities Handyman, school district buildings. Days only, no resident emergencies, benefits from day one."

Swap in your own unit count, hours and benefits; the details in these samples are illustrations. Guides for the licensed trades a handyman hands off to are on our skilled trades recruiting hub.

Screening questions for a mobile application

  • Which repairs have you done regularly? Drywall and paint / doors and locks / plumbing fixtures / light electrical / appliances / HVAC filters and PM (Multi-select; scores.)
  • How many years of hands-on repair work do you have? (Scores; accept property, construction, military or self-employed.)
  • Do you have a valid driver's license? (Knockout only if the role drives.)
  • Can you take a paid on-call rotation of one week a month? (Use your real rotation; knockout only if it is mandatory.)
  • Do you have your own basic hand tools? (Informational.)

Run the background check at the offer stage, not on the form, and follow the rules in pre-screening questions on what you can ask.

Speed: the best way to recruit handymen who have other options

A capable handyman can pick up side work any weekend, so the best way to recruit handymen is to make applying and hearing back feel faster than that. Text within minutes, call the same day, and offer a short paid working interview on a real work order. Boostpoint Connect, the SMS add-on to Boostpoint Attract, sends the instant text on apply, runs automated sequences set per job and keeps every conversation in a shared two-way inbox.

What it costs to recruit handymen

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark does not report a separate handyman or general maintenance family. Across all 891 campaigns, the median campaign paid $13.88 per applicant on Meta, the volume-weighted average was $8.02, and the middle half of campaigns paid between $6.48 and $29.74. Costs are what advertisers paid for advertising only; cost per applicant is not cost per hire. See the full benchmark.

The apply experience explained 70% of the variation in cost between campaigns, so the short form above is doing real work.

If they disturb painted surfaces in homes, childcare facilities or preschools built before 1978, the EPA's RRP rule requires the firm to be certified and its workers to be trained, either as certified renovators or on the job by a certified renovator. Property management companies doing that work must become lead-safe certified firms. See EPA's RRP page.
