At the BLS median, refuse collection pays more than the warehouse jobs your candidates are weighing it against. Boostpoint puts that number in front of them on Facebook and Instagram.

How to Recruit Sanitation Workers for Collection Routes and Plant Crews
To recruit sanitation workers, lead the ad with the hourly rate and the real start time (often before dawn for routes, overnight for plant sanitation), separate helper jobs from CDL driver jobs, and offer paid CDL training to turn helpers into drivers. Recruit from warehouse, construction, landscaping and delivery workers through Facebook and Instagram ads near the yard or plant, keep the application short, and text applicants within minutes.
Two jobs share the title
“Sanitation worker” means two different hires. In waste and recycling, it is a refuse collector: a route driver or a helper on the back of the truck. In food and beverage manufacturing, it is a member of the sanitation crew who cleans and sanitizes production equipment, usually overnight between production runs. The candidates overlap, but the ad and the screening do not. This guide covers both.
How to recruit sanitation workers for refuse collection
Refuse and recyclable material collectors held 156,400 jobs in 2025. BLS projects 2.1 percent growth through 2035 and about 15,500 openings a year, and lists no formal education credential as the typical entry requirement (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35). The May 2025 median annual wage was $49,690. For comparison, BLS puts hand laborers and freight, stock and material movers at $40,240 and stockers and order fillers at $37,330, two jobs your candidates are likely weighing against yours.
Where to find refuse collectors
- Warehouse, loading dock and delivery workers who already lift all shift and want better pay
- Construction laborers and landscapers looking for year-round work that does not stop in winter
- Referrals from your current crews, who know who can handle the pace
- Drivers with a CDL who want to be home every night
Most of these people are working and not on job boards. Facebook and Instagram ads within commuting distance of your yard reach them in the feed.
Helpers and CDL drivers
Post the helper job and the driver job separately. A truck with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more is a Group B heavy straight vehicle, and the person operating it needs a commercial driver’s license (49 CFR 383.5 and 383.23). Check the GVWR of your own trucks. Helpers who ride and collect do not operate the vehicle, so the CDL filter does not belong on their posting. Offering to pay for a helper’s CDL is the strongest recruiting line a hauler has: it turns an entry job into a driver career. Our CDL driver job description covers the driver side.
How to recruit plant sanitation workers
The BLS refuse figures above do not describe food plant sanitation crews. These roles clean and sanitize processing equipment and rooms, mostly on third shift, and they compete for the same candidates as production and warehouse jobs.
Say three things plainly: the shift (overnight is normal and is the main reason people decline), the conditions (wet, cold, chemicals, hot water), and the training you provide. Cleaning equipment is inside the scope of OSHA’s lockout/tagout standard, which defines servicing and maintenance to include “cleaning or unjamming of machines or equipment” where employees may be exposed to unexpected startup or release of hazardous energy (29 CFR 1910.147). Tell candidates you train them on it; it signals a safe plant.
Recruit from production operators who want a steady night shift, janitorial and commercial cleaning workers, and restaurant dishwashers and kitchen porters. Our food production worker job description covers the neighboring role, and manufacturing recruiting the rest of the plant.
What to pay sanitation workers
For refuse collection, the BLS median annual wage was $49,690 in May 2025; put your hourly rate in the first line so candidates can see it beats their current job. For plant sanitation, match or beat your own production rate plus the night differential. The wage section of our sanitation worker job description has more.
How to write the sanitation worker ad
Candidates check pay, start time and physical demands first. Two samples for hypothetical employers (use your own details):
Collection Helper, residential routes, $21 an hour, 5am start, done when the route is done. Year-round work, gear provided, and we pay for your CDL when you are ready to drive.
Sanitation Associate, food plant, 11pm to 7:30am, $19 an hour plus night differential. Clean and sanitize production equipment. Full training, including lockout/tagout. Boots and PPE provided.
Screening questions for sanitation workers
Knock out only on real requirements.
- Can you start at 5am, Monday to Friday, with some Saturdays? (knockout; use your real schedule)
- For driver roles: do you hold a CDL of the class our trucks require? (knockout for driver roles only)
- Can you lift and move containers repeatedly through a full shift, outdoors in all weather? (only if true of the job)
- Have you done physical, outdoor, route, warehouse or cleaning work before?
Speed, and what an applicant costs
Text every applicant within minutes and offer a ride-along or plant walk the same week. Candidates comparing sanitation with warehouse work take whichever employer calls first.
Boostpoint’s 2026 benchmark does not segment refuse collection or plant sanitation, so there is no sanitation-specific figure. Across all roles, the median campaign cost $13.88 per applicant and the middle half ran $6.48 to $29.74. Costs include campaign management and cover advertising only; cost per applicant is not cost per hire. See the full benchmark. Public works departments can also see our guide to municipal recruiting.
Frequently asked questions
How do you recruit sanitation workers?
Lead the ad with pay and the real start time, post helper and driver jobs separately, offer paid CDL training, recruit from warehouse, construction, landscaping and delivery workers with Facebook and Instagram ads near your yard or plant, and text applicants within minutes.
Where can I find sanitation workers?
Among warehouse and dock workers, construction laborers, landscapers, delivery drivers, janitorial staff and production operators, plus referrals from your current crews.
How much do sanitation workers make?
BLS reports a $49,690 median annual wage for refuse and recyclable material collectors in May 2025. Plant sanitation pay usually tracks the plant's production rate plus a night differential. See our sanitation worker job description.
Do sanitation workers need a CDL?
The driver does if the truck's gross vehicle weight rating is 26,001 pounds or more, which makes it a Group B heavy straight vehicle under 49 CFR 383.5. Helpers who do not operate the truck do not.
How do you recruit plant sanitation workers?
State the overnight shift, the wet and chemical conditions, and the training up front, and recruit from production operators, janitorial workers and kitchen staff. Mention lockout/tagout training, since OSHA's standard covers cleaning of machines.
What screening questions should sanitation worker applications ask?
Start time availability as a knockout, CDL class only for driver roles, the physical demands only if they are real, and prior physical or route work as a scored question.
How much does a sanitation worker applicant cost on Facebook?
Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark has no sanitation-specific figure for either route or plant roles. Across all roles, the median campaign cost $13.88 per applicant. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
Fill routes and sanitation shifts faster
Boostpoint Attract runs your sanitation worker ads on Facebook and Instagram with the creative made for you, and Boostpoint Connect texts each applicant the moment they apply, so you reach them before the warehouse down the road. See pricing.
