Mover Job Description: Duties, Responsibilities, Template & Pay (2026)

A mover carries a stranger's entire household down a flight of stairs without breaking any of it, in July. This page has a mover job description template you can copy, what the work pays, and the four things a moving company posting has to say to fill a crew before peak season instead of during it.

What a mover does

Movers sit inside the O*NET occupation for laborers and freight, stock and material movers, which describes moving freight, stock and materials by hand or with equipment, sorting cargo before loading and unloading, installing protective devices such as bracing, padding or strapping to prevent shifting or damage, attaching identifying tags to containers, and recording the number of units handled.

That is the warehouse version. On a residential crew the same tasks happen inside somebody's house, which changes the job more than the task list suggests.

Prep and protect. Floor runners, door jamb protectors, banister wrap, blanket-wrapping furniture, disassembling beds and tables, padding and shrink-wrapping. Most damage claims trace back to this half-hour.

Load. Building a tight, stacked load in the truck so nothing shifts on the road. This is the skilled part of the job and it is why an experienced lead loader is worth several dollars an hour more than a helper.

Carry. Stairs, elevators, long carries from the truck, awkward items — sleeper sofas, gun safes, treadmills, pianos if you do them. Dollies, straps, shoulder harnesses and four-wheelers.

Deliver and place. Unloading, reassembling, putting things where the customer wants them, walking the inventory, getting the paperwork signed.

Represent the company. Movers are alone in a customer's home for six hours on the most stressful day of that customer's year. The review, the tip and the referral all come from how the crew behaves, not how fast the truck loads.

If you are hiring for a warehouse, distribution centre or plant rather than a moving company, the material handler job description is the closer template — same occupation code, very different day.

Requirements: what is required, what is preferred, and what costs you applicants

Moving competes for exactly the same person as warehouse work, construction labour and delivery. It pays comparably, the hours are longer, and the work is harder. What it has that they do not is cash tips at the end of the day and a very short path to more money. Almost no moving posting says either.

RequirementWhat to know
ExperienceNot needed, and requiring it is the most common self-inflicted wound in this sector. A helper who can lift, show up and be pleasant is trainable in two weeks. State that you train.
The liftBe specific: repeated 50–75 lb lifts, team lifts above that, stairs. Vague physical language reads as hiding something. A concrete number reads as honest and self-selects correctly.
Driver's licenceOnly required if the role drives. Making a licence mandatory for helper roles cuts a large share of the available pool for no reason. List it as a preferred item with the pay differential attached.
Background checkLegitimately required — these employees are unsupervised in customers' homes. Say what it covers and be clear about what is and is not disqualifying; vagueness here costs you applicants who would pass.
ScheduleSay the start time and say that days end when the job ends. Movers quit over surprise 12-hour days more than over pay. Also say which day is the guaranteed day off.
TipsName the number. Tips are frequently 15–25% of take-home on residential work and they are the single strongest selling point this job has against a warehouse shift at the same rate. Leaving them out of the posting throws that advantage away.
SeasonalityBe honest. If hours drop in winter, say so and say what the winter schedule looks like — people budget around it and the ones who leave in November were going to leave anyway.
The two sentences that do the most work: "tips average $[00] a day, paid in cash the same day" and "no experience needed, we train you on a crew." Together they change the effective rate and remove the barrier, and most competing postings say neither.

Mover duties, written for a posting

Give the shape of the day. Start time, how many jobs, crew size, truck size, whether it is local or long-distance, and what a typical day looks like start to finish. A moving job is physically legible in a way most jobs are not — describing it accurately is most of the screening.

Name the hard parts by name. Stairs, no-elevator walk-ups, long carries, pianos and safes if you do them, heat in summer. Candidates who are put off by that sentence were going to quit in week one.

Separate helper from lead. A helper carries and wraps; a lead loads the truck, runs the job, handles the customer and the paperwork. If you are hiring both, say so and say what the lead rate is — it gives every helper applicant a visible reason to stay past the first season.

Keep the list to eight or nine lines and put the customer-facing part in it. Movers who are good with people are worth more than movers who are fast, and a posting that only describes lifting will attract only lifters.

How to customize it by type of move

Local residential

The default above. Hourly, tips, crew of two to four, one to three jobs a day, home most nights. Lead with the tips and the same-day pay-out.

Long distance and interstate

Different job: nights away, per diem, days or weeks on the road, and usually a driver-plus-helper structure. Say the number of nights out, the per diem, how the pay works on the road, and how long a typical run is. This role competes with trucking, not with warehouse work, and should be priced and written that way.

Commercial and office moves

Nights and weekends, more equipment and less furniture, elevators and loading docks, building access rules and COIs. Steadier and more predictable than residential, fewer tips. Say the shift pattern up front, because an overnight office-move schedule is either a strong attraction or an instant disqualifier and there is no middle.

Labor-only and container loading

No truck, no driving, just loading and unloading customer-supplied trucks or portable containers. Shorter jobs, lower barrier, good part-time and student fit. Say the typical job length and whether you guarantee a minimum.

Driver roles

Box trucks under 26,001 lbs GVWR generally do not require a CDL, which is worth stating explicitly — many candidates assume they cannot apply. Say the truck size, the licence and MVR requirements, and the differential. See the delivery driver job description for the driving-side template.

What it costs to reach movers on social

Warehouse and production is one of our highest-volume families: across 82 campaigns in the 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark the median cost per applicant was $9.83, the middle half $3.15 to $18.72, with a volume-blended figure of $4.44 and a 20% apply rate. The all-campaign median across 891 campaigns was $13.88.

At $4.44 blended, advertising is rarely the constraint. The constraints are the application form and the speed of the callback: across the benchmark, campaigns converting over 20% of clicks paid $4.41 an applicant and those under 10% paid $53.77. Because these roles turn over continuously, run the campaign continuously at a modest budget — past three impressions a month the median cost per applicant roughly doubles, and a site's catchment is a fixed drive-time ring. For a seasonal peak, start the campaign six to eight weeks before you need the crew — hiring in June for June is what makes movers expensive.

Writing the ad version

The description is the document. The advertisement is read on a phone by somebody who has other options at a similar rate. It needs the hourly rate, the tips in dollars, that no experience is needed, and the start time — in the first three lines. Our campaign data puts the best-converting length at 201–400 words, and for a role like this the shorter end works.

Three or four questions on the form, then call the same day. Every extra field costs completions, and the crew you want has applied somewhere else this morning.

What movers earn

Laborers and freight, stock and material movers had a median of $19.35 an hour, $40,240 a year in 2025, across roughly 2,988,900 people with about 384,300 openings a year — one of the largest occupations in the country. Moving-company crews sit in that band before tips, and tips are what make the comparison misleading.

Comparison roleMedian pay (2025)Openings per year
Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers$28.19/hr · $58,640~241,200
Construction laborers$22.66/hr · $47,120~205,700
Industrial truck and tractor operators$22.32/hr · $46,420~72,300
Laborers and material movers$19.35/hr · $40,240~384,300
Light truck delivery drivers$18.64/hr · $38,770~103,900
Stockers and order fillers$17.95/hr · $37,330~472,300

On base rate alone a mover is paid roughly what a stocker is paid and less than a construction labourer, for harder work. That is the real competitive position, and no amount of posting craft changes it.

What changes it is the two things the table cannot show. Tips on residential work commonly add fifteen to twenty-five per cent to take-home and arrive in cash the same day, which matters enormously to somebody choosing between two jobs this week. And the internal ladder is short and real: helper to lead mover to driver to dispatch or estimator, each step a visible raise. A posting that states the tip average and names the ladder is competing at a different effective rate than one that advertises $19 an hour.

Frequently asked questions

What does a mover do?

A mover protects the home with floor runners and door jamb guards, blanket-wraps and pads furniture, disassembles and reassembles beds and tables, loads the truck to a stable stack, carries items using dollies and straps including up and down stairs, unloads and places everything where the customer wants it, and completes the inventory and paperwork. On a residential crew the customer-facing part — six hours in somebody's home on a stressful day — is as much of the job as the lifting.

How much do movers make?

Laborers and freight, stock and material movers had a median of $19.35 an hour, or $40,240 a year, in 2025. Residential moving crews sit in that band on base pay, but tips typically add fifteen to twenty-five per cent of take-home on residential jobs and are usually paid in cash the same day, which is why the base rate understates what the job actually pays.

Do you need experience to be a mover?

No. Most moving companies train helpers on a crew within about two weeks, and requiring experience is the most common avoidable mistake in these postings. What the job needs is the physical capacity for repeated 50 to 75 lb lifts across a long day, reliability at a 6:30am start, and the ability to be pleasant in a customer's home.

Do movers need a driver's licence or a CDL?

Only for driving roles, and usually not a CDL. Box trucks under 26,001 lbs GVWR generally do not require one. Helper roles need no licence at all, and making one mandatory across the board removes a large share of the available pool for no operational reason — list it as preferred, with the pay differential attached.

What should a mover job description include?

The hourly rate and the typical daily tip amount, the start time and that days end when the job ends, crew size and number of jobs a day, whether the role is local or long distance, the concrete lift requirement, the background check and what it covers, whether you train, the seasonality of hours, and the promotion path from helper to lead to driver.

What is the difference between a mover and a material handler?

They share an occupation code but not a day. A material handler moves freight and stock inside a warehouse, plant or distribution centre on a fixed shift. A mover works in customers' homes on variable-length jobs, handles the customer relationship, earns tips, and needs a background check because the work is unsupervised in private homes.

Why is it hard to hire movers?

Because the base rate sits near stocking and below construction labour while the work is harder and the days longer, and because most postings advertise only that base rate. The employers who fill crews reliably publish the tip average in dollars, say they train, name the start time and the long days honestly, and show the ladder to lead mover and driver.

When should a moving company start hiring for peak season?

Six to eight weeks before the crews are needed. Residential moving demand concentrates heavily between May and September, which means every moving company in a market competes for the same labour in the same weeks. Recruiting in June for June is what makes movers expensive; recruiting in March is what makes them available.

Hiring movers before peak season?

Crews get expensive in June because everyone hires in June. Running the campaign in March is the whole difference.
