An assembler puts the product together — to a print, to a takt time, to a quality standard that somebody downstream will check. It is one of the largest occupations in American manufacturing and one of the widest pay bands in it, from $44,650 on a general line to $65,380 in aircraft. What an assembler does

The work is building a product from components, in sequence, to a documented standard. Around that sit four things that define whether the job is a good one.

The build. Reading prints, work instructions and bills of material; positioning, fitting, fastening, soldering, wiring, riveting or bonding; using hand tools, powered tools, fixtures and torque equipment; and doing it at the rate the line runs.

The quality. First-off inspection, in-process checks, torque verification, functional test, and knowing what a defect looks like before it reaches the next station. In a well-run plant the assembler is the first inspector, not the last suspect.

The station. Setup and changeover, stocking components, keeping the area to 5S standard, recording production and scrap, and flagging a shortage before it stops the line.

The safety. Machine guarding, lockout-tagout where applicable, ergonomics and repetitive-motion management, PPE, and the lifting the job actually involves.

Say which product and which method. "Assembler" tells a candidate nothing; "wire harness assembler, hand crimp and IPC-A-620 standard" tells an experienced one everything.

Requirements: what is required, what is preferred, and what costs you applicants

This occupation generates about 177,500 openings a year while shrinking slightly. That combination — enormous replacement need, no growth — means you are competing for the same hourly worker as every warehouse, store and delivery operation nearby, and any requirement that is not genuinely necessary is a gift to them.

Mandatory overtime discovered in month two is one of the largest causes of early attrition in manufacturing.
Physical requirementsConcrete and honest: standing, lifting weight, repetitive motion, fine detail work, temperature. Repetitive-motion demand in particular is worth naming, because it is a real reason people leave and an honest posting selects better.
LanguageIf the work instructions are bilingual, say so. Requiring English fluency where it is not needed removes a large part of the manufacturing labour pool.
Three numbers fill an assembly role: the rate, the shift differential, and the overtime reality. A plant that says "second shift, $2.00 differential, four hours of voluntary overtime most weeks, mandatory Saturdays only in October and November" will out-recruit a higher base rate that leaves all three to be discovered.

Assembler duties, written for a posting

Describe the station. What is being built, whether it is a moving line, a cell or a bench, the cycle time or units per shift, the team size, and what tools and fixtures the job uses. An experienced assembler reads that and knows whether the work suits them; an inexperienced one gets a realistic picture instead of a surprise.

Say what the environment is. Temperature, noise, whether the plant is climate-controlled, whether the work is seated or standing, and how much of the shift is repetitive. Plants that are clean and climate-controlled should say so — it is a genuine differentiator against warehouse work at the same rate and it is almost never mentioned.

Keep the list to eight or nine lines, ordered by how much of the shift each takes, and include the quality checks and the record-keeping. They are part of the job and naming them signals a plant that runs properly.

How to customize it by product

General and miscellaneous assembly

The largest group by far at 1,403,500 people and a $44,650 median. Compete on shift, differential, cleanliness and progression rather than on the base rate, which is close to everyone else's.

Electrical and electronic assembly

246,300 people at a $45,850 median. Soldering, wiring, harnesses, ESD control and often IPC standards. Name the standard if you hold one — it separates your posting from every generic assembly ad and reaches people who trained to it.

Engine and machine assembly

33,500 people at a $53,710 median, well above general assembly. Torque specifications, sub-assemblies, precision fit and often heavier components. Say the product and the torque and measuring equipment.

Structural metal fabricators and fitters

52,300 people at a $51,330 median. Layout, fitting, tacking and working from structural drawings, usually with welding adjacent. If welding is part of it, say which processes and whether you certify. See the welder job description.

Aircraft structure and systems assembly

34,400 people at a $65,380 median — the highest-paid assembly work by some distance. Expect clearance or citizenship requirements on defence work, tight documentation standards and formal training. Name all three; candidates for this work know the drill and screen for employers who do too.

Temp-to-hire and staffing-agency roles

BLS puts temporary help services at a $36,860 median, roughly $8,600 below the occupational median. If your role converts to permanent, say the timeline and the converted rate explicitly — it is the single most important fact for a candidate deciding between a temp assignment and a direct hire.

What it costs to reach assemblers on social

Warehouse and production is one of our highest-volume role families: across 82 campaigns in the 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark the median cost per applicant was $9.83, with a middle half from $3.15 to $18.72, a volume-blended figure of $4.44 and a 20% apply rate. Across all 891 managed campaigns the median was $13.88 and the cheapest decile $2.91.

At $4.44 blended, media cost is almost never what stops a plant filling assembly roles. Two other things do. The application form — across the benchmark, campaigns converting over 20% of clicks paid $4.41 an applicant and those under 10% paid $53.77, and a form asking for full employment history on a mobile phone is how you land in the second band. And speed: for hourly manufacturing roles the employer who calls the same day gets the candidate, because that candidate has applied to three plants.

Because assembly hiring is continuous rather than episodic, run the campaign continuously at a modest budget. Past three impressions in a month the median cost per applicant roughly doubles, and a plant's realistic catchment is a thirty-minute drive.

The description is the document. The advertisement is read on a phone by somebody who could take a warehouse shift instead. It needs the rate, the shift and differential, the overtime reality, and that no experience is needed — in the first three lines. Employment is projected to grow just 1% between 2025 and 2035 while still producing about 177,500 openings a year. That is an almost entirely replacement-driven market, and the replacement is driven by churn rather than retirement in most plants.

Which points at where the real saving is. At a $4.44 blended cost per applicant, advertising is cheap; the expensive part is training somebody for four weeks and losing them in month three to a plant with a better shift differential or a cleaner building. The plants that fill reliably are usually the ones that fixed that first.
