What a CNC operator does
The operator runs the machine; the programmer writes what it runs; the machinist can do both and can also make the part without a program. In a small shop one person is all three. In a production plant they are three different jobs on three different pay scales, and confusing them in a posting is the fastest way to get a stack of applicants who cannot do the work you meant.
Day to day, an operator loads stock or blanks, sets work offsets and tool offsets, runs the program, watches the first article, measures with calipers, micrometers and gauges, adjusts offsets to hold tolerance as tooling wears, changes inserts and tools, clears chips, keeps coolant right, and logs what ran. On a good floor the operator is also the first person to notice a bad tool, a shifting fixture or a drawing that does not match the part.
Here is the honest part about pay data, because it changes how you should read every salary page on this topic. The federal Occupational Outlook Handbook does not publish a standalone “CNC operator” occupation. The work is split across two of its groups. Machinists and tool and die makers — 344,900 jobs in 2025, a combined median of $28.66 an hour or $59,620 a year, projected to decline 1% over 2025–35 with about 30,400 openings a year, essentially all of them replacements — break out to $58,750 for machinists and $64,050 for tool and die makers in the May 2025 data. Metal and plastic machine setters, operators and tenders is the larger group at 963,000 jobs, a $22.94 hourly or $47,700 annual median, projected to decline 7% with about 78,100 openings a year. Inside that group, computer numerically controlled tool operators had a May 2025 median of $50,690 and CNC tool programmers $68,120.
So the number you should benchmark against is $50,690 if you are hiring an operator, not the $47,700 group median and not the $58,750 machinist figure. Both of those are used constantly in job ads and both are wrong for this role in opposite directions.

How to customize it for your setting
Production shop, long runs
The job is consistency and uptime. Say how many machines an operator tends, what the cycle time looks like, and whether setups are done by a dedicated setter. Candidates who prefer this work will self-select if you describe it accurately, and the ones who would be bored will not apply — which is the point.
Job shop, short runs
Variety is the offer. Frequent setups, new prints and a wider skill ladder attract people who left production for exactly that reason. Name the machine list and typical lot sizes; this audience reads them the way a driver reads equipment specs.
Aerospace, medical and tight-tolerance work
Name the standard and the inspection regime. Candidates who hold that tolerance every day identify themselves by the vocabulary, and the certification environment is a genuine differentiator worth stating.
Second and third shift
Do not treat off-shift as a footnote. State the hours, the differential in dollars, and any compressed-week structure. A 3x12 weekend shift paying 40 hours is a competitive offer for a specific person, and it needs to be the first line, not a detail discovered on the application.

Read that as a floor rather than a forecast. Writing the ad version
