Field Service Technician Job Description: Duties, Template & Pay (2026)
“Field service technician” is a job shape rather than a trade — one person, a van, a territory and somebody else’s broken equipment — and the pay range underneath it runs from about $49,000 to $74,000 depending on what the equipment is. This page has a template you can copy and the specificity that decides whether anyone qualified applies.
What a field service technician does
The title describes a working pattern shared across a dozen trades: the technician travels to the customer, diagnoses and repairs equipment on site, and is the company as far as that customer is concerned. What they are actually fixing changes everything about who can do it.
Diagnose on site. Arriving at a machine that is down, with a customer who is losing money every hour it stays down, and working out what is wrong from symptoms, error codes, schematics and whatever the operator can tell you.
Repair. Mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, controls or software, depending on the equipment. Carrying enough parts to fix most things first time, and knowing what to order when you cannot.
Preventive maintenance. Scheduled service visits, which are the steady half of the calendar and the half that keeps the customer relationship intact.
Document. Service reports, parts used, labour, warranty claims and recommendations — usually in a field service app, usually before leaving the site.
Represent the company. Explaining to a plant manager why their machine failed and what it will cost. A technician who can do this well is worth considerably more than one who cannot, and it is the part almost no posting screens for.

Requirements: what is required, what is preferred, and what costs you applicants
This role competes with in-plant maintenance jobs that have no windscreen time and no on-call. What it offers instead is autonomy, variety and usually better pay — but only if the posting quantifies the things that make field work expensive for the candidate.
| Requirement | What to know |
|---|---|
| Naming the equipment | The most important thing on the page. A technician qualified on your equipment is looking for your equipment by name. Generic "industrial equipment" postings are read as staffing-agency listings and skipped. |
| Experience | Specify the fundamentals rather than the brand where you can train. Electrical and mechanical diagnostic ability transfers across equipment; brand-specific knowledge is usually a few weeks. Saying you train widens the pool substantially. |
| The van | Say who provides it, whether it goes home with the technician, and whether there is a fuel card. Home-start in a company van is worth real money against a job that requires a yard run each morning, and it is frequently buried. |
| Tools | Say what you supply. Field technicians accumulate expensive tools; a company that provides them, or pays an annual allowance, should say so in the benefits list rather than leaving it to be asked. |
| Portal-to-portal | Whether the paid day starts at the door or at the first call is a real difference in income, and candidates ask it in the first phone conversation. Answer it in the posting. |
| On-call | Name the rotation, the call-out minimum and the pay. Unquantified on-call is the most common reason an experienced field technician declines, because they have been burned by it before. |
| Travel | Give a percentage and a per diem. "Some overnight travel" is read as the worst case, which costs you candidates who would have accepted the real number. |
| Territory | State the geography and the typical calls per day. A dense metro route and a three-state territory are different jobs at the same title and rate. |
Field service technician duties, written for a posting
Lead with the equipment and the customer type. Manufacturing plants, hospitals, restaurants, construction sites — the environment determines the working day as much as the machinery.
Say how the work arrives. Dispatched calls, a fixed PM schedule, or a mix, and what proportion is emergency breakdown work. Breakdown-heavy routes are more stressful and should be described as such.
Describe the support. Technical helpline, senior technicians, manufacturer support, and what happens at 9pm when the technician is stuck. Field technicians work alone and the quality of the backup is a genuine selling point.
Keep the responsibilities to eight or nine lines and include the customer-facing duties. Being able to explain a failure to a plant manager is a real skill and naming it attracts better candidates than a pure wrench list.
How to customize it by equipment
Industrial and manufacturing equipment
The template above. Plants, shutdowns, PLCs and drives, lockout-tagout, and downtime pressure. Name the manufacturers and the control platforms.
Material handling
Forklifts, conveyors, dock equipment and AS/RS. Often dealer-based with a defined customer list. Closer to the maintenance technician role; say whether it is shop or field and what the mix is.
Medical and laboratory equipment
Hospitals and clinics, tighter regulatory documentation, background checks and vendor credentialing, and often a more professional presentation standard. Say the credentialing requirement, because it takes time and candidates should know.
Food service and refrigeration
Restaurants and grocery, heavy emergency call volume, EPA 608 certification and awkward hours. Be honest about the after-hours pattern. The HVAC technician description covers the adjacent refrigeration trade.
Controls and automation-heavy roles
Where the job is more software than spanner — PLC programming, networks, integration. Pay accordingly: commercial and industrial electronics repairers sit at a $35.62 median against $23.84 for general maintenance, and posting an automation role at a general maintenance rate fills nothing.
What it costs to reach field service technicians on social
Technician and mechanic roles are our largest single role family: across 145 campaigns in the 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark the median cost per applicant was $13.41, with a middle half of $7.40 to $23.58, a blended figure of $8.35 and a 16% apply rate. The wider Skilled Trades and Field Service sector — 335 campaigns — ran an $11.89 median at 18%.
What moves that number is not the bid. Across all 891 campaigns, campaigns converting under 10% of clicks paid a median $53.77 an applicant and those over 20% paid $4.41. The second lever is frequency: past three impressions in a month the median cost per applicant roughly doubles, and a shop's realistic catchment is a short drive, so a steady small budget beats a burst. Name the equipment in the ad creative itself — targeting is far less effective than a headline a qualified technician recognises as their own machinery.

Writing the ad version
The description is the document. The advertisement is read on a phone by somebody who has other options at a similar rate. It needs the equipment by name, the rate, the van and tools, the on-call rotation and the travel percentage — in the first three lines. Our campaign data puts the best-converting length at 201–400 words, and for a role like this the shorter end works.
Three or four questions on the form, then call the same day. Every extra field costs completions, and the technician you want has applied somewhere else this morning.
What field service technicians earn
There is no single “field service technician” occupation in federal data, which is exactly why the pay range is so wide. The occupations the role is classified under bracket it:
| Occupation the role maps to | Median pay (2025) | Employed | Openings per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical and electronics repairers, commercial and industrial equipment | $35.62/hr · $74,090 | 61,100 | ~4,700 |
| HVAC mechanics and installers | $29.33/hr · $61,010 | 425,200 | ~40,100 |
| Maintenance and repair workers, general | $23.84/hr · $49,590 | 1,629,700 | ~159,800 |
That is a spread of nearly $25,000 a year under one job title, and it is decided by how much of the work is controls, electronics and diagnostics rather than mechanical repair. A posting that does not make clear which end of the range it sits at will be ignored by the technicians at the top of it and will attract people who cannot do the work at the bottom.
The recruiting implication is the same one that runs through every technical trade. The 61,100-person electronics repair pool is small, expensive and fully employed. The 1.63 million general maintenance pool is enormous, and a maintenance technician with solid electrical fundamentals can be trained onto specific equipment in weeks. Employers who say “we train on our equipment — bring the fundamentals” are recruiting from a pool twenty-six times larger, at technician-family prices of $13.41 a median applicant rather than competing for specialists nobody can hire.
Frequently asked questions
What does a field service technician do?
A field service technician travels to customer sites to diagnose and repair equipment: working out faults from symptoms, error codes and schematics, carrying out mechanical, electrical, hydraulic or control repairs, performing scheduled preventive maintenance, managing van stock and parts, completing service reports and warranty claims on site, and advising the customer on what failed and what it will cost.
How much do field service technicians make?
It depends entirely on the equipment, because there is no single federal occupation for the role. Commercial and industrial electronics repairers had a median of $35.62 an hour or $74,090; HVAC mechanics and installers $29.33 or $61,010; general maintenance and repair workers $23.84 or $49,590. Controls- and electronics-heavy work sits at the top of that range and mechanical repair at the bottom.
What should a field service technician job description include?
The equipment by manufacturer and type — this matters more than anything else on the page — the territory and typical calls per day, the rate, whether a company van goes home with the technician and whether there is a fuel card, who supplies tools, whether the day is paid portal-to-portal, the on-call rotation with its pay, the travel percentage with per diem, and the technical support available out of hours.
What qualifications does a field service technician need?
Diagnostic ability above all: reading schematics, using electrical test equipment and reasoning from symptoms to cause. Brand-specific knowledge is usually a few weeks of training, which is why employers who state that they train on their own equipment recruit far more successfully than those requiring existing experience on it. A clean driving record is a genuine requirement, since the technician is insured on a company vehicle.
Why is it hard to hire field service technicians?
Usually because the posting does not name the equipment, so qualified technicians never recognise it as their job, and because the things that make field work costly for a candidate — on-call, travel, whether the paid day starts at home — are left unquantified. Experienced technicians have been burned by vague on-call before and treat silence as a warning.
What is the difference between a field service technician and a maintenance technician?
A maintenance technician works on one site's equipment, usually on a shift, with colleagues nearby. A field service technician travels to many customers, works alone, diagnoses unfamiliar faults under time pressure with a customer watching, and handles the commercial relationship. The technical skills overlap heavily; the autonomy, the customer-facing element and the on-call do not.
Is field service a good career move from plant maintenance?
For many technicians, yes — it typically pays better, offers more variety and more autonomy, and the diagnostic skills transfer directly. The costs are windscreen time, on-call rotations and working alone. Employers recruiting from plant maintenance should be explicit about all three, because a candidate who discovers the on-call reality after starting leaves quickly.
Should a field service technician job description say the travel percentage?
Yes, with a number and a per diem. "Some overnight travel" is read as the worst plausible case, which loses candidates who would have accepted the actual figure. The same applies to on-call: naming the rotation, the call-out minimum and the pay converts far better than leaving a candidate to imagine it.
