How to Recruit Lab Assistants: Where to Find Them and What Makes Them Apply

To recruit lab assistants, hire for accuracy and reliability, then train. Specimen processing roles typically ask for a high school diploma, not lab experience, so advertise to detail-minded people in pharmacy, retail, clinic and warehouse jobs as well as phlebotomy and MLT students. Lead the ad with the shift, the pay and the differential, say whether the job draws blood or runs tests, keep the mobile application short, and call back the same day.

Who you are actually hiring

"Lab assistant" is not its own BLS occupation. O*NET lists Lab Assistant, Medical Lab Assistant and Specimen Processor among the reported job titles for medical and clinical laboratory technicians (SOC 29-2012), and BLS publishes projections for clinical laboratory technologists and technicians combined: 343,000 employed in 2025 and about 20,800 openings a year through 2035, at a May 2025 median annual wage of $62,930. That group includes degreed technicians and technologists, so its wage is a ceiling for a lab assistant, not a going rate.

For a role that is mostly collecting, processing and routing specimens, phlebotomists are the closer comparison: 143,900 employed in 2025, about 18,000 openings a year, and a May 2025 median of $45,230 (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35; BLS, May 2025 median annual wage). The lab assistant job description covers the duties, template and pay detail.

Decide whether the job includes testing

This changes who you can hire. Under 42 CFR 493.1423, anyone performing moderate complexity testing must hold a state license where the state requires one and meet one of the listed qualification routes; the route open to lab assistants without a laboratory degree is a high school diploma or equivalent plus documented laboratory training appropriate for the testing, completed before analyzing patient specimens. If the role is specimen processing only, say so in the ad. If it includes testing, name the tests and say you provide the documented training. Ask your laboratory director before you post.

Where to find lab assistants

  • Pharmacy, retail and clinic front-desk workers. People who already handle labels, orders and patients accurately. They are the largest trainable pool, and they are on Facebook and Instagram, not searching "specimen processor".
  • Phlebotomy students and recent graduates. Contact local phlebotomy and medical assistant programs; many graduates want lab experience while they build toward the next credential.
  • MLT and MLS students. Evening and weekend specimen processing shifts fit class schedules, and the job is a pipeline into your technician roles.
  • Warehouse and inventory workers. Sorting, scanning and accuracy targets translate directly to accessioning in a reference lab.
  • Your own couriers and patient service staff, plus referrals from current lab staff.

Phlebotomy rules vary by state

If the lab assistant will draw blood, check your state first. California, for example, issues three levels of phlebotomy certificate through the Department of Public Health: Limited Phlebotomy Technician (skin puncture only), Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (skin puncture and venipuncture) and Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (adding arterial puncture). Other states have different rules or none, so name the exact certificate the job requires, or say you will train and sponsor it. See the phlebotomist job description if drawing blood is most of the job.

What to pay lab assistants

BLS does not publish a lab assistant wage. Use the phlebotomist median ($45,230 in May 2025) as the closer reference for a processing and collection role, check what hospitals, reference labs and draw sites near you post, and publish the range with shift differentials. If your specimen volume peaks on evenings and nights, a strong differential is often the fastest way to fill those shifts. The job description page has pay by setting.

How to write the lab assistant ad

A lab assistant candidate checks the shift, the pay, and whether they need lab experience or a certificate. Then: the setting (hospital, reference lab, draw station), whether they will draw blood, and the path to MLT or other credentials.

Sample ad: Now hiring lab assistants, evening shift. Receive, label and process patient specimens so our lab team can deliver results on time. No lab experience needed: if you are careful with details, we will train you. Hourly rate and evening differential listed in the ad, benefits, and tuition help toward an MLT program. Apply in two minutes.

Headlines to test: "Detail-oriented? Start a healthcare career in our lab." / "Evening lab assistant, paid training, shift differential." / "From pharmacy counter to hospital lab: we train." For ad structure, see the healthcare job ad templates.

Screening questions for lab assistants

  • Do you have a high school diploma or equivalent? (knockout if your testing policy or CLIA route requires it)
  • Can you work the posted shift, including every other weekend? (knockout, match to your real schedule)
  • Do you hold the phlebotomy certificate this job requires? (knockout only if the job draws blood and your state requires it)
  • Have you worked in a lab, pharmacy, clinic or other healthcare setting? (not a knockout)
  • Are you enrolled in a phlebotomy, MLT or MLS program? (not a knockout)

In the interview, ask what they would do with a specimen whose label does not match the requisition. The right answer is to stop and follow the rejection procedure, never to fix the label.

Speed and the first 90 days

Healthcare applicants often apply to several systems at once. Text within minutes and offer an interview within two days. After the hire, a written training checklist, signed off task by task, protects quality and gives the new assistant a visible sense of progress.

What it costs to recruit lab assistants

Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark does not have a role family specific to lab assistants, so use the overall figures: a median campaign cost of $13.88 per applicant, with the middle half between $6.48 and $29.74. Those are what advertisers paid for advertising only, and cost per applicant is not cost per hire. The bigger lever is the apply experience, which explained 70 percent of cost variation between campaigns: campaigns with an apply rate of 20 to 35 percent came in at $4.41 per applicant, against $53.77 for campaigns below 5 percent. Frequently asked questions

How do I recruit lab assistants with no experience?

Advertise to detail-minded people in pharmacy, retail, clinic and warehouse jobs, say you provide training, and be clear whether the job includes drawing blood or running tests. Keep the application short and follow up the same day.

Where can I find lab assistants?

Pharmacy and clinic staff, phlebotomy and medical assistant program graduates, MLT and MLS students, warehouse and inventory workers used to accuracy targets, your own couriers and patient service staff, and referrals from current lab employees.

What qualifications does a lab assistant need?

For specimen processing, usually a high school diploma and on-the-job training. If the job includes moderate complexity testing, 42 CFR 493.1423 requires a state license where the state requires one, and one qualifying route is a high school diploma plus documented laboratory training before analyzing patient specimens. Phlebotomy rules vary by state.

What should a lab assistant job ad include?

The shift and differential, the pay range, the setting, whether the job draws blood or runs tests, whether lab experience is required, the training you provide, and any tuition help toward an MLT or other credential.

How much do lab assistants make?

BLS does not publish a lab assistant wage. Phlebotomists, the closer comparison for a collection and processing role, had a May 2025 median of $45,230. Clinical laboratory technologists and technicians combined had a median of $62,930, which includes degreed staff.

How much does it cost to recruit a lab assistant?

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark has no lab assistant role family. Across all campaigns, the median was $13.88 per applicant on Facebook and Instagram, with the middle half between $6.48 and $29.74. That is cost per applicant, not cost per hire.

What screening questions should I ask lab assistant applicants?

Only knockouts the job requires: shift availability, a high school diploma where your testing policy needs it, and a phlebotomy certificate only if the job draws blood and your state requires it. Ask about healthcare experience without screening people out for lacking it.
