How to Hire Pharmacists: Win the Ones Who Already Have a Job

To hire pharmacists, recruit licensed pharmacists who already have jobs, because a pharmacist who applies to you is usually leaving one. Lead the ad with pay, schedule and staffing (script volume and technician support per shift), say whether you help with licensure transfer from another state, keep the first application to four questions, and respond the same day. Recruit through pharmacy schools, state associations, relocating pharmacists and social ads that reach passive candidates.

Who you are actually hiring

BLS Employment Projections 2025-35 count 325,200 pharmacists in 2025, projected to reach 342,300 by 2035 (growth of 5.2%), with about 12,500 openings a year. The BLS, May 2025 median annual wage was $140,910, and BLS lists a doctoral or professional degree as the typical entry-level education.

For an employer, the practical reading is that the pool is small. A pharmacist who applies to you is usually leaving a job, not finding a first one. That changes the recruiting: you are competing with their current employer on schedule, workload and pay, and the ad has to answer those questions before they will take a call.

Licensure is the gate, and transfer is the opportunity

Licensure is granted by each state's board of pharmacy. NABP describes the NAPLEX as the exam taken by recent college of pharmacy graduates, which boards of pharmacy use as one component of the licensure process. Many jurisdictions also require a pharmacy law exam, the MPJE or UMPJE.

For pharmacists moving from another state, NABP's Electronic Licensure Transfer Program lets a pharmacist who holds at least one current, active, unrestricted license in good standing transfer it to other states. The receiving board still makes the licensure decision, and some states require the law exam before the transfer application. If you are willing to wait for a transfer, and to cover its cost, say so in the ad. It widens your pool beyond your own state's licensees.

Where to find pharmacists

  • Currently employed pharmacists in your market. The largest pool. They are not reading job boards daily, but they do see a well-targeted ad in their feed.
  • Colleges of pharmacy. Build relationships with nearby schools, host students on rotations, and make offers before graduation. Students who rotate through your pharmacy know what the job is like.
  • State pharmacy associations. Meetings, job boards and newsletters reach pharmacists who stay active in the profession.
  • Relocating pharmacists, who can move a license through licensure transfer. Ads aimed at a wider radius around a destination metro reach people considering a move.
  • Your own technicians and interns who are in or finishing pharmacy school.
  • Per diem and relief pharmacists who might take a permanent role for the right schedule.

Staffing agencies can cover a gap while you recruit, but they rarely solve it. The pharmacist you keep is the one who chose your schedule and team.

How to recruit pharmacists: what the job ad must say

A pharmacist reading your ad on a phone checks pay, schedule and workload first. Workload means the numbers they will ask on the phone anyway: prescriptions a day, technicians and pharmacists on each shift, whether there is a drive-through, and whether they will ever work alone. Then the setting (retail, hospital, long-term care, specialty), clinical work such as immunizations if your state and site allow it, and what you offer toward licensure transfer or continuing education.

Sample ad: "Staff Pharmacist, [Pharmacy], [City]. $[rate]/hr, [schedule]. About [number] prescriptions a day with [number] technicians on every shift. [State] license required, or we will support your licensure transfer. Apply in two minutes, no CV needed yet."

Headlines to test:

  • Pharmacists: [number] techs every shift, and you're never alone
  • Hospital pharmacist, [schedule], no retail queue
  • Moving to [State]? We'll help transfer your license

Only publish what is true for your pharmacy and fill in real numbers before the ad runs. Employment ads on Meta run in the Employment special ad category, so there is no targeting by age, gender or ZIP code and the minimum radius is 15 miles. The ad copy has to name the audience.

Screening questions for a pharmacist application

A pharmacist will not fill out a long form for a job they have not decided to want. Ask four questions, then talk:

  • Do you hold an active pharmacist license in this state, or in another state? (A knockout only if you will not wait for a transfer.)
  • Which settings have you worked in: retail, hospital, long-term care, specialty, other?
  • Which schedule are you looking for: full-time, part-time, per diem?
  • When could you start?

License verification, references and the CV come after the first conversation. Our guide to pre-screening questions covers what to keep off the form.

Hire the pharmacist and the technicians together

Pharmacists weigh the team they will work with as much as the pay. A pharmacy with vacant technician shifts will struggle to hire pharmacists, because every candidate asks about technician support. Recruiting both at once, with the same message about staffing, is usually faster than filling one after the other. See our guide on how to hire pharmacy technicians and the pharmacy technician job description for that side.

Speed and follow-up

Pharmacists who apply are often comparing two or three offers. Reply the same day, ideally within minutes, with a named contact and two times to talk. Boostpoint Connect, an add-on to Boostpoint Attract, sends an instant text when someone applies, runs automated text sequences you set up for each job, and gives your team a shared two-way inbox. Your team books the call in the thread.

For a pharmacy chain or health system with openings across many locations, Boostpoint Programmatic 2.0 turns your XML job feed into one Meta ad per job, collects screening answers in a quick-apply form on Facebook or Instagram, and sends contact details, answers and a resume-formatted candidate summary to the individual job in your ATS.

What it costs to recruit pharmacists on social

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark does not report pharmacists as their own role family, and none of the published families contains the role. The fair comparison is the Healthcare & Senior Living sector: a median of $15.42 per applicant, middle half $7.89 to $39.61, blended $11.47, and a 16% apply rate. A licensed, degree-level role may sit toward the upper part of that range; the benchmark found that sectors hiring credentialed people cost more. These are costs advertisers paid, for advertising only, and cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

The biggest lever is the form. The apply experience explains 70% of cost variation between campaigns; campaigns converting under 5% of clickers paid $53.77 per applicant, and those converting 10-20% paid $11.11. See the full data on our benchmarks page.

Keeping the pharmacist you hired

The promises in the ad are the ones the new hire will check in the first month: technician coverage, the schedule, and whether they work alone. Put them in the offer letter and keep them. A pharmacist who finds the staffing was overstated is back on the market quickly, and the next ad they answer will be a competitor's.

Frequently asked questions

How do you hire pharmacists?

Recruit licensed pharmacists who are currently employed, lead the ad with pay, schedule and staffing, say whether you support licensure transfer, keep the first application to a few questions, and reply the same day. Pharmacy schools, state associations and social ads are the main channels.

How do you recruit pharmacists?

Reach them where they are: employed at other pharmacies, rotating through as students, active in state associations, or planning a move. Facebook and Instagram ads reach passive pharmacists in your market, and relationships with nearby colleges of pharmacy build the student pipeline.

Should we use a staffing agency to hire pharmacists?

Agencies and per diem pharmacists can cover shifts while you recruit, but a permanent hire usually comes from direct recruiting: an ad that states pay, schedule and staffing, reaches pharmacists in your market, and gets a same-day reply.

What license does a pharmacist need?

A license from the state board of pharmacy where they will practice. Boards use the NAPLEX as one component of licensure; it is typically taken by recent college of pharmacy graduates, and many jurisdictions also require a law exam, the MPJE or UMPJE.

Can I hire a pharmacist licensed in another state?

Yes, if they obtain a license in your state. NABP's Electronic Licensure Transfer Program lets a pharmacist with a current, active, unrestricted license transfer it to other states. The receiving board makes the decision and some states require a law exam first, so allow time.

What should a pharmacist job ad include?

Pay, schedule, the setting, prescriptions per day, technicians and pharmacists on each shift, whether the pharmacist ever works alone, clinical services such as immunizations where applicable, and what you offer toward licensure transfer or continuing education.

How many pharmacists are there in the US?

BLS Employment Projections 2025-35 count 325,200 pharmacists in 2025, projected to reach 342,300 by 2035, with about 12,500 openings a year. The BLS May 2025 median annual wage was $140,910.

How much does it cost to recruit pharmacists on Facebook?

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark does not report pharmacists as a role family. The Healthcare & Senior Living sector had a median of $15.42 per applicant, with the middle half of campaigns between $7.89 and $39.61. These are advertising costs only, not cost per hire.
