How to Hire Pharmacy Technicians: Hire Trainees, Pay for the Credential

To hire pharmacy technicians, check what your state board of pharmacy actually requires and require nothing more. Then advertise the pay rate, the shift and the staffing (scripts a day, technicians and pharmacists on shift), recruit trainees and career changers as well as certified technicians, offer to pay for certification where your state allows trainees, keep the mobile application to four questions, and text each applicant within minutes.

Who you are actually hiring

BLS Employment Projections 2025-35 count 471,200 pharmacy technicians in 2025, projected to reach 501,300 by 2035 (growth of 6.4%), with about 44,700 openings a year. The BLS, May 2025 median annual wage was $45,750. BLS lists a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry-level education, with moderate-term on-the-job training.

That last point is the one that matters for recruiting. Technicians are an entry-level role that people learn on the job, which means the pool is not only certified technicians. It is anyone reliable and accurate who could become one: cashiers, retail and customer service workers, and people leaving other healthcare support roles.

Keep the technician and the pharmacy assistant separate. BLS counts pharmacy aides as a different occupation (39,200 in 2025, BLS May 2025 median annual wage $37,680), and state rules on what each can do differ. Our pharmacy technician job description covers the difference in detail.

State registration and national certification

Technician requirements are set by each state's board of pharmacy and vary by state. In Texas, for example, anyone performing the duties of a pharmacy technician or pharmacy technician trainee must hold an active registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. Check your own board's rule before you copy requirements from another state's posting.

The two national credentials are:

  • PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). Candidates qualify through a PTCB-recognized education or training program, or at least 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technician, and must pass the PTCE. PTCB requires CPhTs to renew every two years.
  • NHA Certified Pharmacy Technician. Candidates need a high school diploma or equivalent plus either a pharmacy technician training program completed within the last five years, or one year of work experience with at least 1,200 hours of supervised pharmacy-related work within the last three years.

Both routes include a work-experience pathway. If your state lets trainees work while they qualify, you can hire for reliability and pay for the exam, rather than competing for the certified technicians every other pharmacy is also trying to hire.

Where to find pharmacy technicians

  • Retail and customer service workers who want a healthcare job without going back to school for years. The register, accuracy and a queue of customers are skills they already have.
  • Your own front-end staff and pharmacy assistants, if your state lets them train into the technician role.
  • Pharmacy technician programs at community colleges and vocational schools. Offer externships and hire graduates before they finish.
  • Certified technicians at other pharmacies, especially where your staffing or schedule is better. Say so in the ad.
  • Other healthcare support workers, such as medical assistants and CNAs, who want a role without direct patient care.
  • Pre-pharmacy students who want paid pharmacy experience.

Job boards reach the technicians who are actively searching. Facebook and Instagram reach everyone else, including the career changers who would never type "pharmacy technician jobs" into a search box. Employment ads on Meta run in the Employment special ad category: no targeting by age, gender or ZIP code, and at least a 15-mile radius, so the headline has to say who the job is for.

How to recruit pharmacy technicians: what the ad must say

A technician checks three things first: the hourly rate, the schedule, and whether certification is required or paid for. The fourth, which experienced technicians always ask, is staffing: how many prescriptions a day and how many technicians and pharmacists are on each shift. Put the setting in the title too: retail, hospital, IV room, long-term care or mail order are different jobs.

Sample ad: "Pharmacy Technicians, [Pharmacy], [City]. $[rate]/hr, [schedule]. About [number] prescriptions a day with [number] technicians on shift. Certification not required: we train you and pay for your exam. Apply in two minutes."

Headlines to test:

  • Pharmacy technician trainees: we pay for your certification
  • Ready to leave the register? Train as a pharmacy technician
  • Certified techs: [number] techs every shift, weekends rotate

Only publish lines that are true for your pharmacy and your state's rules, and fill in real numbers before the ad runs.

Screening questions for a pharmacy technician application

Four questions are enough on a mobile form. Only the first can be a knockout, and only where your state requires it at hire:

  • Are you registered, licensed or certified as a pharmacy technician in this state, or willing to become registered?
  • Which pharmacy settings have you worked in, if any: retail, hospital, long-term care, none yet?
  • Which shifts could you work?
  • When could you start?

Software experience, references and background checks can come after the first conversation. See our guide to pre-screening questions, and our pharmacy technician interview questions for the interview itself.

How to recruit for a pharmacy

Recruiting for a pharmacy means filling two roles that depend on each other. Technicians ask about pharmacist coverage and pharmacists ask about technician support, so a pharmacy short on one struggles to hire the other. Run both searches at once, with one consistent message about staffing, schedule and training. Our guide on how to hire pharmacists covers the pharmacist side, including licensure transfer from other states.

Three habits separate pharmacies that stay staffed. They publish the staffing numbers in every ad. They build a trainee track so they are not competing only for certified technicians. And they reply to applicants the same day, because a technician who applies on a break has usually applied somewhere else by the end of the shift.

Speed and follow-up

Text within minutes, offer interview times in the first message, and follow up the next day if there is no answer. Boostpoint Connect, an add-on to Boostpoint Attract, sends an instant text when someone applies, runs automated text sequences you set up for each job, and gives your team a shared two-way inbox. Your team books the interview in the thread.

Pharmacy chains and health systems with many openings can use Boostpoint Programmatic 2.0: your XML job feed becomes one Meta ad per job, candidates answer screening questions in a quick-apply form on Facebook or Instagram, and contact details, answers and a resume-formatted candidate summary go to the individual job in your ATS. Ads start and stop with the feed.

What it costs to recruit pharmacy technicians on social

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark does not have a pharmacy technician role family, so the fair comparison is the Healthcare & Senior Living sector: a median of $15.42 per applicant, middle half $7.89 to $39.61, blended $11.47, and a 16% apply rate. These are costs advertisers paid, for advertising only, and cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

The apply experience explains 70% of cost variation between campaigns. Campaigns converting under 5% of clickers paid $53.77 per applicant; those converting 20-35% paid $4.41. Requiring certification and a resume at the application pushes a technician campaign toward the expensive end. See our benchmarks page for the full data.

Frequently asked questions

How do you hire pharmacy technicians?

Check your state board of pharmacy's requirements, require nothing beyond them, advertise pay, schedule and staffing, recruit trainees and career changers as well as certified technicians, keep the application to four questions, and text applicants within minutes.

Where can I find pharmacy technicians?

Certified technicians at other pharmacies, graduates of local technician programs, your own front-end staff, retail and customer service workers, other healthcare support workers and pre-pharmacy students. Social ads reach the career changers who are not searching job boards.

How do you recruit pharmacy technicians?

Lead the ad with the hourly rate, schedule and whether you pay for certification, and publish script volume and staffing per shift. Build a trainee track where your state allows it, so you are not competing only for certified technicians.

How do you recruit for a pharmacy?

Recruit technicians and pharmacists together with one consistent message about staffing, schedule and training, because each asks about the other before accepting. Publish staffing numbers, offer a trainee track, and reply the same day.

Do pharmacy technicians need to be certified?

It depends on the state. Requirements are set by each state's board of pharmacy. National certification is available from PTCB (CPhT) and from NHA, and both offer a work-experience pathway, so many employers hire trainees where the state allows and pay for the exam.

What are the requirements for PTCB certification?

PTCB requires completion of a PTCB-recognized education or training program, or at least 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technician, plus a passing score on the PTCE. Certified technicians renew every two years. See PTCB for current details.

What screening questions should a pharmacy technician application ask?

Whether the applicant is registered, licensed or certified in your state or willing to become registered, which pharmacy settings they have worked in, which shifts they can work, and when they can start.

How much does it cost to recruit pharmacy technicians on Facebook?

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark has no pharmacy technician family. The Healthcare & Senior Living sector had a median of $15.42 per applicant, with the middle half of campaigns between $7.89 and $39.61. Figures are advertising only and are not cost per hire.

What is the pharmacy technician hiring process?

Start with your state board of pharmacy's rule, because it decides who you can hire. Then run an ad with the rate, schedule, staffing and whether you pay for certification; take applications on a four-question mobile form; text within minutes and phone screen the same day; interview, ideally with the pharmacist in charge; and make a conditional offer. Before the new hire performs technician duties, confirm the registration, license or certification your state requires, or start the trainee registration where your state allows trainees, as Texas does. Background checks and software training follow. The pharmacy technician interview questions cover the interview step.

How long does it take to hire a pharmacy technician?

For a technician who already holds your state's credential, the time is mostly your own: how quickly you reply, schedule the interview and make the offer, plus the background check. For a trainee, add the time your state board takes to process a registration where one is required before the person can perform technician duties, which varies by state. Certification through PTCB or NHA can happen after hire where your state allows trainees to work, so it need not delay the start. Boostpoint does not publish a time-to-hire figure; the fastest pharmacies reply the same day, because a technician who applies on a break has usually applied elsewhere by the end of the shift.
