How to Hire RBTs: Recruiting Registered Behavior Technicians for an ABA Practice
To hire RBTs, decide first whether you will hire certified RBTs, trainees you certify, or both, then recruit from the people who already work with children: psychology and education students, paraprofessionals, childcare and after-school staff. State the hourly pay, guaranteed hours, whether drive time is paid and that you pay for the 40-hour training. Keep the mobile application short, verify certified candidates on the BACB Certificant Registry, and text every applicant within minutes.
Who you are actually hiring
The BACB describes the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) credential as "a paraprofessional certification in behavior analysis." RBTs deliver ABA sessions following the treatment plan a supervisor writes, and they "practice under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor and/or an RBT Requirements Coordinator." The job is one-to-one work with a client, often a child, in a clinic, a home, a school or the community.
The pool is large. BACB certificant data reports 260,174 RBT certificants as of July 1, 2026, alongside 85,587 BCBAs. BLS does not publish a separate occupation for RBTs, so there are no federal employment or wage figures for this exact role. Pay rates you see quoted come from job postings, not from BLS.
What the RBT credential requires
From the BACB RBT Handbook (updated June 2026), a candidate must:
- be at least 18 years old when submitting the certification application, and have completed high school or the equivalent;
- pass a criminal background check and an abuse registry check completed no more than 180 days before paying for the application;
- complete the 40-hour training in no less than 5 days and no more than 180 days (employers, universities or online providers may offer it);
- complete the Initial Competency Assessment no more than 90 days before submitting the application;
- pass the RBT exam: 75 scored and 10 unscored multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes.
After certification, the handbook requires ongoing supervision for "a minimum of 5% of the hours you spend providing behavior-analytic services each calendar month," with at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts a month and direct observation in at least one. An RBT with no active supervisor on record is inactive and cannot practice. The BACB is also moving RBTs from annual recertification to a two-year cycle starting in 2027; check the handbook for how the transition applies to each technician.
Certified RBTs, trainees, or both
This is the decision that shapes the whole recruiting plan. Certified RBTs can start sooner but are the smaller, more contested pool. Trainees are far easier to find, but you carry the 40-hour training, the competency assessment and the exam wait, and you need a BCBA with time to supervise them. Check what your state and your payer contracts allow an uncertified technician to do and bill in the meantime.
Most practices that grow steadily do both, and say so in one ad: "Certified RBTs welcome. No certification? We pay for your training." That single line widens the audience more than any other change to the posting.
Where to find RBTs
- Psychology, education and social work students. Undergraduates want flexible hours that fit classes, and graduate students on a BCBA track need supervised experience. Build relationships with local programs and advertise the path from RBT to BCBA if you support it.
- Paraprofessionals and teacher aides. They already work with children with support needs, often in the same schools your clients attend, and some want more hours or better pay.
- Childcare, after-school and camp staff. Comfortable with children, used to split or afternoon schedules, and often paid less than an RBT role.
- Direct support professionals. DSPs bring behavior support experience from adult services. Our DSP job description shows how close the roles are.
- Your current RBTs. Referrals from technicians who like their supervisor are the best-retained hires most practices get.
- Local social ads. Facebook and Instagram reach people who have never searched "RBT jobs" but fit the profile above. Employment ads run in Meta's Employment special ad category: location targeting needs at least a 15-mile radius and you cannot target by age or gender, so the ad copy has to do the selecting.
- Job boards. Certified RBTs who are actively looking do use them. Expect them to be applying to several providers at once.
How to recruit RBTs: what the job ad must say
RBT candidates compare offers on a few concrete things. Answer them in the first lines:
- Hourly pay, and what is paid. Is drive time between in-home sessions paid? Is mileage reimbursed? What happens to pay when a client cancels?
- Guaranteed hours. Cancellations are the main reason RBT income is unpredictable. If you guarantee a minimum, lead with it.
- Schedule and setting. Clinic, in-home or school, and which hours. If your caseload is mostly after school, say "afternoons and early evenings" plainly.
- Training and certification. Whether you pay for the 40-hour training, the competency assessment and the exam fee, and whether training hours are paid.
- Supervision. How often a BCBA is on site with them. Good supervision is a recruiting advantage; say it concretely.
Sample RBT ad headlines: "Behavior Technician: we pay for your RBT training, and for the hours you train." "Certified RBTs: clinic-based, guaranteed weekly hours, no driving between homes." "Psychology students: afternoon ABA hours that fit your classes." Use only the lines that are true for your practice.
Screening questions for a mobile RBT application
Knock out only what the credential or the job genuinely requires:
- "Are you 18 or older?" (a BACB eligibility requirement)
- "Do you have a high school diploma or equivalent?" (also required)
- "Are you a certified RBT, or willing to complete the 40-hour training we provide?"
- For in-home roles only: "Do you have reliable transportation to clients' homes?"
Add non-knockout questions for availability (afternoons, mornings, weekends) and the best time to call. Leave background questions off the application and run the checks the BACB and your state require at the point in your process that the law allows. Verify certified candidates on the BACB Certificant Registry before the interview.
Speed and follow-up
Many RBT applicants are students or hourly workers applying from a phone, and they will take the first reasonable offer. Text within minutes of the application, offer an interview slot within a day or two, and keep the interview practical. Our RBT interview questions page covers the scope, data-honesty and de-escalation questions that separate strong candidates. Our recruiting text message templates cover the first message.
What recruiting RBTs costs on social
The Behavioral health / DSP family in Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark had a median of $55.55 per applicant, a blended cost of $36.39 and a 9% apply rate. Its middle 50% ran from $18.36 to $334.56, the widest band in the study. A band that wide means execution, not the role, decides most of the cost: across the benchmark, the apply experience explained 70% of the variation between campaigns. Campaigns with apply rates in the 10-20% band averaged $11.11 per applicant, against $23.13 in the 5-10% band. Costs are what advertisers paid; cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
Keeping RBTs past the first 90 days
Early RBT turnover usually comes from three things the ad glossed over: unpredictable hours after cancellations, unpaid drive time, and thin supervision in the first weeks. Pair every new technician with a BCBA who observes them early, schedule the first month's hours before they start, and ask at 30 and 60 days whether the job matches what was advertised. Plan RBT recruiting as an ongoing pipeline, not a one-off requisition, because caseload growth depends on it. Frequently asked questions
How do you hire RBTs?
Decide whether you hire certified RBTs, trainees you certify, or both. Recruit from psychology and education students, paraprofessionals and childcare staff, state pay, guaranteed hours and paid training in the ad, keep the mobile application short, and text every applicant within minutes. Verify certified candidates on the BACB Certificant Registry.
Where can I find RBTs to hire?
Psychology, education and social work programs, school paraprofessionals, childcare and after-school staff, direct support professionals, referrals from your current technicians, local Facebook and Instagram ads, and job boards for certified RBTs who are actively looking.
What are the requirements to become an RBT?
Under the BACB RBT Handbook, a candidate must be at least 18 when applying, have completed high school or the equivalent, pass criminal background and abuse registry checks within 180 days before paying for the application, complete the 40-hour training, complete the Initial Competency Assessment and pass the RBT exam.
Can I hire someone who is not yet a certified RBT?
Yes. Many practices hire trainees and put them through the 40-hour training and competency assessment. Check what your state and payer contracts allow an uncertified technician to do and bill until they are certified, and say clearly in the ad that you pay for training.
How much supervision does an RBT need?
The BACB RBT Handbook requires ongoing supervision for a minimum of 5% of the hours an RBT spends providing behavior-analytic services each calendar month, with at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts a month and direct observation in at least one.
How many RBTs are there?
BACB certificant data reports 260,174 RBT certificants as of July 1, 2026. BLS does not publish a separate occupation for RBTs.
What does an RBT applicant cost on social media?
In Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, the Behavioral health / DSP family had a median of $55.55 per applicant, a blended cost of $36.39 and a middle 50% from $18.36 to $334.56. The width of that band shows how much the ad and application design move the cost. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
What should an RBT job ad include?
Hourly pay, whether drive time and cancellations are paid, guaranteed hours, setting and schedule, whether you pay for the 40-hour training and exam, and how often a BCBA supervises on site.
