Night Auditor Job Description: Duties, Responsibilities, Template & Pay (2026)

A night auditor runs a hotel alone from about eleven at night until seven in the morning: front desk, security, guest service, and the daily financial close that reconciles the property's books before morning. It is two jobs in one shift, usually with nobody else in the building. This page has a night auditor job description template you can copy, what the role pays, and the honest way to advertise a position most people would not take.

Two jobs, one shift, one person

Most night auditor postings describe a front desk job and then mention the audit. That is backwards, and it is why the role is filled by people who quit in month two.

The front desk half. Late arrivals and walk-ins, checkouts before dawn, lockouts, wake-up calls, guest complaints at two in the morning, the shuttle, the airport crew that checks in at 1am, and being the entire customer experience for anybody awake.

The audit half. Posting room and tax charges, reconciling the day's revenue against the point-of-sale outlets, balancing credit card settlements against the property management system, resolving discrepancies, running the night audit close, and producing the manager's morning reports.

The part nobody lists. The auditor is usually the only employee in the building. That makes them responsible for security rounds, the alarm panel, the guest who cannot be woken, the medical call, the fire panel, and the decision about whether to call the police. Some properties add breakfast setup, laundry and lobby cleaning on top.

A posting that names all three halves honestly will get fewer applications and a much better hire, because the people who apply will be the ones who actually want a night alone with a spreadsheet and a lobby.

Requirements: what is required, what is preferred, and what costs you applicants

The constraint on this role is not skill, it is the hours. Roughly 43,600 desk clerk openings a year exist, and the overnight ones are the hardest to fill in the whole category. Everything in the posting should be aimed at the small group of people for whom an overnight shift is a feature rather than a sacrifice.

RequirementWhat to know
Accounting experienceAlmost never necessary and frequently listed. The audit is a defined nightly procedure in the property management system, not bookkeeping. Requiring accounting experience shrinks an already small pool for no gain; ask for comfort with numbers and a willingness to chase a discrepancy.
Hotel experienceA preference. Training a careful person on the PMS takes a couple of weeks of day shifts. If you will train, say so in the first line.
Overnight availabilityThe actual requirement. Say the exact hours, how many nights, and whether it is the same nights every week — consistency matters more to overnight workers than to almost anyone else, because their sleep depends on it.
Working aloneState it plainly rather than letting it be discovered. Some candidates want exactly this — students, writers, people who study, people who dislike supervision — and they are your best applicants. Hiding it recruits the wrong people.
Security responsibilitiesName them, and name the escalation procedure. A candidate deciding whether to spend nights alone in a building wants to know you have thought about their safety. A posting that addresses it is unusual and persuasive.
Physical and additional dutiesIf the auditor sets up breakfast, runs laundry or cleans the lobby, say so. These are the most commonly omitted duties in night audit postings and the most common cause of an early resignation.
Minimum ageCheck your state for front desk and alcohol-adjacent duties rather than copying a number.
The single most effective thing a night audit posting can do is describe the night honestly: "Typically three or four late arrivals, then the audit takes about ninety minutes, and the rest of the shift is quiet." For the right candidate that is the job advertisement. For the wrong one it is a filter. Both outcomes are wins.

Night auditor duties, written for a posting

Describe the property and the night. Room count, brand or type, occupancy, how many late arrivals on a typical night, whether there is a bar or restaurant to reconcile, which PMS, and whether anybody else is on property. Those facts tell a candidate what eight hours will actually feel like.

Say how long the audit takes and when it runs. It is the part of the job people are most uncertain about, and "the audit takes about ninety minutes and runs at 2am" removes the mystery entirely.

Keep the list to nine or ten lines, order it by how much of the shift each takes, and put the security rounds, the emergency procedure and any breakfast or laundry duties in the list rather than in the interview.

How to customize it by property

Select and limited service

Smaller property, fewer outlets to reconcile, a quieter night and usually breakfast setup on the auditor. Say the room count and the breakfast expectation. The quiet is genuinely attractive to the right candidate — students and people with a second occupation — so describe it rather than apologising for it.

Full service

More outlets, more complex reconciliation, banquet and group billing, more late arrivals and usually a second overnight employee. Say whether there is security or a bellman on overnight, because being genuinely alone versus having one colleague is a materially different job.

Resorts and casino properties

High volume overnight, multiple revenue centres, and a much busier lobby. Say the volume plainly; this version of the role suits a different person entirely and pretending it is quiet will cost you the hire.

Extended stay

Long-stay guests, fewer arrivals, more relationship with regulars, and often additional property duties. Say the occupancy mix and the additional duties.

Multi-property and small ownership groups

If one auditor covers two properties or the role includes remote support for a sister hotel, say so and say how the travel or coverage works. It is a common arrangement and almost never disclosed in the posting.

What it costs to reach night auditors on social

The audience is cheap to reach and hard to convert, which is the opposite of most hard-to-fill roles. In our 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark the retail and corporate sector — 181 campaigns, the closest match for hourly customer-facing work — ran a median cost per applicant of $8.58, a volume-blended figure of $3.66 and a 26% apply rate, the highest of any sector we run. Across all 891 campaigns the median was $13.88.

The problem with a night audit campaign is never the impression cost; it is that the shift disqualifies most of the audience before they read the second line. Two responses work. Put the hours in the headline so the click is qualified — you would rather pay for fifty clicks from people who want overnight work than five hundred from people who do not. And target the reason somebody wants a night shift: the differential, the quiet, the ability to study, the daytime freedom. Across the benchmark, campaigns converting over 20% of clicks paid a median $4.41 an applicant and those under 10% paid $53.77 — and for this role the apply rate is decided almost entirely by how honestly the shift is described.

Writing the ad version

The description is the document. The advertisement has an unusual job here: it needs to disqualify most readers in the first line. Lead with "overnight, 11pm to 7am, the same nights every week" and the differential, then the quiet, then the training. Our campaign data puts the best-converting length at 201–400 words, and for this role shorter and blunter is better.

Three questions on the form: can you work overnight consistently, have you worked alone on a shift before, and when can you start.

What night auditors earn

BLS has no separate night auditor wage; the role sits within hotel, motel and resort desk clerks, which had a median of $16.86 an hour, $35,070 a year in 2025 across 264,200 positions, with about 43,600 openings a year and 3–4% projected growth.

In practice night auditors are usually paid above the desk clerk median, because the shift carries a differential and the role carries the audit. That differential is the whole negotiation, and it belongs in the advertisement as a number rather than as "shift differential available".

For comparison against the jobs you are competing with for the same person: dishwashing runs $16.73, counter work $15.00, janitorial $17.71 and stocking $17.95. A night auditor role at the desk clerk median with a dollar differential lands around $17.86 — competitive, but only if you say so. What actually distinguishes the job is not the rate; it is that the work is indoors, seated for much of the night, quiet, and leaves the daytime free. Those are the terms on which this role wins, and they are almost never the terms on which it is advertised.

Frequently asked questions

What does a night auditor do?

A night auditor covers the hotel front desk overnight and completes the property's daily financial close. That means checking in late arrivals, handling guest requests and emergencies, posting room and tax charges, reconciling revenue across the hotel's outlets, balancing credit card settlements and cash, running the night audit in the property management system, producing the morning reports, and completing security rounds — usually as the only employee on property.

What qualifications does a night auditor need?

Usually a high school diploma or equivalent — O*NET reports 75% of employers requiring one for hotel desk clerks. Accounting qualifications are rarely necessary, because the audit is a defined nightly procedure within the property management system. What matters is accuracy with numbers, composure with guests at any hour, and the ability to work alone overnight consistently.

How much do night auditors make?

There is no separate BLS figure; hotel, motel and resort desk clerks had a median of $16.86 an hour, or $35,070 a year, in 2025. Night auditors typically earn above that because of the overnight differential and the added audit responsibility — and that differential should be stated as a number in the posting, since it is the main thing candidates are weighing.

Is night auditor a hard job?

It is demanding in an unusual way. The tasks themselves are learnable in a couple of weeks, but the shift means sleeping during the day, working alone, and being the only person responsible if something goes wrong at 3am. For people who want quiet, autonomy and free daytime it suits very well; for most people it does not, which is why honest advertising matters more here than in almost any other hourly role.

Do you need accounting experience to be a night auditor?

Almost never. The night audit is a structured process in the property management system rather than bookkeeping: post charges, reconcile outlets, balance settlements, resolve discrepancies, roll the date and print reports. Requiring accounting experience shrinks an already small pool without improving the hire.

What should a night auditor job description include?

The room count and property type, occupancy and how many late arrivals on a typical night, which outlets need reconciling, the property management system, how long the audit takes and when it runs, whether the auditor is alone on property, the security and emergency procedures, any additional duties such as breakfast setup or laundry, the exact shift and nights, and the hourly rate with the overnight differential stated.

Is a night auditor responsible for security?

In most hotels, yes, in practice — because they are the only employee in the building. That typically covers security rounds, the alarm and fire panels, handling disturbances, and deciding when to call emergency services. A posting should name those responsibilities and the escalation procedure, both because it is honest and because candidates weighing an overnight job want evidence the employer has considered their safety.

Why is it hard to hire night auditors?

Because the shift disqualifies most of the labour market before the duties matter. The audience is cheap to reach — hourly campaigns run a $8.58 median cost per applicant in our data — but the conversion depends entirely on finding the minority of people who actively want overnight work. The postings that fill are the ones that put the hours in the first line, state the differential as a number, and describe the night honestly rather than dressing it up.
