Recruitment advertising for frontline employers

Night audit is a shift problem before it is a skills problem. Boostpoint runs Facebook and Instagram job ads that put the hours in the first line, so the people who click are the ones who want the night.

How to Recruit Night Auditors: Hire for the Shift, Train the Audit

To recruit night auditors, advertise the shift before the job: the exact overnight hours, the same nights every week and the overnight differential as a dollar figure. Then say whether the auditor works alone and that you train the audit on day shifts. Look for people who want daytime free (students, second-job holders, current overnight workers), ask three mobile questions about availability, working alone and start date, and text every applicant within minutes.

Who you are actually hiring

A night auditor covers the front desk overnight and closes the hotel's books for the day: posting room and tax charges, reconciling revenue, balancing card settlements and cash, running the audit in the property management system and producing the morning reports. At many select-service properties they are the only employee on site, so they also handle late arrivals, alarms and anything else that happens between 11pm and 7am.

BLS does not count night auditors separately. The closest occupation is hotel, motel and resort desk clerks (SOC 43-4081), which BLS Employment Projections 2025-35 puts at 264,600 jobs in 2025 and 269,500 in 2035, growth of 1.8%, with about 35,500 openings a year. The May 2025 median annual wage for the whole group was $35,070, and the typical entry requirement is a high school diploma with short-term on-the-job training. Those figures cover day and evening desk clerks too; the overnight subset is smaller and harder to fill.

That is the core of the recruiting problem. The skill is teachable in a couple of weeks of day shifts. The hours are not negotiable, and most of the people who see your ad will rule themselves out on the shift alone.

Where to find night auditors

Recruit the people for whom an overnight shift is a feature rather than a sacrifice. They exist in every market, but they rarely search for the words "night auditor".

  • Students and people studying for something. A quiet desk after the audit is done is study time. Community colleges and hospitality programs near your property are worth a flyer and a post on their job boards.
  • Second-job holders. Someone with a day job or a business that runs in the daytime can fit a part-time overnight schedule, especially two or three fixed nights.
  • Current overnight workers. Overnight security officers, overnight stockers, hospital night staff and call center night agents are already adjusted to the hours. Many would move to a seated, indoor, quieter night for a similar rate.
  • Your own day staff. A front desk agent who already knows the PMS is the fastest hire you will make. Ask before you advertise, and offer the differential.
  • Sister properties and referrals. Night auditors know other night auditors. A referral bonus paid after 90 days is cheap next to an open overnight shift covered by a manager.
  • Facebook and Instagram. Social ads reach people who are not job hunting that week but would switch for the right night. They work when the headline names the hours, so the click is already qualified.

Job boards produce volume for this role but a lot of it is day-shift candidates applying to everything. If you use them, put the hours in the job title.

What to pay night auditors

The pay line is where most night audit postings lose people. Our night auditor job description has the full wage section, including how the role compares with the jobs your candidates are also considering. Two rules matter more than the exact rate. First, state the overnight differential as a number, not "shift differential available". Second, state whether the rate includes it. A candidate comparing your ad with an overnight stocking job will do the math, and an ad that makes them guess loses.

How to write a night auditor job ad

The ad has an unusual job: it should disqualify most readers in the first line and make the right ones stop scrolling. Put these in the first two lines:

  • The exact hours and nights, and whether they are the same every week (sleep depends on it)
  • The hourly pay and the differential, as numbers
  • Whether the auditor is alone on property, and what the escalation plan is
  • That you train the audit and the PMS on day shifts first
  • Any extra duties such as breakfast setup or laundry, so nobody quits over them in week two

Sample headlines to test against each other:

"Night Auditor, 11pm to 7am, same 4 nights every week. Quiet 90-room hotel. We train you on days first."

"Get paid to be the calm one at 3am. Night audit, overnight differential, no hotel experience needed."

"Want your days free? Overnight front desk and audit, fixed schedule, paid training."

More on structure is in what makes a good job ad. On Facebook and Instagram, employment ads run in Meta's Employment special ad category, so you cannot target by age, gender or ZIP code and the location radius must be at least 15 miles. The words in the ad do the targeting.

Screening questions for night auditors

Keep the mobile application to what decides the hire. Knock out only on things the job truly requires.

  • Can you work 11pm to 7am on our four set nights every week? Use your own hours. Yes or no. This is the real requirement.
  • Are you comfortable being the only employee on site overnight? Yes, no, or "I would like to talk about it".
  • Have you handled cash, card settlements or a front desk before? Multiple choice, not a knockout, because you train it.
  • When could you start?

Leave out resume upload and accounting experience. The audit is a defined nightly procedure in the PMS, not bookkeeping, and requiring accounting shrinks a small pool for no gain. For what is and is not safe to ask, see pre-screening questions.

Speed: the best way to recruit night auditors is to answer first

Overnight candidates are often awake when your managers are not. Text every applicant within minutes of applying, confirm the hours in that first message, and offer to let them sit in on part of a night shift before they commit. A candidate who has seen the lobby at 2am and still says yes is unlikely to quit in the first month. Text recruiting makes this possible without someone watching an inbox at midnight.

What it costs to recruit night auditors on social

Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark (891 Boostpoint-managed campaigns on Meta) has no night audit or hotel front desk role family, so we do not publish a night auditor figure. Across all campaigns the median cost per applicant was $13.88, with the middle half between $6.48 and $29.74. Figures are advertising cost only, and cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

The more useful number for this role is the apply rate. Campaigns where 20% to 35% of clicks became applications paid $4.41 per applicant; campaigns under 5% paid $53.77. The apply experience explained 70% of the cost variation between campaigns. For night audit, the apply rate depends mostly on how honestly the shift is described before the click. See the full benchmark.

The first 90 days

Early night audit quits usually trace back to three things: the schedule moving, being alone without a plan, and duties nobody mentioned. Keep the nights fixed, give the new auditor a written escalation list with names and numbers, and keep them on shadow shifts until they have run the audit cleanly more than once. For interview questions, use our front desk interview questions, and for the wider hotel team see hospitality recruiting.

Frequently asked questions

How do you recruit night auditors?

Advertise the shift first: exact overnight hours, fixed nights and the differential as a number. Say whether the auditor works alone and that you train the audit on day shifts. Reach people who want daytime free, such as students, second-job holders and current overnight workers, keep the application to three or four questions, and text applicants within minutes.

Where can I find night auditors?

Look for people already living on an overnight schedule or who want their days free: students, second-job holders, overnight security and stocking staff, your own day front desk agents, and referrals from current night staff. Facebook and Instagram ads reach them when the headline names the hours.

What should I pay a night auditor?

BLS has no separate night auditor figure. The closest occupation, hotel, motel and resort desk clerks, had a BLS, May 2025 median annual wage of $35,070. Night auditors usually earn a differential on top of the desk rate. Our night auditor job description covers pay in detail. State the differential as a dollar figure in the ad.

Does a night auditor need accounting experience?

Usually not. The night audit is a defined nightly procedure in the property management system. Comfort with numbers and willingness to chase a discrepancy matter more. Requiring accounting experience shrinks an already small applicant pool.

What screening questions should a night auditor application ask?

Ask whether the candidate can work your specific overnight hours every week, whether they are comfortable being the only employee on site, whether they have handled cash or a front desk before (not a knockout), and when they can start. Skip resume upload.

How much does it cost to get a night auditor applicant?

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark has no night auditor role family. Across 891 campaigns the median cost per applicant was $13.88, and campaigns with apply rates between 20% and 35% paid $4.41. The honesty of the shift description before the click drives the apply rate for this role. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

Why do night auditors quit early?

Common reasons are schedules that change week to week, being alone without a clear escalation plan, and extra duties such as breakfast setup or laundry that were not in the posting. Fixed nights, a written escalation list and an honest ad prevent most of them.
