Free Job Posting Sites for Employers: What Is Actually Free in 2026
The free job posting sites that still work for US employers are Indeed (up to three free jobs per calendar month, each live up to 30 days), LinkedIn (one free job at a time, paused after 14 days), Google's job search through job pages on your own careers site, your state job bank, Facebook Local Jobs in Marketplace, and Handshake for early-career roles. Craigslist is not free for US job posts. Every free option waits for active job seekers, so run them all and judge them on applicants per week.
Free job posting sites at a glance
"Free" means three things on job sites: free for good (state job banks, Google), free up to a limit (Indeed, LinkedIn), or a free trial of a paid product (ZipRecruiter, Workable). Every limit below is quoted from the site's own pages.
| Site | What is free | The limit, in the site's terms | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indeed | Job posts from employers posting directly | Up to three free jobs per calendar month, each live up to 30 days; does not apply to staffing agencies | Any role people search for by title |
| One job post at a time | Paused after 14 days; hidden from search after a free applicant limit that "typically ranges from 10 to 30" | Salaried, office and supervisory roles | |
| Google job search | Eligibility for Google's job results | Needs JobPosting structured data on your own job pages, or a third-party job site that integrates with Google | Every employer with a careers page |
| State job bank | Posting to your state's public job bank | Registration, validation and posting times vary by state | Local hourly roles, veterans, public workforce referrals |
| Facebook Local Jobs | Listings in the Jobs tab of Marketplace, Groups and Pages | US only; candidates contact you through Messenger | Entry-level, trade and service roles |
| Handshake | Basic plan job posting | Pro and Enterprise plans add sourcing tools | Students, recent graduates, early-career hires |
| ZipRecruiter | A free trial for new employers | After the trial you continue on a paid plan or cancel | Testing wide distribution before paying |
| Workable | A 15-day free trial, no credit card | After 15 days the job is archived and removed from job sites | Testing an applicant tracking system |
| Craigslist | Not free for jobs in the US | Job categories in the US cost $10 to $75, varying by area | Local hourly and trades roles, paid |
Free job posting sites and portals in the USA, one by one
Indeed: free, up to three jobs a month
Indeed says "most jobs are eligible to post for free," and its post-a-job page sets the limit: employers posting directly "can post up to three free jobs per calendar month, each staying live for up to 30 days." Past that, you sponsor additional jobs or pay to extend the ones you have. The page lists the countries this applies to (US, UK, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands), says the cost to sponsor "depends on the local market conditions in your area, as well as the job title and location," and notes that the free terms do not apply to staffing agencies. Read Indeed's terms at source.
Three free slots a month suits a small employer hiring one or two common roles. A multi-location operator with rolling openings can hit the cap quickly. Our Indeed alternatives guide grades nine other channels.
LinkedIn: one free job at a time
LinkedIn Help states the rules plainly. Members can have "up to one free job post active at a time and a limited number of free job posts within a 30-day period." A free post "remains active for up to 14 days," is then paused until you promote or close it, and closes automatically after 30 days if it is not promoted. Free posts also carry an application limit that "typically ranges from 10 to 30 applications depending on the role," after which the job drops out of search. The post must be tied to your company's LinkedIn Page. Promoted jobs, by contrast, run on a daily or total budget you set.
It fits a store manager, dispatcher or office role. For a line cook or a CNA it is usually the wrong audience.
Google's job search, through your own careers page
There is no form to "post a job on Google." Google's documentation says that adding JobPosting structured data to your job pages "makes your job postings eligible to appear in a special user experience in Google Search results," and that you can also integrate "by using a third party job site." It recommends the Indexing API over sitemaps so new postings are crawled sooner. Some applicant tracking systems add this markup for you. It is the most durable free placement, because it runs from pages you own. Step-by-step instructions are on how to post a job on Google.
Your state job bank and American Job Center
CareerOneStop, sponsored by the US Department of Labor, says "all employers can post jobs free to their own state job bank," with the caveat that "registration, validation, and posting times may vary by state." The same page describes the National Labor Exchange (NLx), which "collects and distributes job openings from more than 9,000 company websites and from the state job banks," and the network of "nearly 2,400 American Job Centers," whose business services staff can help you post jobs, write postings and "recruit and pre-screen job candidates." CareerOneStop's employer page links to every state's job bank.
Facebook Local Jobs
Meta launched Local Jobs on Facebook in October 2025. Its announcement describes a "dedicated tab on Facebook Marketplace" plus listings "across Groups and Pages," aimed at people in the US looking for "entry-level, trade, and service industry employment," and visible to adults 18 and over. Candidates "reach out to employers instantly via Messenger." Meta's announcement lists no posting fee. Replies arrive as Messenger conversations with no screening questions, so decide who watches that inbox. The full walkthrough, including how Local Jobs differs from a paid ad, is on how to post a job on Facebook.
Handshake: free for early-career hiring
Handshake's employer page offers a free Basic plan to "post a job for free," with Pro and Enterprise tiers that add sourcing and outreach tools. Its network is built around students and graduates. For internships, entry-level supervisors or management trainee programs it is a strong free option. For experienced hourly staff it is not where most of your candidates are.
Free trials: ZipRecruiter and Workable
Several well-known "post jobs free" offers are trials. ZipRecruiter offers new employers a free trial and says it sends your job "to 100+ job sites, including Google Jobs and niche job boards." After the trial you continue on a paid plan or cancel; its page does not publish prices. Workable offers "Post your job free for 15 days, no credit card required," distributed to "15+ job sites"; after 15 days the job is archived and removed from those sites. Run either as a measured test. Our best recruiting sites guide covers what the paid versions buy.
Craigslist: not free for US job posts
Craigslist still appears on free lists, but its fees page lists "Job categories in US and parts of CA" at "$10-75 (fee varies by area)." When the fee pays back is covered on Craigslist job posting cost.
Free hiring sites that aren't job boards
Some of the best free channels are not job sites at all:
- Your own careers page. The only listing you fully control, and with JobPosting markup it feeds Google's job results.
- Employee referrals. Your staff know people who do the same work. Mention the bonus every time you post.
- Training programs and schools. Community college, CNA, CDL and trade programs often take employer postings.
- Local groups. Community and trade groups can work when admins allow job posts.
- Your front door. A sign with the pay rate and a QR code to a short application, for anything with foot traffic.
Free job posting platforms vs free job posting boards
There are two kinds of product. A job posting board is a destination where candidates search: Indeed, LinkedIn, a state job bank. A job posting platform is software that pushes one post out to many boards: ZipRecruiter's distribution, or an applicant tracking system like Workable. Free boards give you one audience at no cost. Free platforms give you many audiences for a limited time. Both reach people searching for work this week. When a specialist board is worth paying for is covered in our guide to niche job boards.
How to get more from a free online job posting
- Put the pay, shift and location in the first line. "$18/hr, Mon to Fri, 6am to 2:30pm, Lancaster" says what frontline candidates check first.
- Keep the application short. A few knockout questions on a phone beat a portal that asks for a resume. In Boostpoint's benchmark, the apply experience explained 70% of the variation in cost per applicant between campaigns, against 30% for click-through rate and 18% for CPM.
- Reply the same day, by text if you can.
- Work to each site's clock. Indeed's free posts last up to 30 days and LinkedIn's pause at 14. Calendar the repost date.
- Track applicants per week by source. It is the fair way to compare free and paid. Our job board ROI guide shows how to compute it from your own records.
Where free job posting stops working
Every free option here is a pull channel: it waits for someone already job hunting to search and find you. That works when plenty of qualified people nearby are searching. It works poorly when the people you want are employed and not browsing job sites: the experienced CNA, the second-shift forklift operator, the CDL driver who would move for home time.
That is the gap paid social advertising fills. A Facebook or Instagram job ad shows the role to adults in the commuting area whether or not they were looking. In Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark of 891 managed campaigns, the median campaign paid $13.88 per applicant and the volume-weighted average was $8.02, including campaign management. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire, and the spread is wide: campaigns with an apply rate over 35% ran $1.61 per applicant, and those under 5% ran $53.77. If your free posts are bringing in enough qualified applicants, keep them and skip the ads.
Run every free option that fits your roles, all the time. Add paid reach only for the roles where free applicants per week fall short of the hires you need.
A free-first plan for a frontline opening
- Day 1: careers page with JobPosting markup, a free Indeed post, your state job bank, Facebook Local Jobs, and the referral bonus. Add LinkedIn for salaried or supervisory roles.
- Day 7: count qualified applicants by source. Fix the title, pay line and application before blaming a site.
- Day 14: repost or refresh anything that has paused or sunk, and decide whether the role needs paid reach.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best free job posting sites?
For US employers: Indeed (up to three free jobs per calendar month, each live up to 30 days), LinkedIn (one free job at a time), Google's job search through JobPosting markup on your own careers page, your state job bank, Facebook Local Jobs in Marketplace, and Handshake for early-career roles. Compare them on qualified applicants per week.
Is Indeed still free to post jobs?
Yes, with a limit. Indeed's post-a-job page says employers posting directly can post up to three free jobs per calendar month, each staying live for up to 30 days, and then sponsor additional jobs. The free terms do not apply to staffing agencies. Indeed's terms can change, so check them before planning around the limit.
Can I post a job on LinkedIn for free?
Yes. LinkedIn allows one free job post active at a time and a limited number within 30 days. A free post stays active for up to 14 days, then pauses until you promote or close it, and free posts have an applicant limit that LinkedIn says typically ranges from 10 to 30. The post must be linked to your company's LinkedIn Page.
What are the free job posting portals in the USA?
The public ones are your state job bank and the American Job Center network. CareerOneStop, sponsored by the US Department of Labor, says all employers can post jobs free to their own state job bank, and its employer page links to every state's site. The largest commercial free options are Indeed and LinkedIn, within their limits.
Is Craigslist free for job postings?
Not in the US. Craigslist's posting fees page lists job categories in the US at $10 to $75, varying by area. See Craigslist job posting cost for when the fee pays back.
Can you post jobs on Facebook for free?
Yes. Meta launched Local Jobs in October 2025, a Jobs tab in Facebook Marketplace with listings also appearing in Groups and on Pages, for entry-level, trade and service roles in the US. Meta's announcement lists no posting fee, and candidates contact you through Messenger. A paid Facebook or Instagram job ad is a separate product that reaches people who are not browsing job listings.
Is there a free job posting site that posts to multiple job boards?
Only on a trial basis. ZipRecruiter offers new employers a free trial and says it sends jobs to 100+ job sites. Workable offers a 15-day free trial that posts to 15+ job sites, after which the job is archived. Google's job search is the one free multi-source channel that does not expire, because it reads job pages on your own site.
When free posts aren't filling the schedule
Boostpoint Attract runs managed Facebook and Instagram job ads, with the creative made for you, to reach the employed people who never open a job site. Connect adds instant text follow-up when someone applies, and Programmatic 2.0 turns an XML job feed into one Meta ad per job. Keep your free listings running; book a demo for the roles they aren't filling.
