How to Recruit Aircraft Mechanics: Where A&P Mechanics Come From and What Makes Them Apply

To recruit aircraft mechanics, decide first whether the job needs a certificated A&P mechanic or a helper working under one, because the FAA certificate rules shape who can apply. Then recruit where certificates are made: FAA-certificated maintenance schools, military maintainers and helpers building documented experience. Put the shift, aircraft types, pay and tool policy in the first lines of the ad, ask one knockout question about the certificate, and call back the same day.

Who you are actually recruiting

BLS Employment Projections 2025-35 count 140,000 aircraft mechanics and service technicians (SOC 49-3011) in 2025, projected to reach 147,600 in 2035, a change of 5.4 percent, with about 11,400 openings a year. The BLS median annual wage in May 2025 was $79,870. Avionics technicians are counted separately (19,800 in 2025, median $82,280).

The BLS handbook lists where aircraft mechanics work: support activities for air transportation (30 percent), air transportation (26 percent), aerospace product and parts manufacturing (18 percent), the federal government (9 percent) and couriers (3 percent). BLS also notes they may work "8- or 10-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays," which is the first thing your ad has to be straight about.

The rule that shapes the whole search is federal. Under 14 CFR 65.71, a mechanic certificate applicant must be at least 18, able to read, write, speak and understand English, and must pass all the prescribed tests within 24 months. Under 65.77 they qualify to test either through a certificated aviation maintenance technician school or with documented practical experience: at least 18 months for one rating, or 30 months working on both airframes and powerplants. That second route is the one employers forget, and it is a recruiting channel in its own right.

Where to find aircraft mechanics

  • FAA-certificated maintenance schools. The FAA keeps a searchable list of approved schools on its facility dashboard. Get to know the program directors near you, offer shop tours and hire students into helper roles before they test.
  • Military aircraft maintainers. The FAA recognizes a military pathway through the Joint Service Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification Council (JSAMTCC) course. Maintainers leaving service near a base are a strong pool; our guide to hiring veterans covers the federal programs.
  • Your own helpers. A helper who works under a certificated mechanic and documents 18 months of practical experience can qualify to test for a rating. Say in your helper ads that you will support that path.
  • Adjacent technicians. Avionics technicians, and mechanics from heavy equipment or diesel shops who want to move into aviation, can start as helpers. They still need the certificate before they sign off work.
  • Referrals. A&P mechanics know each other across the hangar, the ramp and the school they came from. A referral bonus paid once the new hire has stayed 90 days gives them a reason to refer.
  • Social ads. Most certificated mechanics are employed and not browsing job boards. Facebook and Instagram ads reach them while they scroll, in your area. Employment ads run in Meta's Special Ad Category, so you target by location (at least a 15-mile radius), not by age or gender.
  • Job boards. Useful for active seekers and for relocation candidates, but you compete there with every airline and repair station at once.

What to pay aircraft mechanics

Start from the BLS median of $79,870 a year (May 2025) and adjust for your market, your fleet and your shift. Airline line maintenance, repair stations and general aviation shops pay differently, and nights usually carry a differential. Our aircraft mechanic job description has the wage section and a template by setting. Whatever you pay, print the range in the ad. A mechanic comparing two postings will skip the one that hides it.

How to write the aircraft mechanic job ad

Aircraft mechanics check four things before they read anything else:

  • Certificate or helper. Say plainly whether the role requires an A&P certificate, or is a helper or apprentice role working under a certificated mechanic.
  • Shift and schedule. Line maintenance at night, four tens, rotating weekends. Name it.
  • Aircraft and work type. Regional jets, turboprops, piston singles, helicopters; line, heavy check or component work.
  • Pay and tools. The range, the shift differential, and whether you provide tooling or pay a tool allowance.

Sample headlines that follow those rules:

  • "A&P Mechanic, Night Line Maintenance, [airport code]. [Pay range] plus shift differential."
  • "Aircraft Maintenance Helper: we support your path to the A&P certificate."
  • "Turboprop A&P mechanic, four 10-hour days, tool allowance paid."

If the job includes aircraft maintenance duties for an employer covered by 14 CFR Part 120, say it is subject to FAA drug and alcohol testing. 14 CFR 120.105 lists "aircraft maintenance and preventive maintenance duties" as safety-sensitive, including for assistants, helpers and trainees. For the rest of the ad structure, see what makes a good job ad.

Screening questions for aircraft mechanics

Keep the mobile application short. Screen only for what the job legally or genuinely requires:

  • Do you hold an FAA mechanic certificate? (Airframe and powerplant / Airframe only / Powerplant only / In school or testing / No)
  • Which aircraft or engines have you worked on most? (Short answer)
  • This role works [shift]. Can you work that schedule? (Yes / No)
  • This role is subject to FAA drug and alcohol testing. Do you wish to continue? (Yes / No), only where Part 120 applies.

Leave years of experience, type ratings and inspection authorization to the phone screen unless the role truly cannot be done without them. Every extra question costs completions. Our guide to pre-screening questions covers what not to ask.

Speed and follow-up

A certificated mechanic who applies to you has probably applied somewhere else the same week. Text within minutes, call the same day, and offer a hangar walk-through early. With Boostpoint Connect, an applicant gets a text the moment they apply and your team replies from a shared inbox.

What it costs to recruit aircraft mechanics on social

The Technician / mechanic family in Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark ran a median of $13.41 per applicant, with the middle half of campaigns between $7.40 and $23.58, a blended $8.35 and a 16 percent apply rate. That family covers mechanics and technicians broadly, not aircraft mechanics alone. Across the benchmark, the apply experience explained 70 percent of the variation in cost between campaigns: campaigns with apply rates of 10 to 20 percent paid $11.11 per applicant, and those under 5 percent paid $53.77. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

Frequently asked questions

How do you recruit aircraft mechanics?

Recruit where the certificate is made and where certificated mechanics already work: FAA-certificated maintenance schools, separating military maintainers, your own helpers building documented experience, referrals, and social ads that reach employed mechanics in your area. Lead the ad with the certificate requirement, shift, aircraft types and pay.

Where do you find A&P mechanics?

Aviation maintenance technician schools on the FAA's approved list, military bases, regional airports and repair stations, and on Facebook and Instagram, where employed mechanics see ads without searching. Job boards reach active seekers but put you next to every other employer at once.

Does an aircraft mechanic need an FAA certificate?

A person who signs off maintenance for return to service needs the FAA mechanic certificate with the right ratings. Helpers can work under the supervision of a certificated mechanic. See 14 CFR Part 65, Subpart D.

Can someone qualify for the A&P certificate without school?

Yes. Under 14 CFR 65.77 an applicant can document at least 18 months of practical experience for one rating, or 30 months on both airframes and powerplants, instead of graduating from a certificated school. The FAA also recognizes a military pathway.

How much do aircraft mechanics make?

The BLS median annual wage for aircraft mechanics and service technicians was $79,870 in May 2025. Pay varies by setting, shift and aircraft type; the aircraft mechanic job description has more detail.

What screening questions should an aircraft mechanic application ask?

Ask whether they hold the FAA certificate and which ratings, which aircraft they have worked on, whether they can work the shift, and, where Part 120 applies, whether they accept FAA drug and alcohol testing. Leave the rest to the phone screen.

What does it cost to recruit an aircraft mechanic on Facebook?

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark does not report aircraft mechanics separately. The Technician / mechanic family ran a median of $13.41 per applicant, with the middle half of campaigns between $7.40 and $23.58. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

Reach A&P mechanics who are not looking at job boards
