How to Recruit Concrete Finishers: Name the Pour Schedule, Pay for the Cert, and Grow Your Own Finishers

To recruit concrete finishers, be honest about the pour schedule (early starts, long days, weather) and lead with pay, the type of work (flatwork, commercial slabs, decorative) and whether you train. Recruit from laborers and helpers on your own crews, other contractors through referrals, and Facebook and Instagram job ads near your jobsites. Screen for experience level, work type and transportation, offer to pay for ACI certification rather than requiring it, and call applicants the same day.

Who you are actually hiring

BLS counts concrete finishers in the occupation cement masons and concrete finishers. It had 204,800 jobs in 2025 and is projected to reach 208,100 by 2035 (1.6 percent growth), with about 13,600 openings a year (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35). The median annual wage was $57,020 in May 2025. BLS lists no formal educational credential for entry and moderate-term on-the-job training as the typical path.

That profile tells you where your finishers come from: they are laborers who learned to run a bull float, edger and power trowel on a crew. A contractor who only recruits experienced finishers competes with every other contractor for the same people. A contractor who also trains laborers into finishers builds a bench.

Where to find concrete finishers

  • Your own laborers and helpers. Pick the ones who show up early and watch the finishers. Give them trowel time on small pours and a raise when they can finish a section alone.
  • Crew referrals. Finishers know who can close a slab. A referral bonus after a set number of weeks on the job is cheap compared with an empty spot on pour day.
  • Adjacent trades. Construction laborers, form setters, masons and paving crews. See our sibling guide on how to recruit bricklayers and our guide to hiring carpenters and concrete crews.
  • Union halls and apprenticeship programs. Where your company is signatory, or where local programs train cement masons.
  • Social job ads. Finishers are on Facebook and Instagram after the pour, not on job boards. Meta's Employment special ad category requires at least a 15-mile radius and blocks age, gender and ZIP code targeting (see our Meta special ad category explainer), so center the radius on your work.

What to pay concrete finishers

The BLS median annual wage for cement masons and concrete finishers was $57,020 in May 2025. Finishers compare hourly rates, guaranteed hours and overtime, so advertise an hourly range with the top tied to skill (closing slabs alone, decorative or stamped work, running a ride-on trowel). Our concrete finisher job description has the wage section and a comparison against other trades.

How to write the concrete finisher job ad

Say what a week looks like. Concrete schedules follow the pour and the weather, and experienced finishers will ask about early starts, weekend pours and what happens on rain days. The ads that pull the most qualified applicants answer those questions up front.

Sample headlines
Concrete Finishers: flatwork and commercial slabs, steady work, overtime paid.
Laborers: learn to finish concrete. We train you and pay for your certification.
Decorative Concrete Finisher: stamped and stained work, top of our range for your portfolio.

In the body, name the work (residential flatwork, commercial slabs, tilt-up, decorative), the equipment, the travel area, whether you need a driver's license for company vehicles, and whether you provide tools and gear.

ACI certification: pay for it instead of requiring it

The American Concrete Institute offers flatwork certifications. According to ACI, the Concrete Flatwork Finisher certification requires a performance examination and 1,500 hours of actual on-the-job finishing experience (approximately one year of regular full-time work), the Concrete Flatwork Associate requires a written exam and no work experience, and each is valid for five years (ACI). Listing it as a requirement shrinks an already small pool. Offering to pay for it after hire gives your trainees a goal and gives experienced finishers a reason to pick you.

Screening questions for a mobile application

  • What is your experience level? (Laborer or helper, finisher, lead finisher or foreman.)
  • Which work have you done? (Flatwork, commercial slabs, decorative or stamped, curb and sidewalk. Multiple choice.)
  • Do you have reliable transportation to jobsites in our area?
  • When can you start?

Speed and follow-up

A finisher who applies on Tuesday can be on another crew by Friday. Call or text the same day and invite them to a pour for a working interview. Boostpoint Connect, an add-on to Boostpoint Attract, texts each applicant the moment they apply and runs follow-up sequences from a shared inbox, so applicants hear from you before they hear from the next contractor.

What a concrete finisher applicant costs on social

In Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the Skilled trades family ran a median of $14.14 per applicant, a middle half of $7.58 to $21.49, a blended $10.74 and a 15 percent apply rate (Boostpoint 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark). That is a family figure, not a concrete-specific number, and cost per applicant is not cost per hire. Across all campaigns, a 10 to 20 percent apply rate ran $11.11 per applicant and 20 to 35 percent ran $4.41, so a four-question form pays for itself.

Keeping finishers through the season

Finishers leave over hours and respect. If work slows in winter, tell people in the interview what you do about it (indoor slabs, heated pours, shop or yard work) and keep your word. Put trainees on the trowel on a named schedule rather than leaving them on the rake for a year. Pay the certification when they earn the hours, and move their rate when they can close a slab on their own. Crews that see a path stay, and they bring their cousins.

Frequently asked questions

How do you recruit concrete finishers?

Be clear about the pour schedule and pay, recruit from your own laborers, crew referrals, adjacent trades and union programs, and run Facebook and Instagram job ads near your jobsites. Offer to pay for ACI certification and invite applicants to a pour within days.

Where can I find concrete finishers to hire?

Your own laborers and helpers, referrals from your finishers, form setters, masons and paving crews, union halls and apprenticeship programs, and social job ads that reach finishers after work.
