Recruitment advertising for frontline employers

Pool companies hire most of their route techs in a few spring weeks. Boostpoint runs the Facebook and Instagram ads that fill the routes before opening season starts.

How to Recruit Pool Technicians: Hire for the Route, Train the Chemistry

To recruit pool technicians, hire people who can run a route and train them on water chemistry. Experienced pool techs are few, but landscapers, maintenance workers, lifeguards and delivery drivers learn the job quickly. Start ads in late winter, and put how pay works (hourly, per stop or per route), the truck and what happens in winter in the first lines of a Facebook or Instagram ad. Offer paid CPO certification, keep the application to a few mobile questions and call back the same day.

Who you are recruiting

There is no federal occupation code for pool technicians, so BLS does not publish their pay or headcount. The nearest broad federal occupation is general maintenance and repair workers (SOC 49-9071), a much wider occupation that covers building and facilities maintenance. The other rows are the jobs your best candidates hold today.

Pool technician is really three jobs. Route techs clean and balance water on a set number of stops a day. Commercial techs handle apartment complexes, hotels and clubs with bigger equipment and inspections. Repair techs diagnose and replace pumps, heaters and automation. Recruit for each separately. Our pool technician job description has a template and the duties list for each.

Where to find pool technicians

  • Landscapers and lawn care crews. Outdoors all day, used to routes and customer properties, and often looking for steadier work. Our landscaping recruiting guide shows how that pool behaves.
  • Lifeguards and aquatics staff. They already know pools and basic chemistry, and some want a full-time, year-round job after the summer. See our lifeguard shortage research.
  • Maintenance, pest control and delivery drivers. Route work, a company vehicle and independent days are familiar to all three.
  • Your own techs' networks. Pay a referral bonus once the new tech has stayed through the busy season.
  • Homeowners who maintain their own pool. They are on Facebook and Instagram, and some would do it for a paycheck.

Many good candidates never search "pool technician" on a job board, because they have not thought of it as a job they could do. That is the case for social ads: you show the job to people who never went looking for it.

When to recruit pool technicians

In seasonal markets, opening season decides your year. Start ads six to eight weeks before your first openings so new techs finish ride-alongs before the rush. In year-round markets, recruit steadily and add a spring push. Our peak season staffing guide covers planning backward from the date.

How to recruit pool technicians: what the ad must say

A candidate who has done route work checks three things first: how pay works, the truck, and winter.

  • How pay works. Hourly, per stop or per route. Give an expected weekly range for a normal route, because a per-stop rate alone means nothing to a newcomer.
  • The truck and the route. Take-home or from the shop, stops per day and the area covered.
  • Winter. Year-round work (repairs, installs, closings) or seasonal with stated dates. Hiding this is the fastest way to lose people in October.
  • Training and certification. Say you train on chemistry and chemical safety, and that you pay for CPO.
  • The heat. Name it. Honest ads get fewer applicants who quit in July.

Sample headlines. "Pool Route Tech: no experience needed, we train and pay for your CPO." "Pool Service Tech: take-home truck, year-round work." "Former lifeguards: turn pool know-how into a full-time job." Put the pay model and weekly range in the ad body.

Certification and safety facts to get right

The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance's Certified Pool & Spa Operator (CPO) course is a 16-hour program, offered as a two-day class or an online course plus a one-day class, and the certification is valid for five years, per PHTA. Offer it rather than require it for route techs. If you service public or commercial pools, check your state and local health code for operator requirements, and check your state licensing board if the job includes equipment installs or plumbing. Requirements vary by state.

Pool chemicals are hazardous chemicals, and OSHA's Hazard Communication standard requires employers to give employees "effective information and training on hazardous chemicals in their work area at the time of their initial assignment" (29 CFR 1910.1200). Saying in the ad that you train on chemical handling reassures newcomers and signals a careful shop to experienced techs.

Screening questions for the application

  • Do you have a valid driver's license? (Knockout if the job drives a company truck.)
  • Can you work outdoors in heat for most of the day and lift heavy chemical containers? (Knockout only for real job requirements.)
  • Have you worked on pools, in landscaping or in maintenance before? (Informational, not a knockout.)
  • Do you hold a CPO certification? (Informational.)

Do not require experience or a resume. See pre-screening questions for how to keep the form short.

Speed and the first 30 days

Text applicants within minutes and book a ride-along within a day or two; spring applicants are talking to landscapers and other pool companies the same week. Keep new techs on ride-alongs until their chemistry is reliable, then give them a small route first. The techs who stay through the season are the ones who were never left to guess.

What it costs to recruit pool technicians

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark does not report pool technicians as a role family. The closest published comparison is the Skilled Trades and Field Service sector, which had a median of $11.89 per applicant, with a middle half of $6.50 to $24.89 and an 18% apply rate. Across all roles, campaigns with a 20-35% apply rate paid $4.41 per applicant against $53.77 for those under 5%. Full data is on the benchmarks page. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

Frequently asked questions

How do you recruit pool technicians?

Recruit people who can run a route, such as landscapers, lifeguards and maintenance workers, and train them on chemistry. Run Facebook and Instagram ads that state the pay model, the truck and what happens in winter, start six to eight weeks before opening season, and call back the same day.

Where do you find pool technicians?

Landscaping crews, lifeguards and aquatics staff, maintenance and pest control techs, delivery drivers, your own techs' referrals, and homeowners who already maintain their own pools.

Do pool technicians need a CPO certification?

It is not a universal requirement for route techs. For public and commercial pools, operator requirements vary by state and locality, so check your health code. PHTA's CPO course is 16 hours and the certification lasts five years. Offering to pay for it is a strong recruiting line.

When should pool companies start hiring?

In seasonal markets, start ads six to eight weeks before your first openings so new techs finish training before the rush. Year-round markets should recruit steadily with a spring push.

How should you pay pool technicians?

Hourly, per stop and per route all exist. Whichever you use, give an expected weekly range for a normal route in the ad, and say how pay works in winter.

What do pool technicians earn?

BLS does not publish pool technician pay. The closest federal occupation, general maintenance and repair workers, had a May 2025 median annual wage of $49,590, but that covers a much wider group.

How much does it cost to recruit a pool technician on Facebook?

Boostpoint does not report pool techs separately. The closest published comparison, the Skilled Trades and Field Service sector in its 2026 benchmark, had a median of $11.89 per applicant, with a middle half of $6.50 to $24.89. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
