There are few people with “robotics technician” on their resume, and far more maintenance and electrical technicians who could do the job. Boostpoint reaches both on Facebook and Instagram.

How to Recruit Robotics Technicians When Almost Nobody Has the Title
To recruit robotics technicians, widen the search to maintenance, electrical and mechatronics technicians, because the occupation with the title is small. Advertise to employed technicians near your plant on Facebook and Instagram with the pay, shift, robot brands and PLC platform in the first lines, offer paid manufacturer training instead of requiring it, screen for PLC and troubleshooting experience, and text applicants within minutes.
Why robotics technicians are hard to recruit
BLS does not publish robotics technicians on their own. They sit inside electro-mechanical and mechatronics technologists and technicians (SOC 17-3024), an occupation of just 15,700 workers in 2025, with about 1,400 openings a year projected through 2035 and 2.6 percent growth (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35). BLS lists an associate’s degree as the typical entry education.
If you only recruit people who already hold that title, you are fishing in a very small pond. The people doing robot maintenance on most plant floors came from somewhere else, and that is where to look.
Where to find robotics technicians
Maintenance and electrical technicians
Industrial machinery mechanics are a far larger occupation: 446,900 workers in 2025, projected to grow 17.8 percent by 2035 with about 44,400 openings a year (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35). BLS also lists industrial robotics mechanic as an example title inside electrical and electronics repairers, commercial and industrial equipment (SOC 49-2094). A maintenance or electrical technician who troubleshoots PLCs, drives and pneumatics can learn a robot controller. Recruit them, then pay for the manufacturer course. Our maintenance technician recruiting guide covers that pool.
Your own maintenance team
The technician who already knows your cells is often the best candidate. Offer the robotics role internally first, with a pay step and training, and backfill the general maintenance seat, which is easier to hire.
Schools, integrators and the military
- Community college mechatronics, robotics and industrial maintenance programs; hire interns before they graduate
- Field service technicians at robot integrators who are tired of travel and want a home plant
- Veterans with avionics, electronics or equipment maintenance backgrounds
- Technicians at nearby plants running the same robot brands you do
Social ads to employed technicians
Almost everyone above is working. Facebook and Instagram ads reach them off the clock. Employment ads on Meta run in a special ad category, which means no targeting by age, gender or ZIP code and a location radius of at least 15 miles; for a commuting role that is rarely a problem.
What to pay robotics technicians
The BLS median annual wage for electro-mechanical and mechatronics technologists and technicians was $73,900 in May 2025. For industrial machinery mechanics, the pool you will likely convert from, it was $64,520. Pay above the maintenance rate you are recruiting from, or the move is not worth it to the candidate. The wage section of our robotics technician job description has more.
How to write the robotics technician ad
A good technician checks the pay, the shift and on-call expectations, and the equipment. Name the robot brands, the number of cells, the PLC platform and what the robots do. A technician who knows FANUC welding cells reads a posting differently from one that says “automated equipment.”
Sample ad (a hypothetical plant; use your own details): Robotics Technician, 2nd shift, $36 an hour plus differential. Keep 14 FANUC welding cells running on Allen-Bradley PLCs. Maintenance or electrical background? We pay for the FANUC courses. Apply in two minutes from your phone.
Say whether the role is on a dedicated robotics team or part of general maintenance, how on-call works, and what the next job is (controls technician, automation engineer). Those are the questions an experienced technician asks in the first call, and answering them in the ad saves both sides a week.
If the title will put off maintenance technicians, try “Automation Technician” or “Maintenance Technician, Robotics” as a second ad and compare.
Screening questions for robotics technicians
Knock out only on real requirements such as the shift. Score the skills, because training can close most gaps.
- This role is second shift with rotating weekend on-call. Can you work that schedule? (knockout; use your real schedule)
- Which PLC platforms have you troubleshot: Allen-Bradley, Siemens, other?
- Which robot brands have you maintained or written programs for, if any?
- Can you read electrical schematics?
- Have you worked on pneumatics, servo drives or vision systems?
A hands-on fault-finding exercise on a cell in the interview is the best test. Robot maintenance also falls under OSHA’s lockout/tagout standard, which covers servicing and maintenance of machines where unexpected startup or release of stored energy could injure employees and requires employers to train employees on energy control (29 CFR 1910.147). OSHA states that “there are currently no specific OSHA standards for the robotics industry,” so the general standards apply. Ask how the candidate locks out a cell before entering it.
Speed and follow-up
Employed technicians apply on a break and move on. Text within minutes, confirm the pay and shift, and get them on the floor with the maintenance manager within the week.
What a robotics technician applicant costs
Robotics technicians fall in the Technician / mechanic family in Boostpoint’s 2026 benchmark. That family ran a $13.41 median cost per applicant on Meta, with the middle half of campaigns between $7.40 and $23.58, a blended $8.35, and a 16 percent apply rate. Costs include campaign management and cover advertising only; cost per applicant is not cost per hire. See the full benchmark, and manufacturing recruiting for the rest of the plant.
Frequently asked questions
How do you recruit robotics technicians?
Widen the search to maintenance, electrical and mechatronics technicians, advertise to employed technicians near your plant on Facebook and Instagram with pay, shift, robot brands and PLC platform up front, pay for manufacturer training, and text applicants within minutes.
Where can I find robotics technicians?
Among industrial maintenance and electrical technicians, your own maintenance team, community college mechatronics programs, field technicians at robot integrators, veterans with electronics or maintenance backgrounds, and technicians at nearby plants running the same robots.
How much do robotics technicians make?
BLS reports a $73,900 median annual wage in May 2025 for electro-mechanical and mechatronics technologists and technicians, the occupation that includes robotics technicians. See our robotics technician job description.
Should I require robot manufacturer certification?
Treat it as a plus. A technician who knows one controller can learn another, and offering to pay for the manufacturer course widens your pool to maintenance and electrical technicians.
What screening questions should a robotics technician application ask?
The schedule as the only knockout, then PLC platforms, robot brands, schematic reading, and experience with pneumatics, drives or vision systems.
How much does a robotics technician applicant cost on Facebook?
In Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the Technician / mechanic family, which includes robotics technicians, had a $13.41 median cost per applicant and a 16 percent apply rate. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
Are there OSHA rules for robotics technicians?
OSHA says there are no specific standards for the robotics industry, but general industry standards apply, including lockout/tagout (29 CFR 1910.147) for servicing and maintenance.
