How to Recruit Sales Associates: A Store Hiring Guide

To recruit sales associates, lead the ad with the hourly rate, any commission, and the real shifts, run it on Facebook and Instagram around each store, and make the application a two-minute mobile form. Recruit from customers, students, cashiers and restaurant staff, not only people with retail on their resume. Reply by text within minutes and interview the same week, because sales associate candidates take the first store that calls back.

The size of the job

Sales associates are counted by BLS as retail salespersons, an occupation of 3,998,100 workers in 2025. BLS projects it to be roughly flat through 2035 (down 0.3 percent) yet still expects about 520,600 openings a year, nearly all from people leaving the job (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35). There is no formal education requirement and training is short-term, on the job.

For a store operator that means one thing: recruiting sales associates is a permanent process. The stores that stay staffed run it all year, not only when a manager is short for Saturday.

Decide which sales associate you need

A big-box associate spends much of the shift on the register and the floor. A furniture, mattress or electronics associate sells on commission and needs product depth. A boutique associate does a little of everything. The candidate for each is different, and so is the ad. Our sales associate job description has versions for each setting.

Where to find sales associates

  • Your own customers. People who shop your store already like the product. A sign at the register and a post on the store’s social pages cost nothing.
  • Cashiers, restaurant servers and hosts. They already handle customers all shift; commission or a better schedule is often the reason to move.
  • Students and second-job workers for evenings and weekends. Say which shifts are open and how flexible you are around classes.
  • Older and semi-retired adults for daytime weekday shifts, especially in hardware, home and specialty stores.
  • Referrals from your current associates, with a small bonus paid after the new hire’s first 30 or 60 days.
  • Social ads within commuting distance of each store. Most of the people above are not on job boards. Facebook and Instagram reach them in the feed, one ad per store location.

Seasonal peaks deserve their own push. Start holiday recruiting weeks before you need the people, and tell seasonal hires whether the job can become permanent. More on store-level channels is in retail recruitment strategies.

What to pay sales associates

BLS puts the median annual wage for retail salespersons at $35,410 in May 2025. Local minimum wages and the store next door matter more than the national number, so check both. If the job pays commission, give an honest range of what a typical associate earns, not “unlimited earning potential.” The pay section of our sales associate job description has more.

How to write the sales associate ad

A retail candidate decides in seconds based on the hourly rate, commission if any, which shifts are open, and which store. Put all four in the first two lines. A sample for a hypothetical store (use your own rate and shifts):

Sales Associate, Main Street store, $16 an hour plus commission on furniture, evenings and weekends, 20 to 30 hours a week. Help customers pick the right piece, run the register, keep the floor sharp. Staff discount from day one. Apply from your phone in two minutes.

Short headline variations to test: “Part-time Sales Associate, weekends, $16 an hour”, “Sales Associate, electronics, base plus commission”, “Holiday Sales Associate, can become permanent.” Upcoming retail job ad templates collect more.

Screening questions for sales associates

Knock out only on availability. Everything else is scored, because retail skill is learned fast.

  • Which shifts can you work: weekday days, evenings, weekends? (knockout if none match)
  • Have you worked with customers before, in any job?
  • Have you worked on commission or toward a sales goal?
  • How far are you from the store?

Then a short phone or in-store conversation. How a candidate talks to you is how they will talk to a customer. For interview questions, see retail interview questions.

Speed and follow-up

Sales associate candidates apply to several stores in one sitting. Text within minutes, offer an interview in the next day or two, and let store managers hire on the spot when the fit is clear.

Keeping new sales associates

Early turnover often traces back to a gap between the ad and the job. If the schedule changes week to week, say how far ahead it is posted. If the store expects associates to hit a sales goal, say so before the offer. Pair each new hire with an experienced associate for their first few shifts, and have the store manager check in at the end of week one and week four. Our page on retail employee turnover goes further.

What a sales associate applicant costs

Sales associates fall in the Sales family in Boostpoint’s 2026 benchmark. That family ran an $11.61 median cost per applicant, with the middle half of campaigns between $5.99 and $21.17, a blended $6.91, and a 21 percent apply rate. Costs include campaign management and cover advertising only; cost per applicant is not cost per hire. See the full benchmark and our frontline hiring benchmarks by role.

Frequently asked questions

How do you recruit sales associates?

Lead the ad with hourly pay, commission and open shifts, run it on Facebook and Instagram around each store, keep the application to two minutes on a phone, recruit from customers, cashiers, restaurant staff and students, and text applicants within minutes.

Where can I find retail sales associates?

Among your own customers, cashiers and restaurant workers, students wanting evening and weekend hours, semi-retired adults for weekday shifts, referrals from current staff, and local social ads for each store.

How much do sales associates make?

BLS reports a $35,410 median annual wage for retail salespersons in May 2025. Local minimum wages and nearby competitors set the real floor. See our sales associate job description.

What should a sales associate job ad say first?

The hourly rate, commission if any, which shifts are open, and which store. Candidates compare retail openings on those four things.

What screening questions should I ask sales associate applicants?

Shift availability as the knockout, then customer-facing experience, any commission or sales-goal experience, and distance from the store.

How much does a sales associate applicant cost on Facebook?

In Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the Sales family, which includes retail sales associates, had an $11.61 median cost per applicant and a 21 percent apply rate. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

What is the difference between a sales associate and a cashier?

A cashier's job centers on the register. A sales associate greets customers, recommends products and closes the sale, and often runs the register too. If product knowledge or commission is part of the job, recruit and advertise for a sales associate, and say so in the ad so cashier-only candidates can self-select.

When should retailers start seasonal hiring?

Weeks before the peak. Candidates who want seasonal work commit early, and saying whether the role can become permanent widens the pool.
