How to Recruit Tile Setters: Where to Find Them and What to Say

To recruit tile setters, say how you pay and whether it is W-2 or subcontract, name the work (showers, floors, stone, commercial) and show a path from helper to setter. Experienced setters are usually booked on other people's jobs and rarely search job boards, so boards miss most of them. Reach setters, and the helpers you can train, with Facebook and Instagram ads in your service area, a one-minute application and photos of recent work by text. In Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the Skilled trades family had a median of $14.14 per applicant; tile setters are not reported separately.

Where to find tile setters, channel by channel

BLS counts tile setters in tile and stone setters (SOC 47-2044) and their helpers in helpers—brickmasons, blockmasons, stonemasons, and tile and marble setters (47-3011). It lists no formal educational credential as typical for either, with long-term on-the-job training for setters and short-term training for helpers. In other words, setters are made on the job, over years, and the good ones are booked.

  • Flooring installers who want to specialize. LVP and laminate installers already work to a finish standard and often want the better-paid tile work. See how to recruit flooring installers.
  • Remodeling and construction crews. Carpenters' helpers, drywall finishers and general laborers who have done demo and prep in bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Solo setters and small subs. Many would trade chasing invoices for steady work, a crew and a van.
  • Tile and stone showrooms and suppliers. Counter staff and yard workers know the products and the installers.
  • Your setters' referrals. They know who is good and who is tired of being a sub. Pay the bonus once the new hire has stayed 90 days.

Few experienced setters search job boards. They are on Facebook and Instagram after a day on their knees, and an ad in your service area reaches them there. Meta's Employment special ad category requires at least a 15-mile radius and does not allow targeting by age, gender or ZIP code, so the work and pay lines in the ad do the selecting.

BLS projects tile and stone setter employment to grow 9.8% from 2025 to 2035, while employment in the helper occupation that includes tile and marble setters' helpers, along with masons' helpers, falls 11.7%. A shrinking helper pool is a reason to train your own. A setter comparing offers looks at:

  • How you pay. Hourly, by the square foot or by the job, and W-2 or 1099. This decides the real number.
  • The work. Residential showers and floors, large-format porcelain, stone, commercial, or new construction.
  • Materials and tools. Who supplies thinset, membranes, saws and leveling systems.
  • A helper. Whether they work alone or with a helper, and who pays the helper.
  • Steady work. How many weeks of work are booked ahead.

The job ad that works: a sample Facebook ad

Lead with the work and the pay method. An experienced setter wants to know whether you do showers or commercial floors before anything else.

Sample Facebook ad. Headline: "Tile Setter: W-2, steady residential work, helper provided." Text: "Showers, backsplashes and large-format floors in homes across our service area. Hourly W-2 pay with overtime, company van, and we supply the materials and saws. Six weeks of work booked ahead. Send photos of your work after you apply; no résumé needed." For helpers: "Tile Helper: learn to set tile, paid from day one." Write your actual pay range in the ad body.

Screening: knockout questions for a one-minute apply

  • How many years have you set tile as the lead installer? (Informational; use it to route setters and helpers, not to knock out.)
  • Which work have you done? Showers / floors / large format / stone / commercial. (Multi-select; informational.)
  • Do you have a valid driver's license? (Knockout only if the job drives a company vehicle.)
  • Are you looking for W-2 employment or subcontract work? (Knockout only if you offer one and not the other.)

Ask for photos of recent work by text after the application, not as an upload inside it. In the Skilled trades family of Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, 15% of clickers finished the form, and every extra step lowers that. See pre-screening questions.

Subcontract vs W-2 crews, and the helper-to-setter pipeline

Many setters work as subcontractors and will ask which you are offering. Say it in the ad. Some setters want a W-2 job with benefits and steady hours; others want to stay independent. An ad that is vague on this attracts both and disappoints one.

How you classify the people you hire is a legal decision, not a recruiting one. The IRS says a business "must determine whether the individuals providing services are employees or independent contractors," weighing behavioral control, financial control and the type of relationship, and that "no one factor stands alone in making this determination." States apply their own tests for wage, unemployment and workers' compensation purposes. If your setters work set hours, use your materials and work only for you, get advice before calling them subcontractors. This is general information, not legal advice.

The longer-term fix is a helper-to-setter pipeline. Hire helpers for prep, mixing, grouting and cleanup, pair each with a setter, and write down the steps: first floors, then walls, then showers and waterproofing, with the pay at each step. The Ceramic Tile Education Foundation's Certified Tile Installer program gives the ladder a finish line: it tests experienced installers with a written exam and a hands-on test, and it says installers may take the exams with "at least two years of experience as the lead installer setting ceramic tile on a full-time basis." It notes that "Experience as a helper, improver, grouter, or finisher does not qualify," so promoting a helper to lead is the step that starts that clock. Paying for the test is a recruiting line for setters and a retention line for helpers.

Speed and the first 90 days

A setter who applies at night has a job in the morning. Text within minutes, ask for photos, call the same day, and offer a paid trial day on a real job once the photos check out. Boostpoint Connect, the SMS add-on to Boostpoint Attract, sends an instant text when someone applies and runs automated text sequences per job; your team books the interview. See our recruiting text message templates. Then keep the promises: the booked work, the helper and the step-up dates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recruit tile setters?

Say how you pay and whether the job is W-2 or subcontract, name the work, and show a path from helper to setter. Run it as a Facebook and Instagram ad in your service area, keep the application to a few mobile questions, and ask for photos of recent work by text.

Where do I find tile setters to hire?

Among flooring installers who want to specialize, remodeling and construction crews, solo setters and small subs who want steady work, tile showroom and supplier staff, and your own setters' referrals. For long-term supply, hire helpers and train them.

What should a tile setters job ad say?

The type of work (showers, floors, large format, stone, commercial), the pay method and range, W-2 or subcontract, who supplies materials and tools, whether a helper is provided, how much work is booked ahead, and a one-minute application with photos sent afterward.

How much do tile setters make?

BLS reports a May 2025 median annual wage of $55,690 for tile and stone setters and $47,550 for their helpers. Floor layers (except carpet, wood and hard tiles) had a median of $56,460. How you pay, hourly or by the square foot, changes what a setter actually earns.

How long does it take to hire tile setters?

Experienced setters are usually booked, so expect the ad to run until one is ready to move. Once they apply, text within minutes, review photos the same day and offer a paid trial day within the week. Growing helpers into setters takes longer but gives you a steady supply.
