What a flooring installer does

A flooring installer prepares a floor and lays a finished surface on it: vinyl plank and sheet, laminate, hardwood, carpet or tile. Most of the skill is in what the customer never sees: taking up the old floor, getting the subfloor flat, clean and dry, and planning the layout and seams so the finished floor looks right and lasts.

BLS covers the trade as flooring installers and tile and stone setters (SOC 47-2040), which it splits into four occupations: carpet installers, floor layers (except carpet, wood and hard tiles), floor sanders and finishers, and tile and stone setters. The Occupational Outlook Handbook lists the typical duties:

  • Removing existing materials from floors, walls or other surfaces
  • Cleaning and leveling the surface to be covered
  • Measuring the area and cutting material to fit
  • Arranging materials according to design plans
  • Placing materials and securing them with adhesives, nails or staples
  • Filling joints with filler compound and removing the excess
  • Trimming excess carpet or linoleum
  • Applying finishes, such as sealants and stains

O*NET’s task list for floor layers (47-2042.00), whose reported titles include Flooring Installer, Floor Installer and Vinyl Installer, adds the detail: inspecting surfaces for firmness and dryness, building a smooth foundation with plywood or waterproof compound, marking guidelines with chalk lines, deciding where traffic areas and seams go, rolling sheet goods, and cutting flooring to fit around obstructions.

Which installer are you hiring?

Most installers cross at least two of these lines, and many flooring companies want someone who can do vinyl plank, laminate and carpet in the same week. Put the materials in the job title. “Flooring Installer, LVP and Carpet” tells a qualified installer in four words whether this is their job.

BLS describes the work as physically demanding, with much of the day spent reaching, bending and kneeling, and says installers wear kneepads, safety goggles and dust masks. Say that plainly in the posting; it filters out people who would quit in the first week.

Requirements: what to ask for, and what to drop

RequirementWhat to know
EducationBLS lists no formal educational credential as typical for this trade. Drop the diploma requirement.
ExperienceBLS says installers learn on the job, sometimes starting as a helper, and some through an apprenticeship. For lead installers ask for the materials you need; for helpers ask for nothing.
MaterialsName them. An installer who does only carpet and one who does only tile are different hires.
Tools and vehicleSay what they must own and what you supply. Many experienced installers own their own tools and truck; say whether that changes the pay.
PhysicalKneeling most of the day is the real demand. Say so, and say whether you supply knee pads and dust control.
PortfolioPhotos of recent work are more useful than years of experience. Ask for them in a text rather than as an upload in the application.
BLS puts self-employed workers at 21 percent of flooring installers and tile and stone setters. If you are hiring W-2 employees, say so, with the hours and benefits; that is the offer a self-employed installer weighs against running their own business. If you are offering subcontract work, say that instead, and describe how jobs are assigned and when you pay.

Customizing it by setting

Residential remodel and retail flooring stores

The installer is in the customer’s home. Say how many jobs a week, the typical job size, and who handles measuring and customer questions.

New construction

BLS reports construction of buildings as the best paid of the listed industries, at a $59,090 median. Say the builders you work with, the pace and whether work follows the housing schedule through winter.

Tile

Say the scope: floors only, or showers, backsplashes and waterproofing too. Tile setters had a $55,690 median and are projected to grow about 10 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than the trade as a whole.

Commercial

Carpet tile, sheet vinyl, rubber and night or weekend work in occupied buildings. Say the shifts and any prevailing wage or union work.

What flooring installers earn

Flooring installers and tile and stone setters had a median wage of $54,390 a year, or $26.15 an hour, in May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $36,910 and the highest 10 percent more than $89,320.

IndustryMedian annual wage (May 2025)Share of employment
Construction of buildings$59,0904%
Specialty trade contractors$55,99058%
Manufacturing$46,7806%

There were 97,000 flooring installers and tile and stone setters in 2025, and BLS projects employment to grow 4 percent to 101,300 by 2035, with about 6,400 openings a year. Growth is uneven: BLS projects floor layers to grow 9 percent and tile and stone setters 10 percent, while carpet installers decline 16 percent. The projections point away from carpet and toward hard surfaces; if your installers do both, lead with the hard surfaces.

What it costs to reach a flooring installer

The closest benchmark family is skilled trades. On Meta it has a median cost per applicant of $14.14 across our managed campaigns, with the middle half between $7.58 and $21.49, a blended figure of $10.74 and a 15 percent apply rate. The all-role median is $13.88.

Trades candidates abandon long forms. Ask the questions that decide the hire (which materials, own tools, driver’s license) and nothing else, then call the same day. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

The job description is not the job ad

The template is the document. The ad has to reach installers who are busy on someone else’s job.

  • First line: materials, pay and whether it is W-2 or subcontract.
  • Say how much work is booked. A backlog tells an installer the hours are real.
  • Say what you supply: truck, trailer, saws, dust control.
  • Ask for photos by text instead of a resume.

Frequently asked questions

What does a flooring installer do?

A flooring installer removes old flooring, prepares the subfloor so it is clean, level and dry, measures and plans the layout, cuts material to fit and installs vinyl, laminate, hardwood, carpet or tile, then fits transitions and trim, applies finishes where needed and cleans up. Much of the skill is in the preparation the customer never sees.

What qualifications does a flooring installer need?

BLS lists no formal educational credential as typical. Installers learn on the job, often starting as a helper, and some complete an apprenticeship. Employers usually want experience with the specific materials, basic math for measuring, a driver’s license and the physical stamina to kneel and lift for most of the day.

How much do flooring installers make?

Flooring installers and tile and stone setters had a median wage of $54,390 a year, or $26.15 an hour, in May 2025. Floor layers had a $56,460 median, tile and stone setters $55,690, floor sanders and finishers $50,440 and carpet installers $50,340. The top 10 percent earned more than $89,320.

What is the difference between a flooring installer and a tile setter?

BLS treats them as related but separate occupations. Floor layers install resilient flooring such as vinyl and linoleum, carpet installers lay carpet, and tile and stone setters install ceramic, marble, granite and glass tile using trowels and grout. Many flooring companies need installers who work across several of these.

Is flooring installation a growing trade?

Overall, BLS projects 4 percent growth from 97,000 jobs in 2025 to 101,300 in 2035, with about 6,400 openings a year. Floor layers and tile setters are projected to grow faster, while carpet installer employment is projected to fall 16 percent.

Are flooring installers usually employees or subcontractors?

Both are common. BLS reports that 21 percent of flooring installers and tile and stone setters are self-employed and 58 percent work for specialty trade contractors. State in your posting whether the role is a W-2 job or subcontract work, because it changes pay, taxes, insurance and who supplies tools.

Is flooring installation physically demanding?

Yes. BLS says the work is physically demanding, with much of the time spent reaching, bending and kneeling, and that installers wear kneepads, safety goggles and dust masks. Being honest about that in your posting reduces early quits.

What should a flooring installer job posting include?

The materials, the type of work (remodel, new construction or commercial), the pay rate or per-square-foot rate, whether it is W-2 or subcontract, what tools and vehicle you supply, how much work is booked and the physical demands. Ask for photos of recent work instead of a resume.

How much does it cost to recruit flooring installers on social media?

Our 2026 benchmark does not break out flooring. The closest family, skilled trades, had a median cost per applicant of $14.14 on Meta, with the middle half of campaigns between $7.58 and $21.49 and a 15 percent apply rate. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
