How to Recruit Window Installers: Pay Math, the Truck, and the Lead-Safe Card
To recruit window installers, recruit from the trades that already do the work: siding, trim, door, roofing and carpentry crews, plus helpers you can train. Open the ad with pay shown as a real weekly example, the schedule, and what you provide (truck, tools, ladders). Offer to pay for the EPA lead-safe renovator course rather than requiring it, keep the application to a few phone-friendly questions, and call back the same day.
Who you are actually recruiting
There is no federal occupation called window installer. The closest match on tasks is glaziers (SOC 47-2121), who had 59,200 workers in 2025 in the BLS Employment Projections 2025-35, are projected to reach 60,300 by 2035 (1.9 percent growth), and have about 3,900 openings a year. Their May 2025 median annual wage was $57,080, and BLS lists apprenticeship as the typical training. Carpenters (SOC 47-2031), whose work also includes window and door frames, are a much larger trade at 889,700 workers in 2025 with a May 2025 median of $60,580. A residential replacement installer could be counted under either, so treat both as reference points rather than a count of installers.
What that means for recruiting: the pool of people with "window installer" on their resume is small, but the pool of people who can learn it quickly is large. Your best hires often come from an adjacent trade.
Where to find window installers
- Siding, trim, gutter and roofing crews. They already work on ladders, on exteriors and around flashing. Seasonal slowdowns in roofing are a good time to reach them.
- Carpenters and finish carpenters. Squaring an opening, shimming and trim are carpentry. See the carpenter job description for that pool.
- Glass shop and door installers. Commercial glazing is different work, but the handling and sealing skills transfer. The glazier job description covers that trade.
- Handymen and remodelers working for themselves. Many would trade irregular jobs for steady installs, a truck and benefits. Say those three things.
- Helpers from general labor. Hire helpers, pair them with a lead installer, and grow your own. It is slower but it is the only source that scales.
- Referrals from your current installers. Pay the bonus after the new hire's first 90 days.
Most of these people are not searching job boards for "window installer." They are working. That is why ads in their Facebook and Instagram feeds reach them when a posting does not. Our roofing, siding and exteriors hiring guide covers recruiting across these crews.
What to pay window installers
BLS publishes no window installer wage series, so use the glazier and carpenter medians above as reference points and check what installers earn in your market. The window installer job description has the full pay section with percentiles for both occupations. If you pay per unit, the ad has to show the math: what a typical day and week pays at your usual volume. A per-unit rate with no example reads as a risk to anyone who has been paid that way before.
How to write the ad
An experienced installer decides in seconds, and checks four things: pay, schedule, what you provide, and whether work is steady.
Sample headlines. "Window installers: company truck, tools and ladders provided. See a real weekly pay example." / "Carpenters and siding installers: learn replacement windows with a paid lead installer." / "Year-round window and door installs. We pay for your EPA lead-safe certification."
- Say whether crews meet at the shop or go direct to the job, and the usual start time.
- Say how slow season is handled. Year-round work is a selling point if it is true.
- Say whether the job includes doors, trim, capping or siding.
- Write for your whole service area. Meta employment ads run in a special ad category with no targeting by age, gender or ZIP code and a minimum 15-mile radius.
The lead-safe rule belongs in the ad
EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting program says anyone paid to perform work that disturbs paint in housing and child-occupied facilities built before 1978 must be certified, and that window replacement is always covered regardless of square footage (EPA RRP). Under 40 CFR 745.90, a certified renovator completes an accredited course (accredited by EPA or an authorized state or tribal program) and must train workers on the lead-safe work practices they will use. EPA has authorized some states to run their own RRP programs (EPA lists them), so check which program applies to you. Offering to pay for the renovator course opens the job to installers who have never needed the card.
Screening questions for a mobile application
- Do you have a valid driver's license? (knockout if installers drive company trucks; state any driving record standard in the ad)
- Can you climb ladders and work at heights? (knockout; it is the job)
- Can you work our posted schedule, including start time? (knockout)
- Which of these have you installed: replacement windows, new construction windows, doors, siding, trim? (sorting only)
- Do you hold an EPA lead-safe renovator certification? (sorting only, if you pay for the course)
Speed and the first ride-along
Text applicants within minutes. For experienced installers, replace the sit-down interview with a morning on a job with your lead installer; both sides learn more. Send the offer the same week, because a good installer who is looking will not be looking for long.
What it costs to reach window installers
In Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, the Skilled trades family ran a median of $14.14 per applicant on Meta, with the middle half of campaigns between $7.58 and $21.49, a blended $10.74 and a 15 percent apply rate. The all-campaign median was $13.88. The apply experience explains 70 percent of cost variation between campaigns, which is why the screening list above stays short. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire. See the full benchmark.
Frequently asked questions
How do you recruit window installers?
Recruit from adjacent trades such as siding, trim, roofing and carpentry, and hire helpers you can train. Lead the ad with a real weekly pay example, the schedule and what you provide, offer to pay for lead-safe certification, keep the application short and call back the same day.
Where can I find window installers?
Among siding, gutter and roofing crews, finish carpenters, glass shop and door installers, self-employed handymen and remodelers, and referrals from your current installers. Most are working, so Facebook and Instagram ads reach them better than a job board post.
How much do window installers make?
BLS publishes no window installer wage. The closest occupation, glaziers, had a May 2025 median of $57,080 a year, and carpenters $60,580. Check local rates; the window installer job description has the full pay section.
Do window installers need EPA lead certification?
For homes and child-occupied facilities built before 1978, EPA's RRP program requires certification, and window replacement is always covered. The firm must be certified and a certified renovator must train workers on lead-safe practices. EPA has authorized some states to run their own programs.
Should I pay window installers per unit or hourly?
Either can work. If you pay per unit, show a typical daily and weekly example in the ad, because a bare per-unit rate reads as a risk to candidates.
What screening questions should a window installer application ask?
Knockouts for a driver's license if installers drive, ladders and heights, and the posted schedule. Ask what they have installed and whether they hold lead-safe certification as sorting questions.
How much does it cost to recruit a window installer on Facebook?
The Skilled trades family in Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark ran a median of $14.14 per applicant with a 15 percent apply rate. That is cost per applicant, not cost per hire.
