Golf Course Recruiting: How to Staff Grounds, Clubhouse and Outside Service Before Opening Day

Golf course recruiting is three hiring problems at once: an early-morning grounds crew, a clubhouse food and beverage team, and outside-service staff who work the cart barn, range and bag drop. Start recruiting weeks before the season opens, invite last year's staff back first, and run ads that state the pay, the start time and the perks (such as golf privileges) in the first lines. Keep the application short and mobile, and reply by text the same day.

Which roles a golf course hires

BLS does not publish a golf course occupation, but its example job titles place most course roles clearly. Greenskeepers fall under landscaping and groundskeeping workers, head greenskeepers and turf supervisors under first-line supervisors of landscaping, golf caddies under amusement and recreation attendants, and golf club managers under entertainment and recreation managers. The figures below are national and cover every employer in each occupation, not golf courses alone.

Occupations behind golf course jobs (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35; BLS, May 2025 median annual wage)
Course roleBLS occupationOpenings per yearMedian annual wage
Grounds crew, greenskeeperLandscaping and groundskeeping workers149,500$39,150

The grounds crew, outside-service and food and beverage occupations all list no formal educational credential for entry, which means your competition for them is every restaurant, landscaper and retailer nearby, not other courses.

What makes golf course recruiting hard

  • The season. In northern markets much of the staff is seasonal and has to be rebuilt every spring. In warm-weather markets the busy season runs the other way. Either way, the hiring window is short and fixed by the calendar.
  • The hours. Grounds crews mow and set pins before play starts, often at dawn. Clubhouse and outside-service staff work weekends, holidays and events. Candidates need to know which schedule they are applying for.
  • Licensing on the grounds side. Under federal law, anyone who applies or supervises the use of restricted use pesticides must be certified under EPA regulations and state, territorial or tribal law, and the federal minimum age for certification is 18. Requirements for other pesticide and fertilizer work vary by state, so check your state's lead agency before you write the requirement into an ad.
  • Alcohol service. The minimum age to serve alcohol and any server training rules vary by state. Confirm yours before you open bartender or beverage cart roles to younger applicants.

Where to find golf course staff

  • Last season's staff. Your returning staff are the fastest hires you have. Contact them before the season starts, and ask each one to bring a friend.
  • Adjacent employers. Landscaping crews are a natural source for the grounds team, and restaurant and hotel staff for the clubhouse. Our guides to landscaping recruiting and hospitality recruiting go deeper on each pool.
  • Turfgrass programs. Students in turfgrass management programs at community colleges and universities are the pipeline for assistant superintendent roles and summer internships.
  • Golfers and retirees. Outside-service, starter and ranger roles appeal to people who play. Golf privileges are the perk to lead with.
  • Facebook and Instagram. Most of the people you want are not searching job boards. A job ad or a hiring-event ad in their feed reaches them near the course. See how to promote a hiring event for a pre-season open house.

What the golf course job ad must say

Grounds candidates check the start time, the hourly rate and whether the job runs year-round or ends in the fall. Clubhouse candidates check the pay (including tips), the shifts and whether weekends are required. Outside-service candidates check the pay and the perks. Our groundskeeper job description has a template for the grounds side, and how to hire servers covers clubhouse front-of-house ads.

Sample headlines (swap in your own details): "Grounds crew, 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., done before most people's lunch." "Clubhouse servers: weekday and weekend shifts, tips on top of hourly pay." "Outside service: work the cart barn and range, and play the course on your days off."

Screening questions for a mobile application

Ask only what decides whether someone can do the job, and leave the rest for a short interview.

  • Can you start at 6 a.m.? (grounds roles, using your real start time)
  • Which days can you work, including weekends? (clubhouse and outside service)
  • Are you available for the full season, through your planned closing date?
  • Do you hold a current pesticide applicator certification? (only where the role requires one)
  • Are you legally authorized to work in the United States?

Speed and follow-up

Seasonal candidates apply to several employers in the same few weeks. Reply by text the same day and offer a short on-site interview or a spot at your hiring event. Boostpoint Connect, the SMS add-on to Attract, sends an instant text when someone applies and runs automated text sequences set up per job, so no one waits until Monday for a reply.

What golf course recruiting costs on social

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark has no golf, grounds or food and beverage family, so we do not quote one for these roles. Across all 891 campaigns, the median cost was $13.88 per applicant. For equipment technicians, the closest family is Technician / mechanic, with a $13.41 median. The most useful finding for a course is that the apply experience explains 70% of cost variation between campaigns: campaigns with an apply rate over 35% averaged $1.61 per applicant, while those under 5% averaged $53.77. The full tables are on the benchmark page. These are advertising costs per applicant, not cost per hire.

Employment ads on Meta run in the Employment special ad category: no targeting by age, gender or ZIP code, and a minimum 15-mile radius. Name the course and town in the ad so candidates can judge the drive. More outdoor and hospitality roles are covered on our frontline hiring hub.

Frequently asked questions

When should a golf course start recruiting for the season?

Start before the season opens, early enough to contact returning staff first and then fill the gaps. The grounds crew is usually needed before the clubhouse opens, so recruit for it first.

What do golf course grounds crew workers earn?

Greenskeepers fall under the BLS occupation landscaping and groundskeeping workers, which had a May 2025 median annual wage of $39,150. Head greenskeepers and turf supervisors fall under first-line supervisors of landscaping, lawn service, and groundskeeping workers, at a $58,430 median.

Do golf course workers need a pesticide license?

Anyone who applies or supervises the use of restricted use pesticides must be certified under EPA regulations and state, territorial or tribal law, and the federal minimum age is 18. Other pesticide and fertilizer rules vary by state, so check with your state's lead agency. The EPA page explains the federal standard.

Where do golf courses find seasonal staff?

Returning staff and their referrals come first, then landscaping crews for the grounds team, restaurant and hotel workers for the clubhouse, turfgrass students for internships, and golfers and retirees for outside service. Facebook and Instagram ads reach all of these groups near the course.

What perks help golf course recruiting?

Golf privileges are the perk most specific to a course, especially for outside-service roles. Early finish times for the grounds crew, tips in the clubhouse and meals during shifts are worth stating too, if you offer them.

What does it cost to recruit golf course staff on social media?

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark has no golf course family. Across all campaigns the median was $13.88 per applicant, and the apply experience explained 70% of cost variation between campaigns, so a short mobile application is the biggest lever. See the benchmark.

Can a golf course target job ads to people who play golf?

Meta's Employment special ad category does not allow targeting by age, gender or ZIP code and requires at least a 15-mile radius. Write the ad so golfers recognize themselves in it, for example by leading with golf privileges.
