How to Hire General Laborers: Where to Find Them, What the Ad Must Say, and Why the First Call Wins
To hire general laborers, write an ad whose first line gives the hourly rate, the start time and the site, and say “no experience needed” if you train. Reach laborers who already work in warehouses, landscaping, restaurants and on other crews with local social job ads and referrals, not just job boards. Ask two or three questions (transportation, availability, start date), call the same day, and keep an always-on campaign so you have a bench when the next person quits.
Who you are hiring: “general laborer” is four different jobs
“General laborer” is a job title, not a BLS occupation. The same title covers a person unloading trucks, one carrying material on a construction site, one on a landscaping crew and one feeding a production line. BLS counts them in separate occupations, and the pay, hours and the people who apply differ for each.
| Where the laborer works | BLS occupation | US employment, 2025 | Openings per year | Median annual wage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warehouse, distribution, loading docks | Laborers and freight, stock, and material movers, hand | 2,940,300 | 340,500 | $40,240 |
| Construction sites | Construction laborers | 1,489,300 | 120,000 | $47,120 |
| Landscaping and grounds crews | Landscaping and groundskeeping workers | 1,188,600 | 149,500 | $39,150 |
| Plants and production lines | Helpers, production workers | 167,400 | 20,900 | $39,070 |
What they share: BLS lists short-term on-the-job training for all four, and no formal educational credential for three of them (production helpers typically have a high school diploma). You are hiring for reliability, physical ability and showing up on time, and you teach the rest. That is why the laborer market is won on speed and reach rather than on finding a rare skill. Farm labor is its own market with its own seasons and visa programs; see how to hire farm workers.
Where to find general laborers
Most people who would make good laborers are working somewhere else right now, often in another hourly job with worse pay, worse hours or no path forward. Recruit where they already are.
- Your own crew. Laborers know other laborers, and a referral from someone who shows up on time is one of the best screens you have. Pay the bonus after the new hire has stayed a set period.
- Adjacent hourly jobs. Warehouse workers who want day shifts, landscapers facing the winter slowdown, restaurant kitchen staff who want set hours, retail stockers who want more pay. Name what you offer that their current job doesn’t.
- Social job ads. A Facebook or Instagram ad in a radius around the site reaches employed laborers in the feed they already scroll. Meta’s employment ad rules mean the audience can’t be targeted by age, gender or ZIP code and must cover at least 15 miles around a city or address, so the ad copy does the sorting.
- Job boards. Useful for the people actively searching this week. They are the smallest part of the pool and see every other employer’s ad next to yours.
- Staffing agencies. Fast for a surge or a one-week job, but you pay a markup for as long as the worker stays on their payroll. For permanent roles, hiring direct can cost less once you can bring applicants in yourself; our direct hire vs temp-to-hire guide covers the trade-off.
What the general laborer job ad must say
A laborer compares your job against whatever they are doing now, and checks four things before applying: the pay, the start time, where the work is and whether experience is needed. Put all four in the first two lines. Everything else can wait for the phone call.
Example, construction: “General laborers, $20 an hour, 6:30 a.m. start, Monday to Friday. Crew meets at our yard in Lancaster; we drive you to the site. No experience needed, we train you and pay for your OSHA 10.”
Example, warehouse: “Warehouse laborers, day shift 7 to 3:30, $18.50 an hour, weekly pay. Loading and unloading trucks at our York warehouse. No experience needed.”
These are examples; use your own rate, hours and location. Then add the reasons to pick you: weekly pay, overtime when it is available, a set crew, paid training, and the path from laborer to operator, finisher, forklift driver or crew lead. Our construction laborer job description covers the full posting for site work.
Laborer recruiting: screening questions that don’t lose people
General laborer applicants apply from a phone, often during a break at another job. Every extra question loses some of them, so ask only what the job requires:
- Do you have reliable transportation to the site or yard? (Name the actual place in your form.)
- Can you work the schedule (for example, Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m.)?
- When could you start?
- Only if the job needs it: do you have a valid driver’s license, or can you lift a stated weight with or without accommodation?
Leave out the resume upload and questions about years of experience on a no-experience job. On OSHA 10: OSHA says its Outreach Training Program is voluntary and not an OSHA requirement, though some states, municipalities or others may require it as a condition of employment. Check your state and your general contractor, and if you need the card, offer to pay for it after hire rather than making it a gate. Work authorization is verified on Form I-9 after hire, not screened for in the ad; see our Form I-9 requirements guide.
How to hire general laborers fast: the same-day call
Laborers often apply to more than one job at a time, and many take the first real offer, so the employer who calls first has the best chance. The interview for this job can be short: a site or warehouse visit, a look at the work, and a start date.
- Text within minutes of the application to confirm you got it and offer a visit time.
- Call the same day. A foreman or site lead who can answer questions about the work does better than an office voicemail.
- Book the start date on the call if the visit goes well. Every day between offer and start is a day for another employer to call.
- Confirm the day before with the start time, the address and what to bring (boots, gloves, ID for the I-9).
Keep a bench: always-on hiring for high-turnover crews
With hundreds of thousands of openings a year across these occupations, most of them from people leaving, laborer turnover is a normal operating cost, not a crisis. Starting a new ad every time two people quit means waiting a week for applicants you could have had already. An always-on campaign at a lower budget keeps a short list of recent applicants you can call the day someone leaves. Re-contact good applicants you didn’t hire; the person who was second choice last month may be free now. What it costs to recruit general laborers
Boostpoint’s 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark (891 managed Meta campaigns, 1,334 campaign-months) has no single general laborer family. For warehouse and production laborers, the Warehouse / production family in the benchmark is the fair reference: a median of $9.83 per applicant, a middle half of $3.15 to $18.72, a volume-weighted $4.44 and a 20% apply rate. For laborers in other settings, use the all-role median of $13.88 as the reference. Costs are what advertisers paid for advertising only; cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
The wide range inside the warehouse family comes mostly from the application. Across all campaigns the apply experience explained 70% of the variation in cost per applicant: campaigns where under 5% of people who clicked finished applying paid $53.77 per applicant, those at 20% to 35% paid $4.41, and those above 35% paid $1.61. For a laborer job, a short form with a visible hourly rate is one of the cheapest improvements you can make. Full figures are on the benchmark page.
The first two weeks
Laborers who leave often leave in the first days, before they know anyone. Pair each new hire with a crew member for the first week, give them the right gear on day one, pay correctly and on time from the first check, and ask on day three and day ten what is harder than expected. Show the next step early: operator, finisher, forklift or crew lead, and what it pays.
Frequently asked questions
How do you hire general laborers?
Put the hourly rate, start time and site in the first line of the ad, say no experience is needed if you train, and reach employed laborers with local social job ads and crew referrals. Ask only about transportation, schedule and start date, call every applicant the same day, and book a start date on the call.
Where can I find general laborers?
Your own crew's referrals first, then workers in adjacent hourly jobs such as warehouse, landscaping, restaurant kitchens and retail stocking, reached with a local Facebook or Instagram job ad. Job boards reach only people searching this week, and staffing agencies are fastest for short surges but charge a markup for as long as the worker stays on their payroll.
How do you recruit laborers quickly?
Speed of contact decides most laborer hires. Text applicants within minutes, call the same day with someone who knows the work, set the site visit and start date on that call, and confirm the day before. An always-on ad keeps a list of recent applicants so you are not starting from zero each time someone quits.
What should a general laborer job ad say?
The pay, the start time, where the work is and whether experience is needed, all in the first two lines. Then the reasons to choose you: weekly pay, overtime, a set crew, paid training and the path to operator, forklift driver or crew lead. Leave out long duty lists and resume requirements.
Do general laborers need OSHA 10?
Not under federal rules. OSHA says its Outreach Training Program, which issues the 10-hour card, is voluntary and not an OSHA requirement, though some states, municipalities or others may require it as a condition of employment. Check your state and your general contractor, and offer to pay for the card after hire rather than making it a hiring gate.
How much do general laborers make?
It depends on the setting. BLS May 2025 median annual wages were $40,240 for hand laborers and material movers, $47,120 for construction laborers, $39,150 for landscaping and groundskeeping workers and $39,070 for production helpers. Check what employers near you advertise and put your own rate in the first line.
What does it cost to recruit general laborers on Facebook?
Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark has no single general laborer family. The Warehouse / production family ran a median of $9.83 per applicant with a 20% apply rate, and the all-role median was $13.88. Costs include campaign management and cover advertising only; cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
