How to Recruit Dialysis Technicians: Hire the Trainee, Certify in 18 Months

To recruit dialysis technicians, stop requiring certification at hire. Federal rules for Medicare-participating clinics let a new patient care technician certify within 18 months of being hired, after an approved training program under a registered nurse. That opens the role to CNAs, medical assistants, phlebotomists and other patient care workers. Advertise paid training, the start time and the pay on Facebook and Instagram, ask three or four screening questions, call back the same day and give every applicant a class start date.

Who you are actually hiring

A dialysis technician (often titled patient care technician or hemodialysis technician) sets up and safety-checks the machine, cannulates the patient's access, monitors the patient through treatment and ends it safely, under the direction of a registered nurse. Patients come back several times a week for years, so the technician is also the person they see most.

BLS does not publish a dialysis technician occupation. The title is folded into health technologists and technicians, all other (SOC 29-2099), a mixed group that also includes respiratory therapy technicians and EEG technologists. That group had 185,600 jobs in 2025, a projected change of 5.9% through 2035, about 12,400 openings a year and a May 2025 median annual wage of $50,290 (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35; BLS, May 2025 median annual wage). Treat those figures as context for a wider group, not a dialysis wage.

The federal rule that makes this hire easier

Under 42 CFR 494.140(e), patient care dialysis technicians at Medicare-participating facilities must meet all applicable state requirements, have a high school diploma or equivalency, complete a training program approved by the medical director and governing body under the direction of a registered nurse, and be certified under a state program or a national commercially available certification program within 18 months of being hired.

One national option is the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) credential from the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission. NNCC requires a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of a hemodialysis technician training program with classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience, and recommends, but does not require, a minimum of six months (or 1,000 hours) of clinical experience. Several states add their own certification or scope rules, so check your state before writing the requirements line.

The recruiting consequence: if you run an approved training program, you can hire people with a diploma and no dialysis experience. That pool is far larger than the certified technicians already working at the clinic down the road. The dialysis technician job description has a template written this way.

Where to find dialysis technicians

  • CNAs and patient care technicians in hospitals and nursing homes who want a fixed schedule and a technical skill. See our CNA recruitment guide for how that audience responds.
  • Phlebotomists and medical assistants. Needle skills and patient contact transfer directly to cannulation training.
  • EMTs and military medics looking for steadier hours than ambulance work.
  • Allied health students at community colleges who want paid clinical experience before nursing school. Tuition help toward an RN is a strong pitch.
  • Your own technicians. Referral bonuses paid after 90 days work well in a role where current staff know exactly who can handle the schedule.
  • Facebook and Instagram. Most of the people above are not searching for "dialysis technician" because they do not know the job exists. Social ads put the job in front of them. Employment ads run in Meta's Special Ad Category, with no age, gender or ZIP targeting and at least a 15-mile radius.

What to pay, and what to say about it

Because BLS has no dialysis-specific wage, set your range from clinic postings within commuting distance, and state it. Candidates coming from CNA work compare your hourly rate with what they earn now, so show the trainee rate, the rate after certification and any differential for early or Saturday shifts. The pay section of the dialysis technician job description covers the benchmark group in more detail.

How to write the dialysis technician ad

Most readers do not know what a dialysis technician does, so explain it in one sentence, then answer the three things they check first: pay, schedule and training.

  • "Dialysis Technician Trainee, paid training, no dialysis experience needed. CNAs and MAs welcome."
  • "Start at 5 a.m., done by early afternoon. Monday, Wednesday, Friday pattern. New training class starts the first Monday of every month."
  • "We pay for your certification exam and help toward nursing school."

The early start is a dealbreaker for some and the whole appeal for parents who want afternoons free. Say it either way. More examples are in our healthcare job ad templates.

Screening questions for a mobile application

  • Do you have a high school diploma or equivalent? (Knockout: it is a federal requirement.)
  • Which patient care experience do you have: CNA, medical assistant, phlebotomy, EMT, dialysis, or none?
  • Can you work a shift that starts at 5 a.m. and every other Saturday? (Use your real start time.)
  • If you are already certified, which credential do you hold?

Do not knock out on certification unless you genuinely cannot train. Keep the rest for the phone call; our pre-screening questions guide covers what is safe to ask.

Speed and follow-up

Healthcare candidates take the first real offer. Text within minutes of the application, call the same day, and give a concrete next step: an interview time and the date the next training class begins. Boostpoint Connect sends the instant text on apply and runs automated text sequences per job, with a shared inbox so your team can reply from one place. For multi-clinic operators with an XML job feed, Boostpoint Programmatic 2.0 runs one Meta ad per open job, collects screening answers in a quick-apply form, and uploads contact details, answers and a resume-formatted candidate summary to that job in your ATS.

What it costs to recruit dialysis technicians

Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark does not publish a dialysis role family, and none of its fifteen families is defined around dialysis. The report-wide reference is a median campaign cost of $13.88 per applicant, with the middle half of campaigns between $6.48 and $29.74. Because trainee campaigns recruit largely from nursing assistants, the CNA / nursing assistant family is a useful guide to what that audience costs: a $7.72 median per applicant, a middle half of $6.18 to $12.06 and an 18% apply rate. That figure describes CNA campaigns, not dialysis campaigns. All costs are advertising only, and cost per applicant is not cost per hire. See the full benchmark.

Frequently asked questions

How do you recruit dialysis technicians?

Hire trainees rather than only certified technicians, since federal rules allow certification within 18 months of hire after an approved training program. Advertise paid training, the schedule and pay to CNAs, medical assistants and phlebotomists on Facebook and Instagram, keep the application short and call back the same day.

Where can I find dialysis technicians?

Recruit from CNAs, patient care technicians, phlebotomists, medical assistants, EMTs and allied health students, plus referrals from your current technicians. Most of these people are not searching for dialysis jobs, so social ads that explain the role reach them better than job boards.

Do dialysis technicians need to be certified before they are hired?

No. Under 42 CFR 494.140(e), patient care dialysis technicians at Medicare-participating facilities must be certified under a state or national certification program within 18 months of being hired. They also need a high school diploma or equivalency, an approved training program and any state requirements.

What certification do dialysis technicians get?

One national credential is the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) from the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission, which requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a hemodialysis training program with classroom and supervised clinical experience. Some states have their own certification programs.

How much do dialysis technicians make?

BLS does not publish a dialysis technician wage. The broader group it belongs to, health technologists and technicians, all other, had a May 2025 median annual wage of $50,290. Check clinic postings near you before setting a range.

What is the best way to recruit dialysis technicians fast?

Run a standing trainee posting with a named class start date, text applicants within minutes, and schedule interviews within a day or two. A fixed class calendar turns interest into applications because candidates can see exactly when they would start.

How much does it cost to advertise dialysis technician jobs on Facebook?

Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark has no dialysis role family. Across all 891 campaigns the median was $13.88 per applicant. Campaigns for CNAs, the pool most trainees come from, had a $7.72 median. Both are advertising costs only.
