Manufacturing technicians are usually working at another plant or on your own line. Boostpoint runs the Facebook and Instagram ads that reach both.

How to Recruit Manufacturing Technicians: Promote, Poach Politely, and Name the Process
To recruit manufacturing technicians, fish in two ponds at once: strong operators inside your own plant who are ready for the step up, and technicians at other plants within commuting distance. Write the ad around the process and the shift ("process technician, injection molding, days"), show the pay, say what training you provide, keep the mobile application to a few disqualifying questions, and call back the same day. Community college engineering and manufacturing technology programs are the third pond.
Who you are hiring
BLS has no occupation called manufacturing technician. The closest match is industrial engineering technologists and technicians: 76,700 employed in 2025, projected to grow 3.1 percent by 2035, with about 6,600 openings a year (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35). The BLS, May 2025 median annual wage was $66,120, and the typical entry credential BLS lists is an associate's degree.
In practice, plants use "manufacturing technician" and "process technician" for a range of jobs, from an engineering-support role that runs trials and writes procedures to a senior operator who sets up and adjusts the line. Decide which one you mean before you advertise, because the two recruit from different pools and pay differently. The manufacturing technician job description covers both versions.
Where to find manufacturing technicians
- Your own operators. The operator who already troubleshoots the line and trains new hires is often your best technician. Post the role internally with a real training plan before you advertise.
- Technicians and senior operators at nearby plants. They are employed and often not browsing job boards, but they see social ads in their area. Name the process and equipment so the right ones recognize themselves.
- Maintenance technicians who prefer process work. Some want fewer breakdown calls and more improvement work. See maintenance technician recruiting for that audience.
- Community and technical college programs. Engineering technology, mechatronics and manufacturing technology students, especially evening students already working in plants.
- Veterans with technical ratings. Military maintenance and electronics experience often maps well to process and equipment work.
Meta employment ads run in the special ad category, which means no targeting by age, gender or ZIP code and at least a 15-mile radius. For most plants that radius covers the commuting zone you would pick anyway.
What to pay manufacturing technicians
For engineering-support technicians, start from the BLS, May 2025 median of $66,120 for industrial engineering technologists and technicians. For senior-operator technician roles, compare against local operator and maintenance pay instead, since that is who you are competing with. Industry pay detail is on the manufacturing technician job description. Put the range in the ad; a technician at another plant will not apply to find out.
How to write the manufacturing technician ad
The first line needs the title that fits, the process and the shift. The next lines need the pay, the equipment, and what training you give.
Sample headlines. "Process Technician, injection molding, 1st shift, pay range in the ad." / "Operators: step up to Manufacturing Technician. Paid training on setups and SPC." / "Manufacturing Technician, food plant, 4x10 days, we train on GMP."
If you promote operators into the role, say so in the ad; it widens the pool and tells outside candidates there is a ladder. More on structure is in what makes a good job ad.
Training obligations to plan for
Two federal rules shape onboarding for many technician roles. OSHA's lockout/tagout standard, 29 CFR 1910.147, covers servicing and maintenance of machines where unexpected start-up or release of stored energy could cause injury, and requires authorized employees to be trained in recognizing hazardous energy sources and the methods for isolating and controlling them. In drug manufacturing, 21 CFR 211.25 requires each person engaged in manufacturing, processing, packing or holding a drug product to have the education, training and experience, or any combination of them, to perform their assigned functions. Neither rule requires the candidate to arrive trained, so treat them as onboarding tasks, not application knockouts.
Screening questions for the application
- Can you work the posted shift? (Knockout.)
- Which best describes your experience: production operator, setup or process technician, maintenance, engineering technology student, none of these? (Informational.)
- Which processes or equipment have you worked with? (Short multiple choice matched to your plant.)
Skip the resume upload and the long equipment questionnaire. See pre-screening questions for what to leave out.
Speed and follow-up
An employed technician has no pressure to wait for you. Text within minutes, call the same day, and book a plant tour and short practical problem within the week. Text recruiting helps when your HR team covers several shifts.
The first 90 days
Technicians hired from outside know the trade but not your line, and operators promoted from inside know the line but not the technician's job. Plan for both. Give outside hires a week shadowing each shift's lead before they own setups, and give promoted operators a written list of the skills they will be signed off on, with dates and the pay step that follows. Finish the lockout/tagout and any GMP training before either works alone on equipment. A technician who knows exactly what the next pay step requires has a reason to stay for it.
What it costs to recruit manufacturing technicians
In the Technician / mechanic family in Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the median campaign cost $13.41 per applicant, with a middle half of $7.40 to $23.58 and a 16% apply rate. If your role is really a senior operator, the Warehouse / production family is closer: a $9.83 median and a 20% apply rate. Full data is on the benchmarks page. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
Frequently asked questions
How do you recruit manufacturing technicians?
Promote strong operators internally and advertise to technicians at nearby plants at the same time. Name the process, shift and pay in the ad, keep the application short and call back the same day.
Where do you find manufacturing technicians?
Your own senior operators, technicians and operators at other plants in commuting distance, maintenance technicians who want process work, community college engineering and manufacturing technology students, and veterans with technical ratings.
What is the best way to recruit manufacturing technicians from other plants?
Reach them on social media in their commuting area with a specific ad: the process, the equipment, the shift and the pay range. Employed technicians are often not searching job boards, and a vague posting gives them no reason to switch.
How much do manufacturing technicians make?
The closest BLS occupation, industrial engineering technologists and technicians, had a BLS, May 2025 median annual wage of $66,120. Senior-operator technician roles usually track local operator and maintenance pay instead.
Do manufacturing technicians need a certification?
Requirements depend on your industry and state, so check the rules that apply to your plant. Separately, plants must train workers on specific hazards, such as lockout/tagout under 29 CFR 1910.147, and drug manufacturers must meet the personnel training rule in 21 CFR 211.25. Those are employer obligations after hiring.
What should a manufacturing technician job ad say?
The title that fits, the process and equipment, the shift, the pay range and the training you provide. If you promote operators into the role, say so.
How much does it cost to recruit a manufacturing technician on Facebook?
The Technician / mechanic family in Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark had a median of $13.41 per applicant with a middle half of $7.40 to $23.58 and a 16% apply rate. That is cost per applicant, not cost per hire.
