Every state licenses or certifies PTAs, so the pool is limited and most of it is employed. Boostpoint runs Facebook and Instagram job ads that reach working PTAs in the feed, with an application short enough to finish between patients.

How to Recruit Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs)
To recruit physical therapist assistants, build a pipeline from CAPTE-accredited PTA programs through clinical placements, welcome new graduates with a named mentor, and advertise to employed PTAs with the caseload, setting, schedule and pay in the first two lines. State the license requirement exactly, use a mobile form with three or four questions and no resume, and respond the same day.
Who you are actually hiring
A physical therapist assistant delivers the treatment in a physical therapist's plan of care: therapeutic exercise, gait and balance training, transfers, manual techniques and modalities, plus the documentation and patient education that go with them. The PT evaluates and sets the plan; the PTA carries it out and reports back.
BLS Employment Projections 2025-35 count 114,100 physical therapist assistants in 2025 and project 140,400 in 2035, growth of 23.0%, with about 18,500 openings a year. The May 2025 median annual wage was $68,380. According to the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, the largest employers are offices of physical, occupational and speech therapists and audiologists (44%), hospitals (20%) and home healthcare services (12%). Some PTAs work nights and weekends because many clinics have extended hours.
A physical therapist aide is a different hire: BLS lists a high school diploma and short-term on-the-job training as the typical entry route for aides, and their May 2025 median was $35,240. Keep the postings separate.
The license facts your ad has to get right
- Education. BLS says all states require PTAs to have an associate's degree from an accredited program, typically about two years with supervised clinical work.
- License. BLS says all states require PTAs to be licensed or certified, which typically means graduating from an accredited program and passing a qualifying exam. Some states also require a jurisprudence exam, a criminal background check and a minimum age of 18.
- The exam. The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy administers the NPTE. Its eligibility rules require a degree from a CAPTE-accredited institution (or education judged substantially equivalent) and approval by the licensing board in the state where the candidate intends to be licensed.
- Compact privilege. The PT Compact gives PTAs licensed in a member state an alternate way to practice in other compact states through a compact privilege. If your state participates, say so; it widens the pool to relocating clinicians.
Where to find physical therapist assistants
- PTA programs and clinical rotations. Every student in an accredited program completes supervised clinical work. Taking students is the most dependable pipeline you can build, and graduates tend to apply where they trained.
- New graduates. "Two years in SNF required" removes every new graduate from a small licensed pool. If a PT can mentor, say "new grads welcome" and name the mentor.
- PTAs in other settings. Outpatient PTAs who want home health pay, SNF PTAs tired of productivity targets and hospital PTAs who want weekends off all move. Skills transfer faster than postings assume.
- Your own aides and rehab techs. Tuition support toward a PTA program grows a candidate who already knows your clinic.
- State chapters and associations. APTA and its state chapters run career centers and events where practicing PTAs are present.
- Facebook and Instagram. Most PTAs are employed and never open a job board. Social ads reach them between patients, which is why the first line and the form carry the whole campaign.
What to pay physical therapist assistants
Setting drives pay, and PTAs compare it line by line. The wage section of our physical therapist assistant job description covers how settings differ. In the ad, give a range; for home health, give the per-visit rate and mileage; list the sign-on and CEU budget as numbers.
How to write a physical therapist assistant job ad
The line that moves PTA applicants is the caseload, written honestly. Every PTA has worked somewhere that promised one-to-one care and double-booked the schedule. Put these first:
- Setting: outpatient ortho, SNF, home health, acute care, inpatient rehab
- Caseload or productivity as a number, and slot length
- Supervision model: is a PT on site every day?
- Schedule and pay
"PTA, outpatient ortho. 45-minute one-on-one slots, no double-booking, PT on site daily. Mon to Fri, no weekends. Apply in 60 seconds."
"Home health PTA. Per-visit pay plus mileage, set territory, tablet documentation. New grads welcome with a mentor PT."
Employment ads on Meta run in the Employment special ad category: no age, gender or ZIP code targeting and at least a 15-mile radius, so the copy has to do the filtering.
Screening questions for PTA applicants
- Do you hold, or are you eligible for, a PTA license in our state? Knockout, because the job requires it. Add a "new graduate awaiting exam" option if you will consider it.
- Which settings have you worked in? Multiple choice, not a knockout.
- Full-time, part-time or PRN?
- When could you start?
License number, references and transcripts can wait until after the phone screen. A clinician who meets a resume upload, a license upload and a portal account on a phone usually leaves.
Speed and follow-up
Call or text the same day, ideally from the clinic director or supervising PT. Employed PTAs apply in a spare minute between patients and have moved on by evening. If the role stays open, compare the cost of waiting with the agency route on our therapy staffing page.
What it costs to recruit physical therapist assistants on social
PTA hiring falls in the Therapy (PT / OT / SLP) family in Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, which covers therapy roles broadly rather than PTAs alone. It is the most expensive family in the report: median $74.62 per applicant, middle half $44.85 to $171.40, blended $64.12 and a 5% apply rate. The report-wide median was $13.88.
The apply rate is the lever. Across the benchmark, the apply experience explained 70% of cost variation between campaigns; campaigns under a 5% apply rate paid $53.77 per applicant and those at 5-10% paid $23.13. Figures are advertising cost only, and cost per applicant is not cost per hire. See the benchmark.

Frequently asked questions
How do you recruit physical therapist assistants?
Take students from CAPTE-accredited PTA programs, welcome new graduates with a named mentor, and advertise to employed PTAs with caseload, setting, schedule and pay in the first two lines. Keep the mobile application to a few questions and respond the same day.
Where can I find physical therapist assistants?
At PTA programs and their clinical rotations, among new graduates, among PTAs working in other settings, in your own aide and rehab tech staff, through APTA state chapter career centers, and on Facebook and Instagram, where employed PTAs see ads between patients.
Do physical therapist assistants need a license?
Yes. BLS says all states require PTAs to be licensed or certified, typically after graduating from an accredited program and passing a qualifying exam. FSBPT requires NPTE candidates to hold a degree from a CAPTE-accredited institution or substantially equivalent education. Some states add a jurisprudence exam and background check.
How much do physical therapist assistants make?
The BLS May 2025 median annual wage for physical therapist assistants was $68,380. Pay varies by setting; see our PTA job description.
What is the best way to recruit PTAs who already have a job?
Reach them where they already are, in the social feed, with an ad that states caseload and supervision honestly, and let them apply in under a minute without a resume. Then call the same day, ideally from the supervising PT.
What does a PTA applicant cost from social ads?
In Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the Therapy (PT / OT / SLP) family ran a median $74.62 per applicant with a 5% apply rate. A shorter application is the main lever. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
Can PTAs from other states work for me?
If your state is a member of the PT Compact, PTAs licensed in another member state can apply for a compact privilege to practice there. Otherwise they need a license from your state board.
