How to Recruit Plumbing Apprentices: Where to Find Them and What to Say
To recruit plumbing apprentices, advertise a paid path to a license, not a helper job: the starting rate, the raise schedule, who pays for school and the years to journey level. Most candidates work in construction, warehouses, retail or restaurants, or study in trade programs, and few search job boards for "plumbing apprentice," so boards miss them. Reach them with Facebook and Instagram ads and a one-minute mobile application. In Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the Skilled trades family had a median of $14.14 per applicant; plumbing apprentices are not reported separately.
Where to find plumbing apprentices, channel by channel
BLS has no separate apprentice occupation. Under the SOC classification principles, "Apprentices and trainees are classified with the occupations for which they are being trained, while helpers and aides are classified separately." A plumbing apprentice is counted with plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters (SOC 47-2152), and a plumber's helper with helpers—pipelayers, plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters (47-3015). BLS lists a high school diploma as the typical entry education for both.
- Construction laborers and helpers. Already on job sites and often looking for a licensed trade.
- Warehouse, retail, restaurant and delivery workers. A large early-career pool.
- High school and community college trade programs. Instructors know which students show up.
- Pre-apprenticeship programs. Graduates arrive trained on safety and basics. More below.
- Your plumbers' referrals. Pay the bonus in installments once the apprentice has stayed.
Few of these people search job boards for "plumbing apprentice." They are on Facebook and Instagram, and an ad in your service area reaches them there. Meta's Employment special ad category requires a location radius of at least 15 miles and does not allow targeting by age, gender or ZIP code, so the ad's words do the selecting: "no experience needed" and "paid while you learn" bring in career changers and people new to the trades alike. Our apprenticeship recruiting guide covers programs across the trades, and our electrical apprentices and HVAC apprentices guides cover the trades you are competing with.

The plumber median includes apprentices and journey-level plumbers together, so an apprentice's starting rate sits below it and climbs. That climb is the offer. BLS lists apprenticeship as the typical training for both plumbers and electricians, so the electrical contractor down the road is pitching the same candidate. An apprentice candidate compares:
- The starting rate and the raise schedule. Registered programs must have "a progressively increasing schedule of wages" under 29 CFR 29.5; print yours.
- School. Who pays for the classroom hours, and whether they are on the clock.
- Years to journey level and whether you sponsor a registered program.
- Tools and the truck. Supplied or bought, and whether they ride with a journeyworker.
- Work type. New construction, service or commercial, and the start time.
Our plumber job description has a template with the licensing tiers laid out, and the plumber recruiting guide covers journey-level and service plumbers.
The job ad that works: a sample Facebook ad
Lead with the path, not the job.
Sample Facebook ad. Headline: "Plumbing Apprentice: get paid to learn a licensed trade." Text: "No experience needed. You ride with a licensed plumber, we pay for trade school and the tools, and your rate goes up on a posted schedule every year until you test for your license. Weekday schedule. Apply in one minute." Write your actual starting rate, raise steps and start time in the ad body.
Screening: knockout questions for a one-minute apply
- Do you have a high school diploma or equivalent? (Knockout only if your program standards require it.)
- Do you have a valid driver's license? (Knockout only if the apprentice will drive a company vehicle.)
- Can you work in crawl spaces and lift heavy materials? (Knockout only if it is a real job requirement.)
- Have you done any construction, plumbing or maintenance work? (Informational, not a knockout.)
Do not require a résumé; most applicants do not have one that fits. In the Skilled trades family of Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, 15% of clickers finished the form. See pre-screening questions.
State apprentice registration and pre-apprentice programs
Two kinds of registration get confused. The first is a registered apprenticeship program, run under 29 CFR part 29. An apprenticeable occupation requires "at least 2,000 hours of on-the-job learning" (29.4), and 29.5 recommends "a minimum of 144 hours for each year of apprenticeship" of related instruction, with an entry wage no lower than the federal minimum wage where the FLSA applies. Programs are registered by a "Registration agency," which 29.2 defines as the Office of Apprenticeship or a recognized State Apprenticeship Agency, so who you register with depends on your state. Apprenticeship.gov connects employers with an apprenticeship consultant.
The second is state plumbing registration of the individual, which some states require before an unlicensed person does plumbing work. Two examples, checked at source today:
- Texas. The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners says apprentices "MUST register as a Plumber's Apprentice before you can start counting the hours of experience," and hours worked before registration do not count toward the license exams. Direct supervision means a TSBPE licensee "is on the job site with you at all times you are performing plumbing work."
- Minnesota. The Department of Labor and Industry says an unlicensed individual "may only perform plumbing work in Minnesota if they are registered with us as a registered unlicensed plumber (formerly known as an apprentice)," under direct supervision of a licensed master or journeyworker plumber, and as a W-2 employee of a licensed plumbing contractor or registered plumbing employer.
Other states differ. Check your state plumbing board before the start date and tell new hires in the offer how registration works. This is general information, not legal advice.
Pre-apprenticeship is the feeder. The Department of Labor describes it as "a program or set of strategies that is designed to prepare individuals to enter and succeed in a Registered Apprenticeship Program." One of the quality elements on its pre-apprenticeship page is facilitated entry: agreements with sponsors that let graduates enter a program directly. Many programs are housed at high schools and community colleges. Offering interviews to a local program's graduates is a steady channel.

In the Skilled trades family in Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, the median campaign cost $14.14 per applicant, with a middle half of $7.58 to $21.49, a blended cost of $10.74 and a 15% apply rate across 35 campaigns. Boostpoint does not report plumbing apprentices separately. Costs include campaign management and cover advertising only. Full data is on the benchmarks page. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
Frequently asked questions
How do I recruit plumbing apprentices?
Advertise a paid path to a license: the starting rate, the raise schedule, who pays for school and the years to journey level. Run it as a Facebook and Instagram ad in your service area, keep the application to a few mobile questions with no résumé, and text every applicant within minutes.
Where do I find plumbing apprentices to hire?
Among construction laborers and helpers, warehouse, retail, restaurant and delivery workers who want a trade, high school and community college trade programs, pre-apprenticeship programs, and your plumbers' referrals. Few of them search job boards for the title.
What should a plumbing apprentices job ad say?
"No experience needed," the starting hourly rate, the raise steps, who pays for trade school and whether class hours are paid, tools and truck, the type of work, the start time, and a one-minute application. Put the path to a license in the first lines.
How much do plumbing apprentices make?
BLS does not publish an apprentice wage. The May 2025 median was $42,360 for plumbers' helpers and $63,800 for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters, which includes apprentices. An apprentice's rate starts below the plumber median and rises on the program's wage schedule.
How long does it take to hire plumbing apprentices?
Most of the time is in your response. Text applicants within minutes, interview within two days and set a start date. In states that require individual registration, such as Texas, build in time for the apprentice to register before counting hours.
