An industrial maintenance mechanic keeps production equipment running. When a line goes down, they find out why and fix it; when it is running, they do the planned maintenance that stops it going down again. The job mixes mechanical repair (bearings, gearboxes, chains, conveyors, pumps), fluid power (hydraulics and pneumatics), a working knowledge of electrical controls, and enough welding and fabrication to make a part when the right one is not on the shelf.

The software O*NET names is telling: programmable logic controller (PLC) software, SCADA, maintenance planning and control software, and SAP. Most plants now expect a mechanic to read a PLC’s status to find which sensor or interlock stopped the machine, even if an electrician or controls technician makes program changes. Say in your posting which of those your role actually involves.

BLS adds the schedule: most work full time during regular hours, “however, mechanics may be on call and work night or weekend shifts. Discrete manufacturing
Manufacturing employs 51 percent of the occupational group and pays the highest median in BLS’s industry table, $65,220. Name the machine types, how automated the plant is and the ratio of PM to breakdown work.
Food and beverage
Add sanitation, washdown equipment and food safety rules. Say whether the role covers third-shift sanitation support, because it often does.
Distribution centers
Conveyors, sorters and material handling equipment dominate. Peak-season overtime is predictable, so state it.
Multi-craft and field roles
Wholesale trade employs 13 percent of the group and machinery repair and maintenance services 11 percent. If your mechanics travel to customer sites, say how far, how often and whether a truck is provided. If the role covers electrical as well as mechanical work, title it as multi-craft and pay for it.
Interview questions for an industrial maintenance mechanic
A good maintenance interview is mostly troubleshooting walk-throughs. Use the same questions and the same scoring for every candidate, with an interview scorecard. There is a longer set on maintenance technician interview questions.
1. A conveyor keeps tripping its motor overload. Walk me through how you find the cause.
A good answer is systematic: lock out, check for mechanical binding, worn bearings, chain or belt tension, product jams, then amp draw and the overload setting. Weak answers go straight to resetting or upsizing the overload.
2. A hydraulic cylinder is drifting under load. What could cause it and how do you check?
Listens for internal seal bypass, a leaking valve or check valve, and a test to tell them apart. Mentions safety with stored pressure.
3. How do you use a PLC or HMI when a machine stops?
Reads the fault, checks inputs and outputs to find which sensor or interlock is not made, then fixes the physical cause. They should know where their skills end and when to call controls.
4. Tell me about a repeat failure you eliminated for good.
The best mechanics talk about root cause: alignment, lubrication, a design change, a PM adjusted. It separates a fixer from a preventer.
5. Describe your lockout/tagout process on a machine with more than one energy source.
Names every source (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, gravity, stored energy), verifies zero energy and tries the start. Any shortcut is a disqualifier.
6. What tools do you own, and what equipment are you strongest on?
Practical and honest. It also tells you how long they will take to be productive on your lines.

Industrial machinery mechanics had a median wage of $64,520 a year, or $31.02 an hour, in May 2025. Millwrights had a median of $65,700 and machinery maintenance workers $60,850. Across the whole group the lowest 10 percent earned less than $45,760 and the highest 10 percent more than $94,530. BLS publishes the industry breakdown for the group as a whole:
