How to Recruit Drywall Installers: Hire Helpers, Show the Pay Math, Keep Crews Through Winter

To recruit drywall installers, say exactly how pay works (hourly, by the board or by the square foot, with what a typical week looks like), name the project type and area, and say whether work runs year-round. Most hangers learn on the job, so advertise for helpers you will train alongside experienced hangers. Reach both on Facebook and Instagram, where working tradespeople scroll, let them apply in two questions without a resume, and call back the same day, because crews fill fast.

Who you are actually hiring

BLS counts the role as drywall and ceiling tile installers (SOC 47-2081), which includes drywall hangers, sheetrock installers and acoustical ceiling installers. There were 102,200 in 2025, projected to reach 104,700 by 2035 (a 2.5% change), with about 6,600 openings a year. The May 2025 median annual wage was $58,930. BLS lists no formal educational credential as typical for entry and moderate-term on-the-job training (BLS Employment Projections 2025-35; BLS, May 2025 median annual wage).

Finishing is a separate occupation. Tapers (47-2082) numbered 15,800 with a May 2025 median of $68,270. Drywall hanger and taper helpers sit in helpers, construction trades, all other (47-3019), a group of 25,200 with a $42,670 median. If your posting says "drywall installer" but the job is mostly tape and mud, finishers will read your pay line against the higher taper figure. Post the two roles separately, or name both skills and pay for both. The drywall installer job description covers duties and requirements.

Where to find drywall installers

  • Helpers and laborers you can train. The BLS Handbook says most installers learn by helping experienced workers, typically with up to 12 months of on-the-job training, so your best future hanger may be a construction laborer, warehouse worker or framer's helper today. "Helpers welcome, we train" is one of the simplest ways to widen the pool.
  • Hangers on other crews. They are working, not job hunting. They switch for steadier work, better pay math, weekly pay or less travel.
  • Independent hangers. The BLS Handbook puts about 19% of installers and tapers in self-employment. Year-round work, equipment they do not have to buy and benefits are the reasons to join a crew.
  • Adjacent trades. Framers, metal stud framers, insulation installers and painters already work around drywall.
  • Crew referrals. Hangers know other hangers. Pay the bonus after 90 days on the job.
  • Facebook and Instagram. The quickest way to reach working tradespeople in your area. Employment ads run in Meta's Special Ad Category, with no age, gender or ZIP targeting and at least a 15-mile radius.
  • Job boards. Useful for the smaller share who are actively looking. Our construction job boards guide compares them.

What to pay drywall installers, and how to show it

Use the $58,930 installer median as a reference and check what contractors near you post. The more important choice is how you present pay. If you pay by the board or by the square foot, show what a typical week looks like for an experienced hanger on your jobs. If you pay hourly, say so plainly; plenty of hangers are looking for exactly that. Add travel pay, weekly pay and what you supply (lifts, stilts, screw guns). The pay section of the drywall installer job description breaks the wage down by industry.

How to write a drywall installer ad

A hanger reads the first line for three things: pay type, project type and whether the work lasts. Sample headlines:

  • "Drywall Hangers, commercial metal stud and board, $28 to $34 an hour, year-round work, paid weekly."
  • "Drywall Helper, no experience needed. We train you to hang. Tools and rides to site provided."
  • "Residential Drywall Crew Lead. Piece rate with a typical week shown. Work within 30 miles."

Swap in your real numbers. State the physical demands honestly: standing all day, lifting board and working from ladders, scaffolds or lifts. More on the copy itself is in our job ad copywriting guide.

Screening questions for a mobile application

  • How many years have you hung drywall? (None, under 1, 1 to 3, more than 3.)
  • Mostly commercial, residential or both?
  • Do you also tape and finish?
  • Do you have reliable transportation to job sites within our area? (Knockout only if you do not provide rides.)

Do not ask for a resume. Tradespeople scrolling on a break will answer four taps; they will not build a document. A short phone call and a day on the crew tell you more.

Speed and follow-up

Crews fill fast and hangers say yes to whoever calls first. Text within minutes and call the same day. Boostpoint Connect sends an instant text when someone applies, runs automated text sequences per job and gives your office a shared inbox for replies. If you post many openings through an ATS, Boostpoint Programmatic 2.0 turns your XML job feed into one Meta ad per job and uploads each applicant's contact details, screening answers and a resume-formatted candidate summary to that job in your ATS.

What it costs to recruit drywall installers

Drywall installers fall within the Skilled trades family in Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark: a median of $14.14 per applicant, a middle half of $7.58 to $21.49, a blended $10.74 and a 15% apply rate. That family covers many trades, so treat it as a range, not a drywall-specific price. The report-wide median is $13.88. The apply experience explains 70% of the variation between campaigns, and campaigns with apply rates of 10% to 20% paid $11.11 per applicant against $4.41 for 20% to 35%. Costs are advertising only, and an applicant is not a hire. See the full benchmark.

Keeping hangers through the slow season

An experienced hanger can always go independent. Steady winter work, weekly pay, equipment they do not have to buy and a path to crew lead are what keep them. For the wider crew, see how to recruit construction workers and our skilled trades recruiting hub.

Frequently asked questions

How do you recruit drywall installers?

Show how pay works, including a typical week if you pay by the board or square foot, name the project type and area, say whether work runs year-round, and advertise for helpers you will train as well as experienced hangers. Reach them on Facebook and Instagram, keep the application to a few taps and call back the same day.

Where can I find drywall installers?

Recruit hangers on other crews, independent hangers, helpers and laborers you can train, and adjacent trades such as framers, insulation installers and painters. Crew referrals and social ads reach working tradespeople who are not on job boards.

What is the best way to recruit drywall hangers?

Lead with pay type and range, project type and year-round work, and let hangers apply without a resume. Experienced hangers switch for steadier work, better pay math and less travel, so say which of those you offer.

How much do drywall installers make?

BLS reports a May 2025 median annual wage of $58,930 for drywall and ceiling tile installers. Tapers, who finish the joints, had a higher median of $68,270. Pay also depends on whether you pay hourly or by piece rate.

Do drywall installers need a license or certification?

BLS lists no formal educational credential as typical for entry, and the BLS Handbook says most installers learn on the job by helping experienced workers, typically with up to 12 months of training. Apprenticeships typically last 2 to 4 years. Requirements vary by state, so check your state's rules before listing any credential.

How much does it cost to recruit a drywall installer on Facebook?

In Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the Skilled trades family had a median of $14.14 per applicant, a middle half of $7.58 to $21.49 and a 15% apply rate. These are advertising costs only; cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
