How to Recruit Metal Fabricators: Name the Work, Show the Pay, Book the Weld Test

To recruit metal fabricators, advertise the actual work: what you build, which materials, which processes and what equipment is on the floor. Put pay, shift and overtime in the first line of a local Facebook or Instagram ad, say there is a short fit-up and weld test instead of demanding paper certifications, ask three or four questions on a mobile form and book the test on the first call. Grow welder helpers and trade school graduates into the role alongside.

Who you are hiring

"Metal fabricator" covers several BLS occupations, and the one you mean decides who you recruit. Structural shops hire from structural metal fabricators and fitters. Job shops that want the fabricator to weld out their own work recruit from the much larger welding pool. HVAC and architectural shops often mean sheet metal work.

Structural fabrication is small and projected to shrink, but a shrinking occupation still has openings as experienced people retire or move. For a welder fabricator, the welding row is the real pool. The metal fabricator job description has a template for both versions.

Where to find metal fabricators

  • Fabricators and welders at other shops. The most qualified candidates are employed. They respond to specific offers (better shift, more overtime, cleaner work, newer equipment), and they see local social ads while not searching job boards.
  • Welders who want to fit and build. Production welders on a repetitive line often want to read prints and build whole assemblies. Say that the job includes layout and fit-up.
  • Welding and fabrication school graduates. Community college and trade school programs produce candidates who can pass a basic weld test and need shop time. Pair them with a lead fabricator.
  • Your own helpers. A welder helper who has been fitting under supervision for a year is a fabricator in progress. Put the step in writing.
  • Adjacent trades. Machinists, millwrights and maintenance welders from plants that are cutting hours.

For the longer view on building a pipeline, see apprenticeship and trade school recruiting. Meta employment ads run in the special ad category: no targeting by age, gender or ZIP code, and at least a 15-mile radius.

What to pay metal fabricators

Check both the fabricator and welder medians above against what shops near you post; a welder fabricator will compare you with the local welding rate, not the national fabricator number. Overtime is part of pay in this trade, so say how much is typical. The wage section of the metal fabricator job description has more detail.

Weld tests versus certification

No federal license is required to work as a fabricator. Welding certifications exist, and some codes, customers and contracts require a specific qualification for specific work. The AWS Certified Welder Program, for example, is performance based, tested at AWS Accredited Test Facilities, has no education or experience prerequisites, and requires maintenance documentation every six months confirming the welder still performs the certified process. Unless your work requires a named qualification, a short fit-up and weld test in your own shop tells you more and loses fewer applicants than requiring a certificate on the application.

How to write the metal fabricator ad

Sample headlines. "Fabricator/Fitter, structural steel, days, overtime available, [your range]." / "Welder fabricator: build the whole assembly, not one bead. MIG and TIG, stainless and aluminum." / "Weld test takes 45 minutes. Pass it and start next week."

Name the materials, processes and equipment (brake, shear, plasma table, rolls). A fabricator reads that list to decide whether the shop is a step up.

Screening questions for the application

  • Can you work the posted shift? (Knockout.)
  • Which welding processes do you use: MIG, TIG, stick, flux core, none yet? (Informational.)
  • Can you read shop drawings and lay out parts from them? (Yes, somewhat, learning.)
  • Are you available for a weld test in the next week?

Skip the resume upload and the list of every machine you own. See pre-screening questions.

Speed and follow-up

A fabricator who is looking can apply to several shops in one evening, and the first shop to call often gets the test. Text within minutes, call the next morning, and book the weld test on that first call. The 72-hour sequence for skilled trades lays out the timing.

The first 90 days

A new fabricator judges the shop on three things early: whether the work matches the ad, whether the equipment works, and whether someone answers questions about your drawings and tolerances. Pair each new hire with a lead for the first few jobs, start them on assemblies close to what they did in the test, and write down what earns the next pay step, such as a new process, a harder material or running jobs without a check. Helpers promoted into the role need the same list, with dates.

What it costs to recruit metal fabricators

In the Skilled trades family in Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the median campaign cost $14.14 per applicant, with a middle half of $7.58 to $21.49, a blended $10.74 and a 15% apply rate. Across all 891 campaigns, the apply experience explained 70% of cost variation, which is why a short form matters in a trade with a 15% apply rate. Full data is on the benchmarks page, and welding-specific hiring math is in welder shortage and recruiting. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire.

Frequently asked questions

How do you recruit metal fabricators?

Run a local social ad that names the work, materials, processes and equipment, with pay, shift and overtime in the first line. Replace certification requirements with a short weld test, keep the application to a few questions and book the test on the first call.

Where can I find metal fabricators?

Fabricators and welders at other shops, production welders who want to fit and build, welding school graduates, your own welder helpers, and machinists or maintenance welders from nearby plants.

Do metal fabricators need to be certified?

No federal license is required. Certain codes, customers or contracts require specific welding qualifications. Otherwise a weld test in your shop is a better screen than a certificate requirement on the application.

What is the AWS Certified Welder Program?

It is a performance-based certification from the American Welding Society, tested at AWS Accredited Test Facilities with no education or experience prerequisites. Holders submit maintenance documentation every six months, according to AWS.

How much do metal fabricators make?

BLS, May 2025 median annual wages were $51,330 for structural metal fabricators and fitters, $53,750 for welders, cutters, solderers and brazers, and $61,800 for sheet metal workers. Compare against local shop rates before setting a range.

What screening questions should a fabricator application ask?

Shift availability, which welding processes they use, whether they read shop drawings, and availability for a weld test. Keep the processes and drawings questions informational so trainees are not screened out.

How much does it cost to recruit a metal fabricator with Facebook ads?

The Skilled trades family in Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark had a median of $14.14 per applicant with a middle half of $7.58 to $21.49 and a 15% apply rate. That is cost per applicant, not cost per hire.
