How to Recruit Welder Helpers: The Path to Welder Is the Pitch
To recruit welder helpers, advertise the path to welder, not just the helper job: say how you train, how long it usually takes, what the weld test is and what the pay becomes. Recruit from warehouse, farm and production workers and from school welding programs, drop welding experience as a requirement, keep the application to three or four questions on a phone, and call back the same day, because entry-level candidates take the first real offer.
Who you are actually hiring
BLS does not publish figures for welder helpers as a title. "Welder Helper" is listed as an example title under helpers, production workers (SOC 51-9198), a broad group that also covers machine and production helpers. That occupation had 167,400 workers in 2025 in the BLS Employment Projections 2025-35, is projected to fall 8.2 percent to 153,600 by 2035, and still produces about 20,900 openings a year. Its May 2025 median annual wage was $39,070, with a high school diploma or equivalent and short-term on-the-job training as the typical entry path.
The job a helper is working toward is bigger. Welders, cutters, solderers and brazers (SOC 51-4121) had 437,700 workers in 2025, about 40,300 openings a year projected, and a May 2025 median of $53,750. That gap between the two medians is your recruiting message. A candidate choosing between a helper job and a warehouse job at similar pay picks the one with a visible way up.
Where to find welder helpers
- Warehouse, production and farm workers. They already work physical shifts, often run forklifts or equipment, and many would move for a trade. They are not searching "welder helper," which is why social ads that reach them in their feed work better than a job board post.
- High school shop and career-tech programs, and community college welding courses. Students near the end of a welding course want hours under a hood. Ask instructors when their cohorts finish and advertise before that date.
- Your own welders. Welders know who can grind and fit. A referral bonus paid after the helper's first 90 days turns your crew into recruiters.
- Construction laborers and mechanics' helpers. Material handling, rigging and tool sense transfer directly.
- Veterans. Veterans from military maintenance and engineering jobs often bring shop and tool experience. See hiring veterans.
If your helper program is formal, apprenticeship recruiting covers turning it into a grow track, and welder shortage and recruiting covers the welder hire itself.
What to pay welder helpers
Use the $39,070 BLS median for helpers, production workers only as a reference point; it is a broad group. Check shops near you and set a rate that beats local warehouse work, because that is the job you are competing with. The welder helper job description has the full pay section. Then publish the raise schedule tied to skills: what a helper earns after passing a tack test, a fit-up signoff or a weld certification.
How to write the welder helper ad
The ad is read on a phone by someone who has never set foot in your shop. Answer the three things this candidate checks first: the pay, the shift, and whether you will teach them to weld.
Sample ad. "Welder Helper, day shift, Monday to Friday. Starting hourly pay in the first line, and the raise after you pass our weld test. No welding experience needed: our welders train you on fit-up, grinding and tacking, and helpers who pass the test move up to welder. PPE provided. Apply in one minute, we call back today."
- Say what the shop builds. Trailers, tanks, structural steel and equipment frames sound different to a candidate than "fabrication."
- Name the conditions honestly: heat, noise, sparks, heavy steel. People who know what they are walking into stay longer.
- Use a real photo of your floor and your welders.
- Write for everyone in your area. Meta employment ads run in a special ad category: no targeting by age, gender or ZIP code, and at least a 15-mile radius.
Screening questions for a mobile application
- Can you work our posted shift, Monday through Friday? (knockout)
- Are you able to work a full shift on your feet in a hot, loud shop wearing full protective equipment? (knockout; it is the job)
- Do you have a valid driver's license? (only for field crews who drive to sites)
- Have you taken any welding classes or used a grinder or torch? (sorting only, never a knockout)
Do not require a forklift card up front. OSHA's rule at 29 CFR 1910.178(l) puts the training, evaluation and certification of each powered industrial truck operator on the employer, so you train and certify after hire anyway; our OSHA forklift training guide has the detail. If the job needs a respirator, say that you provide it. Under 29 CFR 1910.134, the employer provides the medical evaluation before fit testing or use, fit tests tight-fitting respirators at least annually, and provides respirators, training and medical evaluations at no cost to the employee.
Speed and the first 90 days
Entry-level applicants apply to several jobs in one evening. Text them within minutes, offer a shop tour and interview in the same visit, and give a start date on the spot when you can. After hire, pair each helper with one welder, not a rotating cast, and show them the skills checklist on day one so the path in your ad is real.
What it costs to reach welder helpers
The closest role family in Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark is warehouse / production. Across Boostpoint-managed campaigns on Meta, the Warehouse / production family ran a median of $9.83 per applicant, a middle half of $3.15 to $18.72, a blended $4.44 and a 20 percent apply rate. For comparison, the Skilled trades family ran a $14.14 median. The all-campaign median was $13.88. The apply experience explains 70 percent of cost variation between campaigns, so a short form with no resume requirement matters more than any bid. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire. Frequently asked questions
How do you recruit welder helpers?
Advertise the path to welder: how you train, how long it takes and what the pay becomes. Recruit warehouse, farm and production workers and welding students, drop welding experience as a requirement, use a short mobile application and call back the same day.
Where can I find welder helpers?
Among warehouse, production and farm workers, high school and community college welding students, construction laborers, veterans with shop experience, and referrals from your own welders. Social ads reach the many who are not searching job boards for the title.
How much should I pay a welder helper?
BLS does not publish a welder helper wage. Helpers, production workers had a May 2025 median of $39,070 a year, but it is a broad group. Set a rate that beats local warehouse work and publish the raise schedule tied to skills. See the welder helper job description.
Should a welder helper job require welding experience?
No. BLS lists short-term on-the-job training as typical for production helpers. Requiring welding experience turns the posting into an underpaid welder job and shrinks the pool. List welding coursework as a plus instead.
Does a welder helper need a forklift certification?
Not before hire. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l), the employer must train, evaluate and certify each powered industrial truck operator, so train and certify helpers after they start.
What screening questions should a welder helper application ask?
Keep knockouts to shift availability and the physical reality of the job, add a driver's license question only for field crews, and ask about welding classes or grinder and torch use as a sorting question rather than a knockout.
How much does it cost to recruit a welder helper on Facebook?
The Warehouse / production family in Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the closest fit, ran a median of $9.83 per applicant with a 20 percent apply rate. That is cost per applicant, not cost per hire.
