How to Hire Cashiers: Where to Find Them, and Why the Ad Is Two Lines
To hire cashiers, put the hourly pay and the open shifts in the first line of the ad, name the store location, and let people apply in about a minute from a phone. Find cashiers among local students, parents looking for school-hour shifts, older workers, past employees and past applicants, and people who already shop with you. Screen only for availability and any age requirement your state sets for age-restricted sales, then text back the same day.
Who you are hiring
Cashiers (SOC 41-2011) are one of the largest occupations in the country. The BLS Employment Projections 2025-35 count 3,106,300 cashiers in 2025, projected to decline 6.5 percent to 2,905,700 by 2035 as self-checkout and online ordering take volume. Even so, BLS projects about 521,300 openings a year, all from replacing people who move to other jobs or leave the workforce. The May 2025 median annual wage was $32,880. No formal credential is typical, and training is short-term on the job.
So the cashier seat is not going away; it keeps coming open. And the job has changed. With self-checkout handling routine baskets in many stores, the cashier you hire now handles the exceptions: age checks, returns, price overrides and the self-checkout lane when it flags a problem. Hire for calm, accuracy and honesty at the drawer.
Where to find cashiers
The most useful answer to "where to find cashiers" is: close to your store. Cashier candidates choose by commute far more than by brand, so every channel below is local.
- High school and college students. They want part-time evening and weekend hours, which is often exactly what you need. Know the youth rules below before you schedule anyone under 16.
- Parents who want school-hour shifts. A posted 9am to 2pm shift reaches a group a "flexible availability required" posting never sees.
- Older workers and retirees. Many want a few steady daytime shifts and bring the patience a register needs. See how to recruit older workers.
- Past employees, seasonal hires and past applicants. The cheapest cashier is the one who already knows your registers. Text last season's hires and the applicants you never got to. Re-engaging past applicants covers segments and consent.
- Your customers. A sign at the register and a receipt message with a QR code to a short application reach people who already walk in.
- Referrals. Pay a bonus after the new hire's first 60 or 90 days.
- Social ads. Most people who would take a cashier job are not searching a job board today. Facebook and Instagram ads reach them in their feed within a few miles of the store.
How to recruit cashiers: the ad is two lines
Cashier candidates compare several openings at once and filter on two things: the hourly rate and whether the shifts fit their life. If those two facts are not in the first line, the reader scrolls on.
Sample headlines. "Cashiers wanted at our Main Street store: evening and weekend shifts, pay rate in this ad, apply in one minute." / "School-hours cashier shifts, 9am to 2pm, weekdays." / "Part-time cashier, schedule posted two weeks ahead, employee discount from day one."
- Pay. The actual starting rate, and when it is reviewed.
- Shifts. The real open shifts, not "flexible availability."
- Location. Name the store or cross streets. People apply to a commute.
- What the role includes. If it carries a sign-up quota for a store card or loyalty program, say so; hiding it causes early quits.
- Solo shifts and cash safety. For convenience stores and gas stations, say whether the cashier works alone and how cash drops work.
Write the social version for everyone in your area: Meta employment ads run in a special ad category with no targeting by age, gender or ZIP code and a minimum 15-mile radius. The cashier job description is the full document for your files.
What to pay cashiers
The BLS median of $32,880 a year is a national figure across every kind of store. Cashier candidates compare you with the grocery store, the fast food counter and the warehouse nearby, so check their current postings and set the rate against those. The cashier job description has the full pay picture. Small non-wage items move this audience: a posted schedule two weeks out, an employee discount, shift swaps by app, and a raise date stated in the ad.
Screening questions for a cashier application
- Which of these shifts can you work? (multiple choice; knockout only for shifts you truly need)
- When can you start?
- If the role sells alcohol, tobacco or lottery: are you at least the age our state requires for the cashier making those sales? (knockout; the minimum age varies by state, so check yours)
- Have you handled a cash drawer or a register before? (sorting only)
That is enough. Math tests, personality quizzes and resume uploads mostly remove good applicants; the register does the arithmetic. Test accuracy and customer manner in the interview. The cashier interview questions page has what to ask and what good answers sound like.
Hiring 14 and 15 year olds as cashiers
Federal rules list cashiering and selling among the jobs 14 and 15 year olds may do (29 CFR 570.34). Their hours are limited to 3 hours on a school day and 18 hours in a school week, 8 hours on a non-school day and 40 in a non-school week, and only between 7am and 7pm, extended to 9pm from June 1 through Labor Day (29 CFR 570.35). The Department of Labor notes that where a state child labor law is more restrictive than federal law, the state law applies. Build the schedule before you make the offer.
The best way to recruit cashiers: answer first
A cashier applicant who applies to you at 9pm has probably applied to two other stores the same evening. The store that texts first usually gets the interview. Send a text within minutes that offers two interview times, run short interviews at set hours, and make the offer on the spot when the interview goes well. Our guide to on-the-spot hiring and walk-in interviews covers how to run that day.
Then keep them. Early cashier exits usually trace back to the schedule: shifts that did not match what the ad promised, or a schedule posted too late to plan a life around. The ad is the first retention promise you make.
Seasonal cashier hiring
Holiday and summer peaks turn a steady trickle of cashier openings into a batch. Plan backwards from the date the extra registers need to be staffed: start the ads several weeks early, run one campaign for all the seasonal shifts rather than a string of rushed postings, and tell seasonal hires in the ad whether strong performers are offered a permanent spot. That last line brings in people who want a foot in the door, not just holiday cash. Peak season staffing covers the timing in detail.
What it costs to recruit cashiers on social
Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark has no cashier role family, but it does report by sector. The Retail / Corporate sector ran a median cost per applicant of $8.58 on Meta, a middle half of $3.72 to $17.76, a blended $3.66 and a 26 percent apply rate, the tightest cost band of any sector in the study. That is a sector figure covering many roles, not a cashier-only number. Across all 891 campaigns the median was $13.88. The apply experience explains 70 percent of cost variation between campaigns, so a short form is the cheapest lever you have. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire. Frequently asked questions
How do you hire cashiers?
Put the pay and open shifts in the first line of the ad, name the store location, use a one-minute mobile application, screen only for availability and any state age requirement for age-restricted sales, and text applicants back the same day with interview times.
Where can I find cashiers?
Near your store: local students, parents who want school-hour shifts, older workers, past employees and seasonal hires, past applicants, your own customers and employee referrals. Facebook and Instagram ads reach the many who are not searching job boards.
What is the best way to recruit cashiers?
Be specific and fast. An ad that states pay and shifts, a short form, and a text within minutes of applying win most cashier hires, because applicants usually apply to several stores at once.
How much do cashiers make?
The BLS median annual wage for cashiers was $32,880 in May 2025. Set your rate against the grocery, fast food and warehouse postings near your store. The cashier job description has more detail.
Can 14 and 15 year olds work as cashiers?
Yes, under federal rules, which list cashiering among permitted jobs. Hours are limited to 3 on a school day and 18 in a school week, between 7am and 7pm (9pm from June 1 through Labor Day). Where a state law is more restrictive, it applies.
What screening questions should a cashier application ask?
Shift availability, start date, and, if the role sells alcohol, tobacco or lottery, whether the applicant meets the age your state requires for those sales. Register experience works as a sorting question, not a knockout.
Do cashiers need experience?
No. BLS lists no formal credential and short-term on-the-job training as typical. Hire for reliability, accuracy and customer manner, and train on your register.
How much does it cost to recruit a cashier on Facebook?
Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark has no cashier role family. The Retail / Corporate sector ran a median of $8.58 per applicant with a 26 percent apply rate. That is cost per applicant, not cost per hire.
How long does it take to hire a cashier?
Usually as long as your own follow-up takes, because cashiering needs no license and training is short-term on the job. The clock is set by how fast you text back, how soon you can interview, and whether the manager can make the offer on the spot. Stores that text within minutes with two interview times and hold short interviews at set hours can often move from application to offer quickly; stores that reply days later lose applicants to the store that answered first. Hiring minors can add steps: federal hour limits shape the schedule, and some states require an employment or age certificate before a minor starts work, as the Department of Labor's state age certificate table shows. Boostpoint does not publish a time-to-hire figure.
