Package handler candidates choose between several short-shift jobs at once, and the one that answers first usually wins. Boostpoint runs Facebook and Instagram job ads that lead with the shift and the rate, with an application that takes about a minute.

How to Recruit Package Handlers for Every Sort
To recruit package handlers, lead with the shift and the pay: the sort, the start time, the usual finish, weekly hours and the hourly rate. State the heaviest lift honestly. Recruit students, second-job holders and retail stockroom workers, not only people with warehouse experience, and use a two-minute mobile application that asks about start time, lifting and commute. Then contact every applicant the same day, because they applied to three other buildings that morning.
Who you are actually hiring
Package handlers unload trailers, scan and sort parcels to the right chute or door, and load delivery vehicles or outbound trailers. BLS classifies the work within laborers and freight, stock, and material movers, hand (SOC 53-7062), which also covers loaders, material handlers and many warehouse workers. BLS Employment Projections 2025-35 put that occupation at 2,940,300 jobs in 2025, growth of 1.8% to 2035, and about 340,500 openings a year. The May 2025 median annual wage was $40,240, across all industries.
The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook adds three facts that shape recruiting. There are usually no formal educational requirements, and training on the job lasts a month or less. Part-time work is common and schedules may include nights and weekends. And hand laborers and freight, stock, and material movers, the group that includes package handlers, have some of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations. Retail trade is the largest employer of the broader group (35%), ahead of transportation and warehousing (22%), so a store backroom and a parcel hub are hiring from the same pool.
Where to find package handlers
- Students. A 4am preload that ends before a 9am class is one of the few jobs that fits a full course load. Community college and university job boards are worth posting on before each semester.
- Second-job holders. A twilight or overnight sort fits around a daytime job. Say the finish time plainly so they can check it against the other shift.
- Retail stockroom and grocery workers. They already unload trucks and work early. Your rate and a fixed schedule are the pitch.
- Delivery and gig drivers. People who drive routes in the day know the parcel business and sometimes want steady hours with benefits.
- Last peak's seasonal hires. Anyone who finished a peak season with you in good standing is a warm candidate. Keep their numbers and text them first.
- Employee referrals. Handlers bring friends who work the same hours. Pay the bonus after a set number of shifts worked, and tell people what it is.
- Facebook and Instagram. Most people who would take a sort job are not searching "package handler". Social ads with the rate and shift in the headline reach them where they already are.
What to pay package handlers
Your real competition is the hub or distribution center a few miles away, not the national figure. The wage section of our package handler job description shows how parcel and warehouse industries compare with the all-industry median. In the ad, put the base rate and any overnight or weekend premium as numbers, and say how often you pay. Weekly pay is worth mentioning when you offer it.
How to write a package handler job ad
Answer the three questions a candidate checks in the first two lines: how much, what shift, where. Then add the things that cause early quits when they are left out:
- The start time and the usual finish, and whether the finish moves with volume
- Typical weekly hours, because a short sort can run well under full time
- The heaviest parcel weight, as a number
- Whether the building or the trailers get hot or cold
- Peak season dates and whether extra hours are required
"Package Handler, $21/hr. 4am to 8:30am, Mon to Fri, done before lunch. No experience, we train you on the floor. Apply in 60 seconds, no resume."
"Twilight sort, 5pm to 10pm. Weekly pay. Lift up to 50 lbs. Full-time paths after 90 days."
Use your own rate, hours and weight in place of these examples. More worked ads are in our help wanted ad examples. On Meta, employment ads run in the Employment special ad category: no targeting by age, gender or ZIP code, and at least a 15-mile radius.
Screening questions for package handlers
- Can you start at 4:00am, Monday to Friday? Use your own start time. Knockout: it is the job.
- Can you lift and move packages up to 50 lbs repeatedly through the shift, with or without reasonable accommodation? Use your real weight.
- How will you get to the building for a 4am start? Multiple choice. Public transit may not run at that hour, which is a no-show risk worth knowing.
- When could you start?
Drop the high school diploma and the resume upload. BLS lists no formal educational credential for this work, and each extra field costs completions. See pre-screening questions for what to leave out.
The best way to recruit package handlers: answer first
Package handler applicants move fast and apply to several buildings at once. Text each one within minutes, offer an interview slot or orientation date in that first message, and remind them the day before. Hubs that run open hiring or same-week orientation should say so in the ad. For surges, plan backwards from the date with our peak season staffing guide.
What it costs to recruit package handlers on social
Package handling is warehouse floor work, so the Warehouse / production family in Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark (891 Boostpoint-managed campaigns on Meta) is a genuine fit. The family's median cost per applicant was $9.83, with the middle half of campaigns between $3.15 and $18.72, a blended figure of $4.44 and a 20% apply rate. The report-wide median was $13.88.
The width of that band is mostly the form. Across the benchmark, the apply experience explained 70% of cost variation between campaigns, and campaigns converting 20% to 35% of clicks paid $4.41 per applicant. Figures are advertising cost only, and cost per applicant is not cost per hire. See the benchmark and the warehouse recruiting playbook.
The first 90 days
Early package handler turnover usually traces back to a schedule or workload the ad did not describe, and to the physical shock of the first week. Tell new hires what the first shifts will feel like, pair them with an experienced handler, and check in after the first week. If you also hire for the rest of the dock, see how to recruit material handlers and how to recruit dock workers.
Frequently asked questions
How do you recruit package handlers?
Lead the ad with the shift start and finish, weekly hours and hourly rate, state the heaviest lift, and recruit students, second-job holders and retail workers as well as warehouse veterans. Use a short mobile application and contact applicants the same day.
Where can I find package handlers?
Among students who want an early shift that ends before class, second-job holders, retail stockroom and grocery workers, delivery drivers, former seasonal hires, employee referrals, and people reached by Facebook and Instagram ads that name the rate and shift.
How much do package handlers make?
BLS places package handlers within laborers and freight, stock, and material movers, hand, whose May 2025 median annual wage was $40,240 across all industries. Pay in parcel and warehouse industries differs from that all-industry figure; see the wage section of our package handler job description.
Do package handlers need experience?
No. BLS says there are usually no formal educational requirements for hand laborers and material movers, and on-the-job training lasts a month or less. Listing warehouse experience as preferred rather than required keeps the applicant pool larger.
What screening questions should I ask package handler applicants?
Ask whether they can work your start time on your days, whether they can lift your heaviest parcel weight repeatedly with or without reasonable accommodation, how they will get to the building at that hour, and when they can start. Skip the resume and diploma.
What does a package handler applicant cost on Facebook?
In Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark, the Warehouse / production family had a median of $9.83 per applicant, a blended $4.44 and a 20% apply rate. That is advertising cost only; cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
Why do new package handlers quit in the first weeks?
Usually because the hours, the finish time or the physical load differed from what the ad implied. Stating the start and finish, weekly hours and lift weight in the posting, and pairing new hires with an experienced handler, removes the most common reasons for early quits.
