Package Handler Job Description: Template, Duties, Requirements & Pay (2026)
A package handler loads, unloads, scans and sorts parcels in a hub, sort center or fulfillment building, usually on a short, fixed shift built around when the trucks leave. What a package handler does
Package handlers move parcels from one truck to another with a sort in between. On a typical shift that means unloading inbound trailers onto a belt, scanning and reading labels, sorting packages to the right chute, bag or outbound door, and loading delivery vehicles or trailers so the stops come off in order. Damaged boxes get flagged or re-taped, counts get recorded, and the building resets for the next sort.
The federal classification is laborers and freight, stock and material movers, hand (SOC 53-7062). O*NET's task list for that occupation reads like a hub shift: move freight to and from loading docks and delivery vehicles, sort cargo before loading and unloading, attach identifying tags, install bracing, padding or strapping to stop loads shifting, and record the number of units handled. Its reported job titles include loader, receiver, material handler and warehouse worker, which is exactly why the title in your posting deserves a deliberate choice.
The BLS says two things about this work that belong in a job description. Part-time work is common, and schedules "may include nights and weekends." And hand laborers and freight, stock, and material movers "have some of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations," with sprains and strains from lifting heavy objects among the risks. A posting that states the weight, the pace and the shift honestly is simply describing the job.

Requirements: what to keep, what to soften, and what to drop
Most package handler postings are copied from a warehouse template, and the copied lines are where the applicants go.

Package handler, material handler or picker-packer: which posting do you need?
The three titles overlap and candidates search all of them, so pick the one that matches the building. A package handler works with parcels that are already packed and labeled, and the job is speed and accuracy at the sort. A material handler moves product through a warehouse or plant — receiving, putting away, staging and loading pallets, usually with a pallet jack or forklift. A picker-packer builds the order in the first place: picks units from locations, packs them and prints the label that the package handler will later scan.

For the broader group of hand laborers and material movers, the BLS projects about 904,200 openings a year on average from 2025 to 2035, and retail trade is the largest employer of that group at 35%, ahead of transportation and warehousing at 22%. In practice that means a store backroom, a grocery distribution center and a parcel hub are all fishing in the same pool of candidates.
How to customize it for your setting
Parcel hub or sort center
Name the sort, the start time and the typical finish. Candidates want to know whether "4:00am to 8:30am" means they can get to a day job or a class. If the finish moves with volume, say so and give a usual range.
E-commerce fulfillment or 3PL
Here the package handler role usually sits at the end of the outbound line: scanning, sorting to carrier and loading trailers. Say whose building it is, whether the role is direct or through an agency, and whether there is a conversion path and when.
Retail store and ship-from-store
In a store, the role is truck unload plus back-room sorting and sometimes online-order staging. Say which hours are before opening and whether the role touches the sales floor, because the people who want an early, off-floor job are different from those who want customer contact.
