How to Recruit Hazmat Drivers: Where to Find Them and What to Say

To recruit hazmat drivers, reach CDL drivers who already hold the H or X endorsement, or who can wait out the TSA security threat assessment. Most are driving for another carrier, so they are scrolling Facebook and Instagram, not searching job boards. Name the product, lane, pay and who pays the TSA fee, keep the form to three questions and call back the same day. In Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, the CDL truck driver family ran a median $26.86 per applicant; hazmat drivers are not reported separately.

Where to find hazmat drivers, channel by channel

BLS does not count drivers by endorsement. Hazmat drivers sit inside heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers (SOC 53-3032), with about 214,500 openings a year projected for 2025-35. The drivers who already hold the H or X endorsement have passed a federal security threat assessment and are usually employed, so they are not searching job boards for you.

  • Drivers already hauling placarded loads for another carrier. Fuel, chemical, gas and explosives haulers. They move for home time, pay structure and equipment, and they find you in a Facebook or Instagram feed.
  • Tanker drivers with N who could add H. The combined endorsement is coded X; our guide to recruiting tanker drivers covers the tank side.
  • Experienced Class A and B drivers without H. The endorsement takes entry-level theory training, a knowledge test and the TSA assessment, so a clean driver can be trained into it if you can wait out the timeline below.
  • Drivers who already hold a TWIC. Port and terminal drivers have passed a comparable TSA assessment, which can speed the H endorsement in states that accept it.
  • Your own hazmat drivers' referrals. Pay the bonus once the new driver has stayed 90 days.

Is there a hazmat shortage? Our truck driver shortage page answers that with federal data. The wider channel picture is in our CDL recruiting guide.

What hazmat drivers earn (BLS OEWS May 2025) and what they compare you on

BLS publishes no pay figure for hazmat drivers. The table shows the occupation they belong to and the jobs competing for the same licensed drivers.

A driver with a hazmat endorsement compares your job on the product and its risk, the pay structure and whether hazmat pay is added, home time, and the equipment. They also check who pays for the endorsement renewal, because it comes with a TSA fee and new fingerprints.

The job ad that works (sample Facebook ad)

Name the product class (fuel, chemicals, gases, explosives), whether it is bulk or packaged, the lane, the pay structure with the range, and what you pay for. Where a pay-transparency law applies, the range in the ad must be the range you pay; see pay transparency laws by state. Our CDL driver job description has a template for the full posting.

Sample Facebook ad. "Hazmat driver, regional: home every weekend. Class A with H or X. We pay your TSA fee and endorsement renewal, and hazmat loads pay a premium on top of your rate. Apply in one minute." Another headline to test: "Have your H endorsement? Local chemical deliveries, home nightly." Put your actual rate in the second line of the ad.

Employment ads on Meta run in the Special Ad Category, which removes demographic and ZIP-code options and uses a 15-mile minimum location radius; see Meta Special Ad Category, explained.

Screening: knockout questions for a one-minute apply

  • What CDL class do you hold? (Knockout if the truck needs Class A.)
  • Do you hold the hazmat (H) or tank and hazmat (X) endorsement today? (Knockout only if you cannot wait for the TSA assessment; otherwise informational.)
  • How many years of verifiable CDL experience do you have, and how much of it hauling placarded loads? (Knockout at your insurer's minimum.)
  • Name and mobile number.

Everything else waits for the call. Don't make a photo of the medical card part of the form either: since 23 June 2025, a CDL or CLP holder with a current medical examiner's certificate no longer has to carry it (49 CFR 391.41(a)(2)(i)(B)), so many drivers won't have it on them. For context, the CDL truck driver family in Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark had an 8% apply rate, and every extra field works against it. See pre-screening questions.

Role-specific: the H endorsement, the TSA threat assessment timeline, and TWIC where needed

A driver needs a state-issued endorsement to operate a commercial motor vehicle used to transport hazardous materials (49 CFR 383.93(b)(4)); the test is a knowledge test, and its content is set out in 383.121. A state may not issue, renew, upgrade or transfer the endorsement unless TSA has determined the driver does not pose a security risk, or the driver holds a valid TWIC (383.141(b)). States must require renewal every five years or less so the assessment repeats (383.141(d)). A driver taking the H knowledge test for the first time must first complete entry-level driver training from a provider on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (380.609(b)).

TSA timeline and fee

TSA's hazmat endorsement page, read on 30 September 2026, gives the fee as $86.50 for a new applicant, or $41.00 for a driver who already holds a valid TWIC and is licensed in a state that accepts the TWIC assessment. It says TSA's goal is to provide the status of an application within 60 days of enrollment, that processing for some applicants may exceed 45 days, and it recommends enrolling a minimum of 60 days before the determination is needed. So if you hire a driver who still needs H, plan on local or non-placarded work for about two months.

TWIC, where the route needs it

A TWIC is required for unescorted access to secure areas of vessels and maritime facilities regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act rules (33 CFR 101.514). If your drivers load at port terminals or marine facilities, say TWIC in the ad. TSA's TWIC page lists a $125.25 fee for a new applicant and a card valid for five years.

Training after the hire

A hazmat driver is a hazmat employee under the Hazardous Materials Regulations. A new hazmat employee must complete the required training, including security awareness training, within 90 days after employment, and until then may do hazmat work only under the direct supervision of a trained employee; training must recur at least once every three years (49 CFR 172.704). Put that training on the calendar before the first placarded load.

Speed and the first 90 days

Drivers with a hazmat endorsement are the ones every chemical and fuel carrier wants, and they apply to several fleets at once. Text within minutes and call the same day. Our recruiting text message templates include first-touch messages.

Federal rules set the order, and none of it has to come before the phone call. Before a new driver performs any safety-sensitive function, you must run a pre-employment Clearinghouse query (49 CFR 382.701) and have a verified negative pre-employment drug test result (382.301). Within 30 days of the start of employment, you must request the driver's motor vehicle record from every state that licensed them in the past three years and investigate their safety performance history with DOT-regulated employers (391.23). Our driver qualification file checklist lists every item.

What it costs to recruit hazmat drivers (nearest benchmark role family)

In Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, the CDL truck driver family had a median of $26.86 per applicant, with a middle half of $17.00 to $42.31 and an 8% apply rate. Boostpoint does not report hazmat drivers separately; the CDL truck driver family is the nearest family. Across all roles in Boostpoint's benchmark, campaigns with a 20-35% apply rate paid $4.41 per applicant against $53.77 for campaigns under 5%, which is why the short form matters. Full data is on the benchmarks page. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire: divide by your own applicant-to-hire rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recruit hazmat drivers?

Advertise on Facebook and Instagram, where employed drivers scroll. Name the product class, lane, pay structure and hazmat premium, say you pay the TSA fee, keep the application to three questions (CDL class, endorsement, experience) and call back the same day.

Where do I find hazmat drivers to hire?

Drivers already hauling placarded loads for another carrier, tanker drivers with N who could add H, experienced Class A and B drivers without H, port and terminal drivers who already hold a TWIC, and referrals from your current hazmat drivers.

What should a hazmat drivers job ad say?

The product class, bulk or packaged, the lane and home time, the pay structure and range with any hazmat premium, the endorsement you need (H, or X for tank loads), whether TWIC is needed, and whether you pay the TSA fee and the renewal.

How much do hazmat drivers make?

BLS does not report hazmat drivers separately. They are part of heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, which had a May 2025 median annual wage of $58,640. State your own range and any hazmat premium in the ad.

How long does it take to hire hazmat drivers?

A driver who already holds H can start once the Clearinghouse query and pre-employment drug test are done. A driver who still needs H waits on the TSA security threat assessment: TSA's goal is a status within 60 days of enrollment, and it says some applicants may wait more than 45 days.
