How to Recruit Tanker Drivers: Where to Find Them and What to Say

To recruit tanker drivers, reach CDL drivers who hold or can add the tank (N) endorsement, and X for fuel and chemical loads. Most are already driving for another fleet, so they are scrolling Facebook and Instagram, not searching job boards. Name the product, home time, pay structure and tank type in the ad, keep the form to three questions and call back the same day. In Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, the CDL truck driver family ran a median $26.86 per applicant; tanker drivers are not reported separately.

Where to find tanker drivers, channel by channel

BLS does not count tanker drivers separately. They sit inside heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers (SOC 53-3032), with about 214,500 openings a year projected for 2025-35. Most of the drivers who hold the tank endorsement already have a job, so they are not searching job boards for you.

  • Drivers already hauling tank loads for another carrier. Fuel, milk, food-grade, chemical and water haulers. They move for home time, pay structure and better equipment, and they find you in a Facebook or Instagram feed.
  • Experienced dry van and flatbed drivers who want local work. The tank endorsement is a knowledge test only (49 CFR 383.93(c)(3)), so a clean, experienced driver can be trained into tank work. Say you pay for the test and train on surge.
  • Class B drivers on straight tank trucks. Fuel, propane and septic trucks are often single vehicles. Our guide to recruiting CDL-B drivers covers that pool.
  • Veterans from military motor transport. See hiring veterans.
  • Your own tanker drivers' referrals. Pay the bonus once the new driver has stayed 90 days.

The wider channel picture, including job boards and agencies, is in our CDL recruiting guide.

What tanker drivers earn (BLS OEWS May 2025) and what they compare you on

BLS publishes no tanker pay figure. The table shows the occupation tanker drivers belong to and the jobs competing for the same licensed drivers.

An experienced tanker driver compares your job with their current one on four points:

  • The product. Fuel, food-grade, chemical or water tells them the risk, the washouts and whether hazmat applies.
  • Pay structure. Hourly, per load, per mile or percentage, with the range, and whether pump-off and wait time are paid.
  • Home time. Local, regional or over the road, stated as a schedule a dispatcher would sign.
  • Equipment and the work at the stop. Tank type (baffled or non-baffled), whether the driver hooks hoses, climbs, or loads at a rack.

The job ad that works (sample Facebook ad)

Lead with the product, the home time and the pay structure. Where a pay-transparency law applies, the range in the ad must be the range you pay; see pay transparency laws by state. Our CDL driver job description has a template for the full posting.

Sample Facebook ad. "Local fuel tanker driver: home every night. Monday to Friday, day shift, hourly pay with overtime. Class A with tank and hazmat (X). No X yet? We pay for the tests and train you on our trucks before you haul alone. Apply in one minute." Another headline to test: "Food-grade tanker, regional: home every weekend." Put your actual rate in the second line of the ad.

On Meta, employment ads run in the Special Ad Category, which removes demographic and ZIP-code options and uses a 15-mile minimum location radius; see Meta Special Ad Category, explained.

Screening: knockout questions for a one-minute apply

  • What CDL class do you hold? (Knockout if the truck needs Class A.)
  • Do you have the tank (N) or combined tank and hazmat (X) endorsement? (Knockout only if you will not pay for the test and train; otherwise informational.)
  • How many years of verifiable CDL experience do you have, and how much of it in tankers? (Knockout at your insurer's minimum, not above it.)
  • Name and mobile number.

Everything else waits for the call, including the DOT employment application. Don't make a photo of the medical card part of the form either: since 23 June 2025, a CDL or CLP holder with a current medical examiner's certificate no longer has to carry it (49 CFR 391.41(a)(2)(i)(B)), so many drivers won't have it on them. For context, in Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, the CDL truck driver family had a median of $26.86 per applicant, with a middle half of $17.00 to $42.31 and an 8% apply rate. Every extra field works against that apply rate. See pre-screening questions.

Role-specific: the N endorsement, X for hazmat tankers, and liquid surge

A driver needs a state-issued endorsement to operate a tank vehicle (49 CFR 383.93(b)(3)). A tank vehicle is a commercial motor vehicle designed to carry liquid or gaseous materials in a tank or tanks with an individual rated capacity of more than 119 gallons and an aggregate rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more, permanently or temporarily attached (383.5). The tank endorsement is coded N, hazmat is H, and the two together are coded X (383.153).

The N knowledge test is the checklist for your interview. Under 49 CFR 383.119, applicants must know the causes, prevention and effects of cargo surge; braking when the tank is empty, full and partially full; handling of baffled or compartmented tanks versus non-baffled ones; surge with liquids of different densities; and the effect of road grade and curves with filled, half-filled and empty tanks. A passed test is not road experience, so ask what the driver has hauled and in which tank.

For fuel and chemical loads that must be placarded, the H half of X adds a TSA security threat assessment before the state can issue it, unless the driver already holds a valid TWIC (383.141). Our guide to recruiting hazmat drivers covers that timeline. A learner's permit can carry N, but a CLP holder with N may only operate an empty tank vehicle, and not one that previously held hazardous materials unless it has been purged of any residue (383.153). Entry-level driver training at 49 CFR 380 subpart F applies to a first Class A or B license or an upgrade to one, and a first H, P or S endorsement (380.609); the tank endorsement is not on that list. See entry-level driver training.

Speed and the first 90 days

Tanker drivers apply to several fleets at once, and the first recruiter who calls gets the conversation. Text within minutes and call the same day. Our recruiting text message templates include first-touch messages.

Federal rules set the order, and none of it has to come before the phone call. Before a new driver performs any safety-sensitive function, you must run a pre-employment Clearinghouse query (49 CFR 382.701) and have a verified negative pre-employment drug test result (382.301). Within 30 days of the start of employment, you must request the driver's motor vehicle record from every state that licensed them in the past three years and investigate their safety performance history with DOT-regulated employers (391.23). Our driver qualification file checklist lists every item.

What it costs to recruit tanker drivers (nearest benchmark role family)

In Boostpoint's 2026 Social Job Advertising Benchmark, the CDL truck driver family had a median of $26.86 per applicant, with a middle half of $17.00 to $42.31 and an 8% apply rate. Boostpoint does not report tanker drivers separately; the CDL truck driver family is the nearest family, and the figure may not match a tanker-only campaign. Across all roles in Boostpoint's benchmark, campaigns with a 20-35% apply rate paid $4.41 per applicant against $53.77 for campaigns under 5%, which is why the short form matters. Full data is on the benchmarks page. Cost per applicant is not cost per hire: divide by your own applicant-to-hire rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recruit tanker drivers?

Advertise where employed drivers scroll: Facebook and Instagram. Name the product, home time, pay structure and tank type in the first lines, keep the application to three questions (CDL class, endorsements, experience), and call back the same day. Offer to pay for the N or X test if you train.

Where do I find tanker drivers to hire?

Drivers already hauling tank loads for another carrier, experienced dry van and flatbed drivers who want local work and can add the tank endorsement, Class B drivers on straight tank trucks, veterans from motor transport, and referrals from your current tanker drivers.

What should a tanker drivers job ad say?

The product hauled, whether the job is local, regional or over the road, the pay structure and range, the tank type and the work at the stop, and the endorsement you need (N, or X for hazmat tankers). Say whether you pay for the test and train new tanker drivers.

How much do tanker drivers make?

BLS does not report tanker drivers separately. They are part of heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, which had a May 2025 median annual wage of $58,640. Pay for tanker work varies by product, pay structure and home time, so state your own range in the ad.

How long does it take to hire tanker drivers?

The advertising and the call can happen within days; the federal gate is the checks. Before the first safety-sensitive work you need a Clearinghouse query and a negative pre-employment drug test. A driver who must add the H half of X also waits on a TSA threat assessment, with a stated TSA goal of 60 days.

How much does it cost to recruit tanker drivers?

The CDL truck driver family in Boostpoint's 2026 benchmark had a median of $26.86 per applicant, with a middle half of $17.00 to $42.31. Tanker drivers are not reported separately, and cost per applicant is not cost per hire.
